Bought myself a project a few weeks back which took a bit of a downward turn today. Looks like top end is knackered and am not sure if it's worth repairing.
Hence am considering breaking it to recoup my costs. Thought I'd put a note on owners club and see what interest is out there.
Good parts available include
Rear Wheel and Tyre (Brusgestone) plenty of life.
Front wheel ( tyre No good)
New Chain and sprockets bought with bike ( unused)
Rear Calliper rebuilt professionally by powerhouse
Front Callipers in good nick
New Pads frt and rear still in box
Good original wiring with alarm bypass
Seat (no tears)
Good battery
Dash clocks all ok
Bars and switch gear all ok
Carbs all complete with new seals and gaskets
Bodywork in Silver
Bikini fairing with fox eye lights all good
Tank good no dents
Tail unit no cracks but scratched.
Indicators all ok
Rear lights all ok
Radiator Good
Foot rests and levers all cleaned up in good condition.
Air box with new filter

If all the other parts are in decent condition why not look for a decent used engine?

What's wrong with the top end? How did you diagnose it?

Top end issues? That's gotta be either knackered exhaust studs or cam chain issue has caused the pistons to hit the valves. Either way, unless you've had the bike a while and have a relationship with it, I would probably do the same thing.
I'm in the market for a new centre stand (waiting for one to come on 'an auction website' for <£20 delivered or collected)

Have maybe been a bit hasty. Having had a nights sleep on it I'm going to have another look tonight and see if it's salvageable. It exhaust studs that are the problem. Appreciate the messages and will let you know if I decide to break it.

You got it as a project right? So don't give up on it straight away! Add up everything the bike needs and the tools you'll need to fix it and see if it's worth doing. If it is I'd take the head off and bring it to a machine shop and get them to get the studs out. That's the easiest and best way to do it imo. I'd be surprised if it was more than £50 to get the studs removed and new studs put in. If you get it done properly you know you won't have anymore problems with them in the future. Plus you can do your valve clearance and check the condition of the valves, cam chain and cylinders while you're at it. Add in the price of a new head gasket to the studs and you're sorted. Or you could have a go at getting them out while the engine's still in place. It's a bit more awkward but possible. I think it was deadeye on here who put up a link to an extractor and impact that worked for him. Another option is, I've seen someone on here use a small threaded sleeve that they screwed over the end of the snapped stud to give some more threads, then screw a new stud into those threads. That's a bit of a bodge but it seemed to work for them

I agree, projects always have issues to be solved.
Unless you're utterly skint, or can't do most of the work yourself I'd keep her and get the engine sorted.

So far have managed to change all studs in situ using a flexible extension to drill so that I can get past frame and a long reach tap wrench. All ok - just did 2 a night after work so that I could take my time. Exhaust downpipes look past their best but will refit it for now just to confirm no other engine problems. Want a stainless system if I end up keeping her.
Just cleaning and repaintong pipes and fan before I refit them.
At least if I do scrap her the parts to selll will be clean 😀

Just me again, wondered if you still have the seat from your bike, the chain & sprocket & also all 4i indicators?

does make me chuckle... the guy is having a go at fixing the bike.. and just because he had a stupid thought and listed parts he is still being badgered for the parts to be sold.... read the whole posts...he's trying to fix it up.. :rolleyes
