Last model with the black engine and frame, very low miles. What do I need to check for on these models when buying secondhand, any info would be a great help. Many thanks.

Check the exup has been serviced, check it is moving and you don't get the 7k rev counter reading (meaning it's seized). Check compression damping adjusters (flat head driver) rotate at bottom of fork legs, as they can seize.

- As per above check the exup cover and bolts these always rust - most foccer's replace these 6 bolts with either Stainless or Titainium
- Check for clutch noise, as this is indicative of a worn clutch basket as a result of heavy-handedness.
- Check for corrosion around the water in/out pipe on the cam cover, water/crap collects in there. Prior to re-painting the cover, those crevices will have to be soked in WD40(or similar) and then cleaned out with an airline. (you do not want to remove the covers and rick crap/dirt dropping into the engine)
- Check the compression and preload damping adjusted aren't seized, replacement new is silly money and good s/h forks are hard to find.
- Remove and check the front infills (2x screws and allen bolt each, takes 5 mins), these are prone to cracking. And while these are off check the 4 upper and lower headlight mounting points - if the bike has had even a minor drop these crack/snape - same s/h issue as with forks.
- And with the infill's removed also check the underside of the clocks there should be a rubber damper on the r and l underside of the clock - it stopped the infill vibrating against the clocks.
- Check the oil cooler (its directly behind the downpipes and has some pipes coming out of it) for corrosion and rot, replacement required draining coolant/engine oil, removable of exhaust and radiator. S/h part can be found on ebay and job easy enough but time consuming.
- Check center stand for rust, if rotted through will need replacing. If just rusty can be powder coated.
- Check for general spanner abuse, the FZS1000 is such an easy bike to work in there shouldn't be many signs of nut burring and such.
- Buy a low mileages model, the lower the better - less change of ALL of the above.

The state of the exup valve has nothing to do with a riding skill, if the previous owner dosen't know about the issue then they aren't likely to have done something about it. Even more so considering it not on the official Yamaha check list - and you know all this.

Check condition of exhaust header nuts & studs. Saw a late model FZS 1000 the other day and while bike looked reasonable-these had corroded badly which can involve a world of pain & expense if the studs snap. Otherwise as others have already said. Good Luck- theres some really nice ones out there for not too much £

The point is, we are dealing with a new FZS1000 owner - best foot forward and all that.

No mate been looking at several, but the last of the Gen 1s seems to get a good name, as do all Gen 1s.

Agreed, they are a hard act to follow, Ive had mine from new, other bikes have come and gone but can't seem to be able to part with the Gen 1 even after 146,000 miles. :)

Nice mileage Kenyun....new a courier who stuck 250k on one so a long way to go yet.
