Title: Rear Wheel Question?
Post by: CraigL on 15 February 2016, 09:49:30 pm
Evening all  :)

Not quite sure what happened to my question  :rolleyes

Took the rear wheel out the thou to replace chain, sprockets and brake disc and something seemed odd in the fact that the wheel bearing doesn't visually seem central in the wheel (from the disc side)
The bike has never given me reason to doubt that it's true, just seems strange that there is approx 2mm difference in the hub wall thickness to the bearing edge.

No, it has to be a round tyre

I think a photo would help us understand the question a bit better.  Well, some of us at least ... ;)

Think someone has been in here before me to replace the wheel bearings, made a bit of a mess by the look of things  :(

Probably tried to lever out the bearing not realising there is a circlip in there :rolleyes

Looks like the casting was out and has been bored true. Check the centres of the disc bolt holes- they look concentric to the bearing.
If you've got access to a lever type DTI you could try installing the wheel and check for run out at the rim- you might have to deflate the tyre to do this.

Been and took various measurements from the bearing edge to the brake disc bolt holes and to the outer edge of the wheel rim. All measurements are equal, so am happy with that, must be as advised by Rob R - a poor casting and the machining has made it true.
Unfortunately I don't have access to any machine to check run out. Will sit wheel back in swing arm and see if I can determine if it's run out it true.
It all started due to an advisory at mot stating that the brake disc is slightly warped, so it took the opportunity to replace brake disc, chain and sprockets. Brake disc appears to be level by using the edge of a steel rule.

I'm sure that if there was significant run out you would have felt it pogoing!

I'm sure it's all good. If I hadn't have had to remove the wheel, I'd never have known  :)
One of the disc mounting bolts wouldn't come out for anything but an engineering shop across from where I work drilled it out for me and told me it had been put in cross threaded.
