Congrats BBB....nice xmas pressie for sure.......be interesting to hear the long term reviews for sure.........was tempted with your old fazer briefly until i realised i didnt have 1k never mind 3.5k :lol ......was tempted to ask my old man to go halves & that was pointless as i havent been to his in 18 months so he'd basically be abusing it at my expense.........i still reckon it is good to have both if you can afford to coz if the fun is short lived on the kwak it'll be a hole lot easier to flog on.........not that i would suggest such a thing ;)

Nice one BBB having owned both the SX & an FZ1 you will enjoy the SX , performance wise nothing between them, handling the SX is more forgiving , sex appeal the SX hands down. Build quality???? make sure you plaster the SX in AFC 50 if you are a winter rider, failure to do so will end up in furry nuts and bolts.

I have a mate who has racked up 75k on his SX, I borrowed it in April this year and was still looking good and still went like a super sports bike. His only issues to date have been Rectifer warranty claim , his ignition barrel has just failed also rear caliper problem.

Enjoy it a great bike, Lew

Nice! I have fancied one since they came out but I just like my FZ1 so much I can't bear to part with it. I will be interested to hear how they compare long term.

Took it out for its maiden voyage today, still running it in so was pretty tame, it's very lively low down and can't wait to open it up. The pipes are rediculously throaty loud, which is just braw

They are a real tool handle almost as good as my ZX10R, with about 50hp less but with only a few Nm of torque less, which in the real world is far more usable.

I was seriously considering getting one but just couldn't let the 10R go, so got an XJR instead.  If you've not had a Kawa for a while keep all the black stuff clean and well oiled with protector if you're going to use it in all weathers or it will start to show signs of rust in weeks if you don't.

Even in the summer months use something like MO94 to protect them.

Hi BBB just a heads up I notice you have Paddock stand bobbins fitted. The pipes you have fitted may clear the chain side swing arm ok but if for some reason you fit the stock cans double check the clearance is still there. It is one of the reasons a lot on the SX forum will tell you to get an ABBA stand. Quite a few fitted bobbins only to find they interfere with the stock can on the chain side. Some have had the misfortune of sharing off the dog the bobbin screws into, just a thought.

Those pipes look seriously cool - understated but purposeful.

I'd take your time before you sell your GEN1.  I traded mine in but a couple of years later had to buy another one back again I missed it so much!  Still love it to bits.

To ' sadlonelygit'....... yes, laugh all you want, it has about the same output as a gen1 as standard. ( Wait till it's tweaked though & then try being a comic )
Output though is where the similarities end. It is ahead in every other department.
I think it looks great & those cans really suit it. Enjoy the experience bbb  8)

Having owned both bikes all be it my SX was a 2011 model sold it to a friend, my FZ1 was faster and out gunned the SX every time. the 2016 model is even slower sorry. The difference is the SX will out handle the FZ1 GEN2 I am talking and has a smoother power delivery.

A mate of mine has got a 2014 Z1000, handling wise, it's all about the pilot and when you start getting up to silly speeds my Ivanised gen 1 has got the legs on it. To the degree that I purposely let him take the lead so I can slipstream him and pop past him, flat on the tank, giving him the Barry Sheene two fingers  8)
It pisses him off that much when he thinks about how much money he's spent to get  owned by a twelve year old bike.
He's talking about getting one of those BMW 1000R's but worried my gen 1 will tramp all over that too.  :D

:rollin :rollin  Like it. Anytime though bud.  :)

My real point for those who can't read between the lines was that he's proud as punch of his new bike & some can't resist a dig  :)

I think it is more about the amount of money a z1000sx costs for not much improvement to a gen 1 or 2. Both bikes standard are similar and much the same when tuned, so it is more a personal thing regarding looks and being more modern. I think of the z1000sx as a newer version of the gen 1/2 rather than a better bike.

All bikes are a matter of opinion.... I could have bought either the s1000r or the tuono v4. I opted for the tuono v4 because i think it looks better, it sounds better and in my opinion it has that Italian ride that has more soul than an in line four. Before i bought it i thought in line fours were the best configuration, but since buying a v4 i have changed my thoughts on what feels and drives best. The s1000r is still an amazing bike tho.. :)

If the truth be known, it doesn't matter what you ride. It's all about how it makes you feel, what you can afford and what you get from it.
Performance figures and power stats are just numbers we like to have bragging rights over.
In the real world on real roads (apparently) there are limits that pretty much level most bikes and a good, experienced pilot or a complete lunatic will have the jump on a more powerful bike every time, unless it's a long straight road. Just my opinion.

Very true Dazza. The roads I ride out here in Spain, when I had SX it was fun. My FZ600 S2 was even better around the mountains. 1 ltr bikes struggled to hang on around the twisties My FZ1 was fun but the MT-09 is even better. I don't think there is much out there better for where I ride.
The SX is a cracking bike and the mk 2 is a big improvement on the mk1 I had. Suspension is much improved , the preload on the rear is so much easier to adjust, traction control etc!! and if you could call a bike sexy the SX certainly is all that. Good as the Fazers were the SX forced Yamaha to drop an aging design and re-think there product range, the SX killed the CBF Honda MK2 1000, what an over priced bike that was.
If some one wanted a decent valued sports touring bike, best value for money out there has to be the big Suzuki Bandit.

+1 on bikes only being able to go up to a certain speed on the uk roads. A bike is more about how much you enjoy the ride than how big the numbers are. I had a gsxr1000k6 a few years ago and it was a fantastic bike, but i felt frustrated on it because unless i was on a racetrack i couldn't get the best out of it. That was the reason for buying a semi naked bike. I enjoy the handling and the character of the engine more than the outright speed of it.

Well even though I've only done 30 odd miles so far and still not had the full throttle experience yet, so I cant fully compare it against the Gen1, but what I can say is it is a bit underpowered in its stock format against the full monty with 15 tooth front sprocket. However I do have plans to address this with a PC5, change the gearing, modify the air box & piper cross air filter and remapped ECU etc.

The SX handling is way better and has better technology with ABS, power modes, traction control and slipper clutch.

But if you're judging a bike on straight line 0-150 the Gen1 will have the edge, but even with a Nitron rear shock and racetech internals the stock SX will have the edge in the real world street riding as it feels more planted, more stable in the corners (even with new tyres)....so all in all I'm very happy to have this in my garage alongside the Gen1.

I will give another review once it's fully run in and modified accordingly
