1150 - 1250 is a better idle speed and that's what I use for carb synch.

No pictures - too dark!  You need a flashlight to search for the synch screws but they are there to be found. :)

Pat's site has a section on synching the carbs with some pictures which might help - http://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1/carburetorsynchronization.html (http://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1/carburetorsynchronization.html)

You will need a long screwdriver to reach all the adjusting screws :)

1200rpm is good.  A bit higher than Yamaha say but keeps the oil pressure up at idle.  :)

To find the middle screw can be a challenge. Look for the metal bracket with the section cut out between the middle carbs. Now shine your torch over the connectors on your coil through that notch. If you look along the beam of light, you should be able to see the screw.

I prefer the rods to the dials, but that is because I have had my carbtune for years and have never used one of the others. I don't think there is a big difference between them.
