Title: Gearbox or Clutch Problems
Post by: guymartin on 09 July 2017, 08:47:50 pm
Hi, my 1999 FZS 600 has been running like a dream however, last week she has stated to play up.  Really have to push down hard to select first gear and second is tricky too.  I have oiled the clutch cable and greased and adjusted the clutch rod pusher but not really any difference.  What is interesting however is when the bike is on the centre stand - and you engage 1st gear with the clutch pulled in, the rear wheel starts spinning (can't stop it with your hand) - like the clutch is dragging.  If anything, the clutch probably needs replacing which I have know about however, I thought this would have caused slipping - not dragging!

Can anyone help?  I'm really hoping it's not a gear box re-build  :eek

Hi,it is normal for the wheel to spin with the clutch pulled in but you should be able to stop it,use your foot instead of your hand.

Make sure you lube the gear change lever pivots, adjust free play at the clutch lever (cable stretched) clean & lube the clutch mechanism in the housing, also how old is your oil.

Put the bike on the sidestand, pull off the right engine / clutch cover  and inspect the gear change mechanism on that side. You'll see how the pedal rotates the selector drum and I seem to remember people saying about issues with the arms on the end bending or spring problems.

sounds like the clutch is dragging too much. adjust the clutch and make sure the chain is properly adjusted too.

Agree with BBROWN, it sounds like your clutch is dragging.

I'd personally start with a new clutch cable, and once adjusted properly at both ends it may all be happy again.
Do you know how old the cable is?
Is it adjusted correctly at the lower end, then the top end?
