Got a set of these Acerbis Dual Road Handguards, but have a slight problem fitting them. These hand guards fit into the bar ends, but when I remove the bolt for the bar end weights, the bolts supplied with the hand guards are considerably bigger than the bar end weight bolts, and so will not screw in. I could use the bar end weight bolts but they're not long enough. So is it possible to get longer bar end weight bolts, or is it even possible to remove the bit inside the handlebar in the hope that there is a bigger screw hole available for the Acerbis bolts to fit into..?
-
Just get longer bar end weight bolts, if you have a local nut and bolt shop near you just take original bolt with you and tell them how much longer you need it, or ebay if no local shop.
-
Local bike repair shop didn't have any & I can't see any on ebay…?!? Seems they might be trickier to track down than I first thought..
-
I'm having a similar problem atm with the acerbic handguards on my DRZ. Have you got a photo of the guards and bar end bolts and have they got the cone insert that expands inside the bars. ?
-
Picture of the bolts would be helpful.

Have you checked if they hit the fairing because as far as I know all handguards do
-
The bolt on the top is the original one that was holding in my bar end weights, and the bottom bolt is the one that is supplied for the hand guards, considerable difference in size. I've checked for the hand guards coming into contact with the wind screen & they do but only very marginally at full lock so not really a problem.
-
Could be a problem at mot time if the guards touch the fairing.
I fitted the Acerbis guards to my gen1 1000 and had to remove them at the mot station as tester would not pass it with them fitted as they touched the screen on full lock, he admitted that they were very unlikely to cause a problem but if I had an accident and the bike was inspected and the guards were found to touch the fairing then it could be claimed the steering was compromised by them.
Once I had the mot certificate I just put them back on.

Yep thats what I thought. I go through every winter looking into this just to take a little of the wind chill off. The option could be to cut the end off the guard so it doesn't touch and the 600 is worse for hitting the fairing than the 1000

Whats the bolt length and size, everythings out there if you look in the right place.
Dave Middleton has m8 socket caps as long as 150mm, not cheap admittedly but should be able to find what you want

Managed to get longer M6 bolts from B&Q..the hand guards are now on but now just need to severely tighten them to make sure they are totally secure & don't move about

Pic (hopefully..!!)
-
thanks how much do they hit the fairing and where, can you take a pic of that please
-
They just clip the fairing on full lock, but the guards seem fairly pliable so don't see it being a major issue. Will try to get a pic when I'm next in my lock-up
