Title: Brake Pad Retaining Pin?
Post by: Tefer on 11 March 2012, 12:21:01 pm
Hi,

One of my pad retaining pins is seized solid in the caliper, gonna have to Cut/Drill it free. Does anyone have the dimensions, there are some stainless ones on ebay but all different sizes.

There is one original on Ebay.

Dont touch it!

Remove the old pin FIRST get hold of a flat punch that is long enough to drift the old pin out, DONT drill it or you will more than likely wreck the capliper. Chances are it's just oxidation between the pin and the caliper once removed the pin can be cleaned up with fine grade emery and the holes cleaned out with a drill bit.

When cleaning out the holes ONLY use your fingers to twist/pull the drill bit DONT force it and keep it parallel.  If the pin is too damage then replace it with an OE they are not that expensive.

Tried hitting it with a punch, don't want to do it to hard while on the leg. Do you think it would be better to remove caliper from bike?

Try unbolting it from the leg and resting it on something failing that removal is really the only way, the fact that its this bad it would be wise to remove both and service them.

Left one came out as normal, and is cleaned and working great, just the right one is stuck solid and i don't want to damage fork leg.
