As title says, I'm swapping out the front sprocket (again), no torque wrench, is this sensible/OK to do? I have a long arm for my standard wrench.

Is a bit chancy, you'll either go under which could cause the nut eventually come loose, or go over and mess up the thread.
If the thread was good i would've said it'd be okay but because of the known sprocket nut issues if i were you i'd try and borrow a torque wrench from someone.
With the new 12mm nut it's meant to be 90Nm, although i did mine to 80Nm, as a few others have as well.

Why not ask if a local foccer can lend you one? Where in the world is you?

They're not as convenient to use as a click-style wrench (you have to get your head level with the arrow when tightening, and make sure the needle is pointing to zero every time you measure something) but mine is as accurate as my Teng (and the Sealey I had before it). Just don't confuse ft-lb for NM!

You don't need a torque wrench. Just ultimate it until you fart and bend the tab washer over. It won't come loose.

Think you're totally missing the point here, there are very well known thread issues with the front sprocket nut / shaft.
You go too heavy on that with an extended wrench and there's a small chance you could create a world of pain for yourself.
I just don't see the point in taking that gamble.

If you dont want to buy a torque wrench ( I wouldnt be without mine!) why not tighten up so far & ask a local garage mechanic (car or bike) to torque it up to recommended value?

If you are willing to do certain jobs on a bike or car then a torque wrench should really be part of your tool kit anyway.
It's not like they're even that expensive to buy, it's just that sometimes things need to be done properly, and because of the front sprocket nut issue this is one of those times. :smash

Having missed the point of a torque wrench and after 40 years working on bikes, I don't understand how the nut can unscrew itself after you've engaged the locking washer on the splines and bent a tab over???? Please explain?

I was great believer in torque wrenches. Until all my 4 brand new not cheap calibration certificated torque wrenches just stopped working and I have focced up few bolts.
INB4 I was pampering them, never dropped or used them to untighten, kept them untighten too.
Now I just use my hands.Still alive. Make of that what you want.
FYI never seen in any garage that I has been, mechanics to use torque wrenches for high torque bolts like say swingarm bolts. Only for precision low torque like for engine heads.

My apologies. Just reread your posts. My 2005 Fazer 1000 has a different nut to the failed ones. I assume the mechanism for failure is a manufacturing fault with the original nut.? Has there been any failures of the gearshaft threads?

Megawat - you need to fill out your avatar with the bike that you have and if it had said 1000 we could of said it was only the 600 that had the issue
