Hi, just changed the pads on one of the front brake callipers. When mounting the top bolt ( using a shitty torque wrench) the bolt has snapped leaving the threaded part in the calliper. So im trying to work out the cheaper and hassel free option of whether to get a second hand calliper from ebay roughly £30-£40 or to see if i can get a shop to drill it out, im not sure if the later is possible as the calliper i understand can shatter. Please help!!

Did you use copper grease?

I would have thought it would unscrew very easily considering it has only just been screwed in and there is no tension on it.

Actually i was gonna say be careful in the future because copper grease alters torque wrench readings quite a bit, i found out the hard way on my rear caliper.
Takes some doing snapping one of those front caliper bolts though, even if the torque setting is quite high on them, i was wondering if they aren't OEM.

Take the caliper and clamp it in a vice, Use blocks of wood to protect it if the vice has serrated jaws. Get an old drill bit (6mm-1/4"), Blunt the drill bit, You want it to grip but not start cutting. Use the drill from the inside of the caliper onto the unbroken end of the bolt. Make sure the drill has a slow start on it and turn the speed & torque right down. Lean into the drill and make sure you are applying a fair bit of pressure


If done right the drill will grip the bolt enough to start winding the broken thread out. Only wind it out until you have enough protruding thread to get hold off with a pair of grips to wind the rest of the way out. Then just to make sure the damaged bolt hasn't caught the thread clean up with greased tap of the correct thread.

Update. I bave managed to remove the bolt using Deefer666 advice, was actually quite easy to do cheers buddy. Just have to wait for the new bolts and a shit load of copper grease, brake fluid and a new banjo bolt washer to come in the post. Sorted cheers everyone.
