Post by: bamby on 21 April 2016, 01:27:23 pm
Hi all can someone point me in the direction of where starter motor is,bike not wanting to fire up,new battery installed and to begin with fired up straight away. Now takes forever but turns over ok,need to check with multimeter if there is an issue, also an explanation on how to do this would be great as well.T.I.A

You say starting takes forever but it turns over ok… that doesn't sound like a starter problem, more like carbs or sparks.
Anyway, to answer the question, the starter motor is the black cylinder under carbs 3&4. If you get one probe of your multimeter on the terminal on the starter and the other probe connected to the chassis, you should get a reading of 9 to 12 volts when you thumb the starter button.

Ok cheers have also realised I did the mod to headlight using the third pin frim dip feed, will check if that draining battery would putting an in line fuse help if that the case.It might be the case where battery is not charging as riding, did 500 miles a couple of wkends ago had trouble starting then

the headlight mod will not cause a problem. the reason the second bulb was disconnected by Yamaha was to get around EU rules about lights with separate reflectors. the additional drain on the battery is minimal so unless you battery/alternator are focced, it wont make a difference.

Do you use the choke when starting the bike from cold? Many people on here never use it, others have always used it on a cold engine.

Only time I use choke is when it absolutely freezing...i put new battery in on Monday..will check when I get home if it needs a boost in which case I would presume it the alternator  that's knackerd.

If it is turning over ok then try using half choke.

So I checked the battery when running it's sitting at about 14 with lights off, with them in it inly drops to 13,so that nit the issue.Tomorrow will check and balance carbs it required have ordered new plugs and fuel filter. And if I that fails will keep at it till I find out what it is :rolleyes
