Title: WTF
Post by: tommyardin on 28 May 2017, 12:05:46 am
Typical  :'(

I have not been to the USA for about 28 years now, my Wife and Daughter have never been, so we booked up about 6 weeks ago to fly out with BA on Monday 29th to visit my Son who is in St Louis Missouri, our fist stop was to be O'hare Chigcaro and then internal flight to St Louis, then after a couple of days fly on to Cali and visit Carmel by the sea where Clint Eastwood was Mayor (Love Clint, no I said Clint).

Tonight I heard on the news (Been up in Knightsbridge all day so heard nothing until tonight) that BA computers have had a massive melt down and no BA flights have left either Heathrow or Gatwick today and the computer system is still F----d so it don't look good for Monday :'(   There is going to be One Mother of a backlog.
Hopefully they will sort it tomoz and we will be able to go at some point early in the week.
We booked with BA (Not the cheapest) because we thought that they would be the most comfortable and most reliable.

I'd disagree mate, I've pretty much always flown BA for this reason, but earlier this month we flow to Venice, it was horrible my knees were touching the seat in front, they don't take cash on broad anymore, the selection of food/snacks(all M&S) S)was very limited, by the time they reached our row (14) all the nice stuff had gone!

They're are like most others putting nothing but profit in front of everything, but unlike others they cost quite a bit more which leave people like me feeling ripped off.  BA you need to doing it better as for me at present your price isn't worth the extra!

This thread is the equivalent to BA landing a 747 in a field.

Tommy, how exactly do you choose where to post stuff?
It doesn't really bother me - it's kind of endearing even - but I am curious.

BA charge a premium for a premium service but only deliver a low cost service these days.
If you are booked on Mondays flight, you will be top of the list to get on that flight as it reduces their compensation payouts.

Enjoy your trip

the BA datacentres are at Heathrow. One (or both) appear to have had a power failure and the generators didn't kick in.

Someone is going to get a kicking for that.

Woo woo! Arrived in Chicago O'Hare about 11-40am Monday 29th USA time, flight left LHR on time and crossing was good, flew on to St Louis after about a 90 minute stop over.

These bloody idiots drive on the wrong side of the road.

I have already passed a scene along an Interstate just outside city centre with four or five police cars closed off a lane with a woman face down in the road with 4 police guns pointed at her, we heard about 2 hours later on local radio she killed someone in a resturant  called Carvers some sort of family feud, foc that if they do it their own family.
Seen lots of bikes Harley's and Susuki, big Kwackers but no Yammys as yet. Looks funny guys with full face buckets on then shorts, tee shirts and deck type shoes with no socks and not a glove in sight, very painful if you have a down.
Anyway it's 5-30am here, but to me in my head it feels around lunch time.

I saw a guy going up the strip in Las Vegas in full leathers. He must have been sweating buckets in there as it was about 100 in the shade. I don't really see the point of a motorbike in US cities as you're not allowed to filter, you might as well drive a car and have the comfort of air con.

Not really. I've been going backwards and forwards to SE Asia several times a year over the last 10 years and flown them three times in the last two years, they are ok but certainly not outstanding. I only use them if they are significantly cheaper than others.
Everyone I've spoken to about airlines here (I'm in Indonesia at mo) is surprised by the new improved Garuda cabins. I flew them last month and the new seats are great, good for 6 hours and not bad for 10 hours and the legroom is better than most now, the loos get cleaned more regularly on long haul too and the drinks trolley appears very often (still free).
The others are no more than middling I'd say, Singapore, Malaysia, Thai (soon to be getting Dreamliners) etc. Vietnam Airlines have the most modern fleet, almost all their 777s are nearly sold off with Dreamliner and Airbus replacements appearing on all routes.
My top pics if you are going from Europe to SE Asia? Vietnam, Garuda, British Airways, Thai, Emirates, Malaysian and Singapore.
Bad uns, Bangladesh, Turkish, Air France, KLM.

Yeah, that no filtering. What's that all about. The first time I rode in the US was in the early '90's in Colorado. On leaving the rental bike premises I filtered up to the first set of lights, and had it explained to me in no uncertain terms that people had been shot for lot less misdemeanors than filtering. :eek .
Title: Re: WTF
Post by: Robbie8666 on 31 May 2017, 12:17:25 pm
yeah it's now legal to buy Cannabis in some states but not legal to filter!
or compulsory to wear a helmet in 3 states!
Currently, 19 states and the District of Columbia have laws requiring all motorcyclists to wear a helmet, known as universal helmet laws. Laws requiring only some motorcyclists to wear a helmet are in place in 28 states. There is no motorcycle helmet use law in three states (Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire).

