Title: Crap mirrors on '98
Post by: ReflexiveBeef on 15 June 2016, 12:31:04 am
Hi all, fed up of looking at my shoulders in the mirror, any suggestions on how to make a couple of spacers, or does anyone have a set of '01 mirrors to sell? Cheers  :b

"SHOULDERS" how tall (short) are you because I am 5'8" and I see my elbows. For which you have to learn to do the "funky chicking " :guitar

I've got a thou and I still have to do the funky chicken and the foxeye 600 I had was no difference. I think the only rear proper improvement you can make is to switch to bar end mirrors, but I've never used them personally

Switch the left and right over. It makes a bit of a difference.

I don't get it  :o , more info please I might have a look at doing this myself

Yeah I like the funky chicken :D
I've swapped mine over for Cheapo R6 pattern mirrors from fleabay, they've made a good difference.

The mirrors are not identical. So switching them over left/right results in the head of the mirror being higher or lower (cant remember which) than originally. It might make the difference you need.

Sorry still being a bit thick here, do you swap the whole stem from the fairing which would then mean that the mirror is facing the wrong way, is the mirror head then able to twist all the way around, perhaps raising it on its ball and socket/knuckle joint.

You swap everything, mirror and connecting rods and rubber covers.
You don't have to 'twist' anything.
Put it this way....
Sit on the bike, take the left mirror off, keep it facing you and then move it over to the right hand side and locate it in the holes.
You'll see the mirror stem is in a more upright position, repeat doing the right to left.
Secure both and adjust the angle of the mirror to give you rear view, you will find they sit at a weird position but that's because your used to the way they are now. When I done it I had far better view with original position but I'm a short arse at 5'5" and not broad, so I can see no problems. :)

Now you see thats the bit I dont get because the left mirror points to the left if I took it off whilst keeping it facing me it would still be pointing to the left and so sitting over the clocks.
Maybe I need a few more beers to understand

It sits a wee bit taller bit more upright tbh but not to my liking tbh
You can turn the rubbers around and then twist the mirror housing (as you mentioned earlier) 180% and try that but as I can see ok I didn't pursue that option.

Surly sitting more upright would make it worse - it needs to be sitting more at an angle to stick out more and not more upright

Yep, well it didn't work for me!
Just normal position works fine for me, maybe I'm just lucky :)

You have nothing, other than 10 minutes of time, to lose by trying this. It may save you a fortune on new mirrors.

mine are on as Yamaha intended and I can get a reasonable view of whats behind me, sometimes need to do a bit of elbow jiggling to get a better view and wearing a jacket with heavy elbow armour doesn't help the situation much, I was thinking of getting low renthals with the logic being it should drop my elbows a bit giving me a better view. has anybody else found that they get better rear view by using lower rise bars?

The problem is I start a simple, not very necessary job like that and then regret it after mullering the yamaha cheese nuts, dropping the spanner on my tank, spending 1/2 hour chasing the washer fairies that live in my garage only to give in half way cause I wanted to go out for a ride but now its all too late cause its looking a bit cloudy.
I came up with this idea a while ago, the inside would be sculptured and marry up with the back of the oem and be glued/velcro in position.

Cheers fellas, the cheapest option I've found today is learning to do the funky chickung ;D might give swapping the mirrors round a go too cuz I'm a cheap ass student. I gotta be honest that's a weird idea fazersharp, but impressive if you pulled it off! How about some of those stick-on square bent mirror things on the shoulder (correction- elbow) viewing area as a halfway house?

Possible someone fitted the R1 mirrors to it before you bought it.
They have shorter stems than the fazer ones but look identical other than that

I would reckon it's best to contact that seller and ask the questions like bolt hole distance etc as finding anyone on here who purchased these would be quite slim I'd think.

No, your probably not but you asked about those certain mirrors  and I merely suggested you actually contact them and ask the questions and I also stated that it would be slim that anyone on here bought from that particular seller.
I don't have the problem of not seeing behind me, I was only trying to help you.

I have just bought some from ebay 152130239199 they were up for £14.50 buy it now or best offer, I offered £10 and got myself a pair of brand new mirrors delivered fast and fit perfect, they are about 50mm wider than the original boxeye mirrors, and they don't 'stick up' like the foxeye mirrors do, pictures should help you. i'm well chuffed with mine :lol

there from Guernsey

i'm also not keen on the genuine foxeye mirrors sticking out above the screen, now these are not genuine and there a slightly different shape to the originals, much sqaure'er just like the boxeye headlights, i'm proper happy with mine,

now just clear indicator lenses and black handle bars and it'l be almost perfect

Right --- I tried the swap over the OEM mirrors hack and it didnt work as I could not get the now left mirror on the right side to twist to anything like a position that to see out of, the ball socket just don't twist that way, the swap over sides "hack" must be for the foxeye or somthing

I'm struggling with this too. I'm 15 stone and fairly broad shouldered. Have a he'll of a job trying to get the mirrors in a position where I can see the road behind and not me/sky/who knows!!

The mirrors you guys bought on eBay are still available from the same seller so I'll give it a go!! Are there any modifications needed? Ie drilling or just a straight swap?

Cheers

They're not too well made, and i wasn't expecting them to last long to be honest, but they're still on the bike a year later surprisingly enough.
The rubber part is just a bit ill fitting, but i've kept them on simply because they give me about 40% more mirror to look at.
Basically you're getting what you pay for.

If you produce a decent engineering drawing of the spacers you should be able to 3d print these parts for a fraction of the cost.  :)

I got a pair of the cheap ebay FZS1000 mirrors on the boxeye, and they are alot better visibility wise. They do shake a bit, but at least you can see beyond elbows. I has to run a M6 die down the thread as its wasn't quite right, by hand as the studs are close together.

ebay seller was xmotor-2008

Left hand one collects rain when your're parked as i have found out these last couple of weeks...

New mirrors fitted! £14 from the same seller. Fitting dead easy, need to tighten the pivot bolts a little as they are a bit floppy lol I know they're a wee bit big but I can now see behind me. I did think about bar end mirrors? Not sure if id still have the same problem? New cockpit view attached. :)
