Title: Fuel system cleaner additive
Post by: YamFazFan on 18 November 2015, 07:22:58 pm
Has anyone used it?. Does it work?.

My FZS 600 is running very poor from cold start-up now. Quite easy to start still, but feels like it's only running on 2/3 cylinders until I get 100 yards or so down the road and past 4/5k revs, when normal service is resumed and it runs and revs cleanly.

Once warmed-up the running is much improved and feels like it's running on 4 all the time, but still feels hesitant and rough below 4/5k revs in any gear.

The idle speed has also dropped significantly.

The bike is completely standard, low mileage (under 7000), regularly and recently serviced.

The bike often sits for several weeks between runs and i'm wondering if the issue is carb deposits caused by deteriorated/evaporated fuel?.

I'm hoping for an easy fix before investigating further :)

Thanks in anticipation. YFF.

The ONLY one I've ever had results with is STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner.
Use half a bottle per full tank over 2 tanks.
I normally use it once a year.

Looks like the STP or Redline stuff is going to be worth a go then.  I see Halfords do STP.

Thanks fellas.

Make sure it's the 'complete' petrol cleaner, there's 3 or 4 types but this has more concentrated cleaning properties in it.

If you're not in a hurry, or tighter than a gnats chuff, then you can save a few quid on Flebay.

+1 for stp, although personally I've never needed it in the fazer, just other bikes!

If the poor running at low revs issue with my Fazer is being caused by pilot jet/s blocked with evaporated fuel residue, how likely is it that fuel system cleaner additive is going to shift it?. Would it probably require carburettor removal and dismantling to clear it out?.

Years ago I bought one of the original round headlight Fireblades that had been stood for years unused.  When I took it for a spin it barely ran, wouldn't pull 4th gear and sputtered all the way.

I expected it to clear after a week or so but it was the same.  I used some fuel cleaner, redex or somesuch from Halfords just to see if it did anything.  Cleared up a treat and I never had to take the carbs apart or anything.  It ran perfect for a few years before I sold it.

Theres hope in them thar hills!  Plus for the price its worth a shot, as long as its running and pulling it through the system it should clean it enough to make a difference.

I like to know my bikes are running 100% so I'd take the carbs apart and clean everything. I think an afternoon's work for the assurance that it's running at full fitness is worth it and you always learn something doing it. I've ridden a couple of far superior bikes some of them nearly new that in my opinion were running worse that my 20 year old bike. Shitty dragging brakes with no feel, badly adjust clutch cable, flogged chain over due oil but I suppose ignorance is bliss. Nothing beats proper maintenance and doing the job right the first time.

Update: I added a can of Motul fuel system cleaner to a tank of fuel, but unfortunately didn't notice any difference in the running of the bike :(.

However, I have noticed that the down-pipe of cylinder number 3 is significantly cooler immediately after a ride than the other three, so I guess the problem is with that one.

Yeah that's true darrsi.

I happened to be in Bury St. Edmunds and popped into Bowers Motorcycles and Motul was what they had in stock, so I thought i'd give it a go.

I use one called Seafoam. Buy it off ebay for about £13 works a treat! put it in the oil aswell, clears up any residue out the oil and on internals. Quietened down my lifters aswell.

Can I ask what fuel people are using..

Using supermarket fuel for me has caused my foxeye to run lumpy.... Shell unleaded for commuting I think is the best, the performance Vpower unleaded fuel makes the bike feel great,

I used Profi Fuel Max 270mlused (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400208821338?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

This definitely cleaned things out. My foxeye has done 43k now and feels peppy under acceleration after a treatment.

One other product to thow in the mix is this Archoil AR2300 Fluid System Cleaner 250ml (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221424248396?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

Tried them all over the years and came to the conclusion that my bike runs best on 97 RON fuel.
99 RON is okay but unnecessary, and overpriced.
And 95 RON just falls short for me, and i notice the bike perks up when i used 97 again.

A good carb balance will almost always help smooth it out. I've used stp stuff before and it certainly didn't hurt but balancing the carbs is what really helped mine run super smooth. No hesitation after start up and pulls much better through all revs in all gears.

Using Shell 95 RON

Got the bike booked into the workshop for week after next when I get back from hols.

All sorted now. The workshop had the carbs off today. A blocked primary jet and general gunk in there apparently.

Along with a fresh set of spark plugs it now feels like a new bike!. I'm well chuffed :)

Need to get some more miles on it and keep that fuel flowing round.
