Title: FZS600 '02 headlights upgrade
Post by: feral kid on 01 April 2017, 01:00:21 am

Is it me or the original headlights in FZS600 '02 are extremely poor on dark roads? Can anyone advice how to upgrade it? Are there a brighter bulbs available for this model that won't melt the plastic cover; maybe some LEDs? I asked my mechanic about those and he said that it would cost around £80, which is way above my budget. Is there anything cheaper or is there any other solution? I heard that there is a MOD for Fazer Boxeye model that improves its headlights; maybe there is something similar for Foxeye model. Or maybe there is a decent set of spotlights available?

Hiya fella,

All your answers are on this site. If you search "projector" you will find help on sourcing and fitting. Search "Osram" or "Night breaker" and you'll get recommended bulb upgrades.

A recent thread was spotlights (link below). Happy reading and let us know how you get on  :thumbup [/size]

Thanks for the link, Frosties. They seem to do the job right. I would probably have to ask my mechanic to install them form me as I don't have basic electrician skills. Are they road legal, for example; if police stops me will they be a problem? Also, is my bike going to pass the MOT with them?

Road legal being white not bluey in colour. Will pass MOT due to being wired through switch. Takes an hour tops to fit  :thumbup

What about changing original bulbs to something stronger like this:

?
Or maybe some LED bulbs?

There are two problems with 100W headlights a, they're not legal (like anyone cares) and b, the output of the alternator will only just about cope with them and then when you add in the sidelight, tail light and anything else you've got running there's bugger all left to charge the battery.

What about LED, that need much less power and would be similar bright like 100W? How much would they cost and would they be legal? If not what are the chances to get the ticket for using them at night? Or to pass MOT?

I don't know. I've been tempted but the consensus on here is that the beam pattern will be wrong.

Will probably melt or taint the plastic lens on the fairing as well.

02 bikes have good lights compared to the boxeye.

Try new bulbs. Old ones fade.

+1. Have a look at the Osram Nightbreaker of Philips Extreme

If I fit one of these bulbs in my Boxeye is there any danger of causing damage to the headlight lens?

Thanks

Notby fitting the Osram or Nightbreaker - however, being as you have a boxeye you'd do well to remove the reflector piece of crap in the low beam side (brass shield). You'll get an improvement but extra spots are the way forward

Thanks Frosties. These are exactly what I need.

Regarding the spotlights. You mentioned that you have also used these brighter ones:

1. If I upgrade the headlights, do you still recommend to instal spotlights?
2. If I go for these brighter ones (2x 30W) is the alternator going to handle them or will they be draining the battery?
3. Do they come with an on\off switch?
4. Do I also need to get a fuse tap to link into a switched circuit on the '02 model
5. Will it pass MOT with them?
6. Do you know if they are road legal?
7. Can I get stopped for using them and what would be a penalty for it; like £30 or more like penalty points or doing MOT again?
8. How much of a difference is between those 30W and these 10W?

1. If I upgrade the headlights, do you still recommend to instal spotlights? Yup
2. If I go for these brighter ones (2x 30W) is the alternator going to handle them or will they be draining the battery? Alternator ok
3. Do they come with an on\off switch? Need to but a seperate switch as in first link to "spotlights"
4. Do I also need to get a fuse tap to link into a switched circuit on the '02 model Fuse taps are very useful, work great if you have no other means of picking up a feed.
5. Will it pass MOT with them? Not sure. the 30w jobbies have a bluey tint.
6. Do you know if they are road legal? Not sure. the 30w jobbies have a bluey tint.

Hope this helps fella  :thumbup

Thanks.
Why the 10W are far better than 30W ones?
And also,
maybe it's a silly question, but can a I get a ticket just for having them installed (without using them) if I'm stopped by a police?