Very good point. Foc I get confused crossing the road by foot. Which foccing way are they coming. You can turn right on a red light, overtake on either side and just do a U turn where you want or a three point turn.

Went and saw the St Louis Cardinals playing the LA Dodgers at the Bushe Stadium last night about 40,000 spectators at the game, lots of  noise, very animated, lots of beer being guzzled, but the atmosphere was very good opposing teams quite friendly to each other, they could teach UK football spectators a thing or two.
People are generally friendly and they love the English accent, I still have a bit of my cockney lilt left and they love that, reminds them of chitty chitty bang bang, gawd blimmey Mary Popins. :lol

Down in North Beach San Francisco now, a bit cooler than St Louis with a fresh breeze blowing in of the bay, sat at an outside bar drinking buds and eating pulled pork sandwich and fries, about 1/3rd of a mile across the bay is the prison Island Alcatraz. Going to do the steep city hills on a tram tomorrow, the ones that are famous in American movie car chases. Our flight from St Louis to California took about 3 to 4 hours. Hiring a car tomorrow night and heading to Carmel by the Sea the day after tomorrow. Can't post any pics cos I'm not smart enough to get them from my phone to my iPad. Carmel where my hero Clint Eastwood was Mayor

Fantastic Tommy, Your bringing back happy memories for me when drove the pacific highway in 2003. San Fran was the best thing about the trip- Carmel was a little dissappointing to be honest, Monterey was better.
THe drive along the big sur coastline was amazing. You'll remember it from your man Clint's classic film Play Misty For Me.  :)

Cheers guys, the trip is amazing, did the San Fran cable cars today went up into China town. Some of the hill streets in San Fran are unbelievable in places the are about a 40 degree slope, Heavy on car brakes I would imagine. Carmel tomorrow looking forward to the drive down the coast. First thing this morning got a cab to The Golden Gate Bridge and walked about halfway across and decided not to complete the whole bridge as it about one hour ten minutes to do the return journey. Lots of surfers surfing by the bridge, daughter was in her element watching them she's a surfer but said she would not be happy surfing up onto massive great rocks like theses guys were doing. Still not seen any Yammys, Ducati, Suzuki, Kwackers loads of Harley's, the joke is if you want to increase the top speed of your Harley put a smaller plough on the back.
People seem very friendly even opposing teams at some of the games (baseball) we have been to, real rivalry and enthusiasm, but no anger or hatred like there is here at some of our football matches. We could learn a thing or two from these guys. People generally want to be helpful and are polite. One guy while we were waiting for the cable car today was busking, playing guitar and singing and he came out with the line ' if you like what you hear pop a dollar in the can, if you don't like what you hear you can take one out just don't let me get eye contact with you. He played well and sang well he also had muscles in places that I don't even have places, so I dropped a buck in his can. :lol

Well we left San Fransisco and drove down to Carmel about 250 miles, Carmel very much a money belt with beautiful homes overlooking the bay the houses are built on the steeply terraced hills so most of the homes have a great view of the beach.

The beach is fine silver sand that makes a cheeking noise when you kick your foot into it (Apparently it's the softness, fineness and composition of the sand that causes that. First afternoon on the beach there were a few people about (Sunday) but nothing like English beaches, in every 50 meters of beach perhaps 15 people, Monday woke up to the bay full of mist so drove around the headland to Monterey, again a great place but more tourist targeted (An American Padstow in Cornwall) By 10-30 am mist had cleared to a beautiful sunny day, so we headed back to Carmel and spent the rest of the day on the beach, silver sand as far as the eye could see and hardly anyone on the beach, it seemed most people were up in town spending sheds full of money.
We went to Mission Ranch Bar in the evening for a beer or two, the Mission Ranch area is owned by Clint Eastwood and apparently he comes into the bar some nights to tickle the ivories for the patrons, but sadly not that night, probably best as I might have kissed him, best for both him and me :eek
Left Carmel and drove North about 300 miles (Approx) to Yosemite Park had a great day in the park 9,000 foot mountains and water falls dropping from top to bottom, it was about 32 deg C in the mountains, raging snow melt rivers that would smash a car in minutes should you go in.
Then disaster hit Miriam my daughter jumped from one fallen tree to another slipped ankle over popped the joint cut her other leg, my son Jack ran about a mile through the forest for help and the Park Rangers had too call 911, the Park Ranger Abulance service came out. Four Rangers had to carry her out of the forest to the road after they had administered with 25 mg of morphen. Miriam passed out at one point because of the pain, she went an ashen yellow colour was sweating, yet was really cold and clammy, Ranger said it was shock and passing out is a pain coping method. They ambulanced her about 3 miles to the Park hospital and X-Rayed her ankle, nothing broken but buy this time it was twice the size of the other bruising and fluid.
We left the hospital about 90 minutes later with Miriam on crutches and out of her head on morphen and I was about 4,500 Bucks poorer. 😥 I have travel insurance so can claim most back.
Anyway we drove about 70 mile through/ around the park and headed off to a town called Maraposa about 40 miles North of Yosemite to another Air BnB we had booked.
This could only happen to Miriam, we had her in hospital a few years ago after an air ambulance ride because she was thrown from a horse while out riding, suspected spine injury, 6 or 7 weeks laid up and she was fine.
Anyway we are driving back to San Fran tomorrow, then on a plane and back to St Louis for a couple of days before flying the Chicago and then onto to Heathrow.

