Title: removing fork caps... when not on bike?
Post by: Bretty on 17 July 2016, 11:45:45 am
I'm trying to service a set of forks and need to remove the top caps.

I know the easiest way to do this is when they are clamped to the bike, but these are not and I really don't want to have to take the forks off my bike just to clamp these on. Unfortunately this seems like the inevitable solution.

Is there another way of gripping the stanchions? When they are not on the bike?

Only sensible thing I can think of is in a vice, if one is not available then back in the yokes

Don't put it in a vice, even with soft jaws fitted you will probably crush the tube out of round when tryjng to hold the tube firmly enough so you can undo the top caps.

You could just whip your top yoke off, put your new fork in that and hold the yoke in a vice.

Intentionally left blank

If no vice fit both legs and loosen the left side leg then turn over and repeat
