Title: Oh foccer font of multimeter knowledge
Post by: HarryHornby on 22 August 2016, 05:44:07 pm
Hi Guys,

My rear wiper has packed up on the car.  I have a multimeter (it came with a tool kit) but I've never used it.

How do I test to see if it's the motor for the wiper that's broken?

I've checked the fuse and it's good.

Cheers in advance

Flick the switch, if that don't work make sure the ignition is on then check the fuses are ok and then the power supply to and from the switch is good plus the earth to the motor is ok.
If all these are positive my guess would be the motor is F----D

Or set the multimetre to 20 volt DC, attach the multimeter (Red wire) to the power supply on the wiper motor, with ignition and wiper switch on and touch the other wire to the chassis of the motor or down to earth on car, if needle or display swings around to show a voltage above 12 volts the the supply is good and the motor is likely to be duff

but what settings do I use on the multimeter???  Never used one before and really should have learnt a long time ago!  LOL  I're got 2 holes for the red cable, which do I use? the amps one or the ohms one?  black is nice and easy there is only one hole :-)  Honestly, total multimeter virgin here..... be gentle ha ha

if you connect the red and the black the wrong way around it will give you a negitive/minus voltage reading, just read it as a positive reading.

Here the best way this is how my multi is set up

Use the meter the way Tommy suggested (after the old fart understood your question and posted again  :pokefun ).
If your meter is different in any way to Tommy's £2 Lidl special, then post up a pic of the meter and we can tell you exactly where the leads go etc..