America is an amazing place, but much to fast a life style for this old boy, I will stick with sleepy old Hampshire.
Mind you might have to sell the house to pay for that trip, It was great to spend some time with my son Jack, he is based in St Louis for another year then we will see what happens with him.
Second time Stateside for me, first time for my wife and daughter.

It is 3 years now since I did long flights since I have now retired , Qatar Air were also a decent outfit , well now that the Qataris are funding ISIS bollocks to that.
Small world though I live in France and last week we went to a Quiz night in another village. It was a charity evening.  The woman that was asking the questions was a right stuck up bitch, she was basically talking down to folk. At break time I was at the bar and a bloke says to me!!! is it me or is she a stuck up cow??? I laughed and said yes she was. She definitely had the look of a  retired BA cabin crew. She came round collecting the answer sheets and I says to her!!! I know your face? she just glared at me and as she walked away I said to my mate, I bet she is ex BA cabin crew!! she spun round and looked at me and said, good guess how did you know ? It was that painted on smile you have on your mush love, the place erupted.

Yeah agree some of them look like they have just sucked a lemon before they speak to you, but also in their defence some of the passengers talk to and treat them badly.
To be honest they are waitressses and garbage collectors, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way, they really are no different than the ladies who work in fast food outlets, they welcome you sometimes show you to your seat, ask what you would like to eat and drink, clear the leftover stuff away and say have a nice day as you leave.
The only difference is you can't get cross about the crap food and leave, well only the once :eek
It's 8-25 am here back in St Louis sun is shining and its 24 degrees, expecting to rise to 31 today.

Big free open air concert today called 'Shakespeare in the Park' not really my thing I'm to much of a peasant to appreciate culture, I'm more your 'Blazing Saddles' type of person, but my wife a daughter would like to go to it so I may just have to bite the bullet, take my iPod and phones lay on the grass with a Bud or two and enjoy the sun.

Sounds like you had a very memorable time, fair play, nice one  :thumbup

You can Bluetooth photo's over to the iPad, which can be a bit of a kerfuffle turning things on and off, but easier than that is emailing them to your iPad address.
Once the iPad receives the email, hold your finger on the photo and it will give you the option to 'save the image' into your iPad photo library.
You should be good to go from there.  ;)

Hey Tommy have a look at a program called dropbox. It's cloud storage that can be accessed from your PC but you can also download the app on both Apple and Android. Then whenever you add a file (be it photo, video song etc) to your Dropbox folder you will be able to access it from any of your devices without complication. It's very much a drag and drop operation 👍
Oh and it's also free.
And if you get really good with it you can create a folder then can be shared with anyone else you know with a Dropbox account. So for instance if your Son has it, you can have a shared folder where anything either of you add will be avaliable to you both.
Hope I'm still making sense haha

Sounds to me like Darrsi and Dudeoreude know what they are talking about when it come to technology, but, alas to the old geezer its all Mumbo Jumbo.

I thought the USB port was a place in America that ships docked. lol!

I'm an abacus, chalk and blackboard sort of guy, contact breakers and condensers I also understand, distributors and dizzy caps are also good, electronics and I are not bed fellows, If I cant see it moving or spinning it aint working.

I reckon there are no moving or spinning parts on Dropbox, and Bluetooth has to be some sort of dental disorder.

Thanks for the advice guys, but, What the fuck are you talking about? Speak English :rollin :rollin

Haha if I had to simplify it...... Dropbox basically makes a folder on your computer. Then anything you add to that folder can be accessed from any other device with Dropbox installed ie ipad, Samsung s6 etc etc
If you have someone who could set it all up for you then you'd be laughing haha
