The time has come to do a final adjustment before i bite the bullet and replace the plates/springs etc... my question is how easily assessable are the nuts on the engine end if the adjustent that surrond the phillips adjuster? Just a normal appropriately sized sprocket set? Or do i need a special thin walled sprocket to fit? And i take it clockwise is slacker and anticlockwise is tighter on the adjuster bolt ? (My cable is too stiff and tight atm and i think i can smell hot clutch )

manual just shows an offset ring spanner and you slacken the screw to give more free play or tighten it to take up the slack , it telly you to slacken the nut then turn the screw out then turn the screw in clockwise till resistance is felt ie till you feel it touch something the back it out 1/4 turn and lock up the nut again

Is it an old cable? Have you tried lubing it? If it's stiff it's probably jammed up with dirt or a few strands have frayed and are getting stuck. I'd try lubing it and work it back and forth and see if it frees up. If it doesn't then I'd replace the cable. The only reason you'd replace the clutch plates is if the cable is in good condition and adjusted properly but clutch is slipping

Yep, that's pretty much it, although you ideally need a deep offset ring spanner.
I bought one specifically just for that job.
Make sure you screw in at the lever end so you can adjust at the bottom, then tweak at the top afterwards.
If you get a new cable, don't buy any old shit, get a proper Yamaha one.

Check that the actuator that's inside the sprocket cover is working too. They can get stuck.

I used a long socket. Undid the nut, put screw driver through the hole in the socket, adjusted the centre screw, then hold screw driver and turn the socket by hand until the nut bites, remove screw driver then torque up the nut with the socket.

If you get a new cable, don't buy any old shit, get a proper Yamaha one.
I got one from Wemoto for my old ZZR once. Perfectly ok except the outer was about half an inch too long. Caused no end of grief trying to fit it I can tell you.
