How hard should it be to loosen the damper rod bolt. Bearing in mind the only mate I have is a b&d workmate is it possible.
Any advice much appreciated

I used a broom handle and shaved the end to a taper so that it'd jam in the inner tube.
I had the advantage of a bench vice, but you should be able to grip the broom handle ok with a workmate (broom handle lengthwise in the jaws to give a decent area for it to work with).

You should be able to hold it tightly and then with a sharp crack of the wrench it should undo.

I just cracked mine before i took the rest of the fork apart.
With my weight on the fork leg there was enough friction in there to stop the thing from turning and i didn't have to make any of my brooms into something good for killing vampires.

Just watched Del boys garage Skippernick :thumbup the way he undid his so easily makes me think the previous owner of my breakers leg has over tightened the nut. Also using a standard alen key with bar probably doesn't help.
Think you're right Fazerider, workmates are shyte for gripping so may go shopping later :)

Not sure they actually exist any more so settling for an engineers vice ;) just debating whether I should go for a cheap £20-30 or cheap £50-60

I brought an engineers vice a little while ago, its a bottom of the range vice from a company that makes some very expensive vice's, its at my brothers and I'm going there tonight, will post the name later. Think I paid around £35 for it

Got it Loosened now. In the end I screw it to 2 planks to hold it steady :D
looking at ordering new seals, wemeto seals measure 41x53x8/9.5
Whereas m&p are 41x53x8/10.5 any idea what the 10.5 is referring to?

cheers, unfortunately havent got an impact gun. Could be a reason to get a compressor though ;)

real handy having one around. very versatile piece of kit. the only problem with them is they take up a bit of space. if you're tight on space an electric impact is the way to go and with them you've a lot of torque and no waiting time or noise like with the compressor but a compressor can do a lot more

A guess ;).....41=internal size , 53=external size , 9.9/10.5 =depth , either will be ok.ive used wemoto ones myself with no problems....

Thats how I do it. loosen the top while its still in the yokes. Remove from the yokes, finish undoing the tops and remove the springs and drain the oil. Then an impact gun with an allen socket in the bottom and buzz the bottom bolt out. If you do it without taking the tops out and draining the oil you will end up with oil everywhere.
