Looks like a z1000 street fighter project. What are the large angled supports on either side of the rad supposed to hold?

at last new inline four bike from Yamaha  :)

I hope they will do faired version at some point  :lol

The current look is shall I say "too modern"  :eek seems to me like somebody has put random bolts and bits in a bag and then gave the bag to somebody else and told him - here it is assemble it LOL

I can live with the look if the bike is good

At last. A Crossplane 1000 Yamaha that doesn't have a race riding position. That looks proper dangerous. I want one badly. In black with subtle hints of red, please! In fact, I'd go as far as a 'fuckyeah!' with that one.

It probably means a Tracer version in a year's time, too. I'll be amazed if it's under 10k at MCN is suggesting though.

I'm highly amused that they managed to get Rossi and Lorenzo on the same stage for the launch!

I like the look of it......however i reckon it is just a modern MT01 and i suspect it will be far too heavy to handle nearly as well as the mt09.....one for the posers i say....still cool 8)

50 quid its lighter than either Gen 1 or 2 Fazers and the MT 09 Tracer....

As for handling - it's an R1....

Interesting.....very interesting......this could be the bike I've been waiting for.......wonder how long it will take them to get a fairing on it to compete with the Kawasaki Z1000sx and new Suzuki GSX-S1000f........got to say I'm fairly impressed

Is it just me or do these sort of bikes just look like they've had every spare bit on the production line bungee onto them?  :rolleyes
I just think there's too many lumps and bumps on them, no smooth, slim, flowing lines to the bodywork especially. I'm really not into all this angular design  :(

Yup. I agree. I'm sure there are reasons - some bits, like the lump of plastic over the cylinder head, probably hide a mass of cables, others will be for aerodynamics, some just for show, but the net effect is a crash in the parts bin.

It does look highly technical and again, I'm sure that's because bikers are supposed to love technical stuff, but it's still 'fussy' for want of a better word. And contrast the MT-10's look with what's happening on the urban biker modification scene where everything is stripped down and basic.

I happen to really like the MT-10s look though. Looks like Biffa Bacon's Dad's bike. It looks like it would kick your head in for spilling your pint.

It might be a great bike, but it looks awful. Far too much plastic and not keen on headlight and cowling. It also looks cheap and flimsy like a chinese bike..

Hmmm.... Some aspects look good, but I go along with those who think it's just too bitty. If I had one I'd be thinking "that'd have to go, and that, and that" until there wouldn't be much of the original left.
And I bet it comes with loads of "rider aids"!
In the end, probably not for me.

Really? You could say that about all the MT range. The 09 is littered with bits and bobs too, but I don't think it makes it look Chinese at all. Chinese bikes are big lumps of roughly finished metal and plastic stuff with substandard paint, but this looks precision engineered. The problem is it looks over designed.

What I mean by that is that it's like the whole of Yamaha's design team are still fascinated by their CAD/CAM tools and have over designed everything. Not everything has to a recess here, a clever angle there or an embossed widget stuck on the doohickey. They just need to chill out a bit and use beautiful shapes rather than trying to use every tool in Autodesk's menus.

Does anyone know anyone who can enlarge fucking STUPIDLY small tank they've given it? Seriously, if a MotoGP bike has 22 litres and an Isle of Mann TT R1 has 24, why the fuck can't they put a 21 litre tank on a naked bike. They're so proud of their cruise control and crow about it being able to be used for distance and then stick a titchy little tank on it.

Yet another bike that can't touch the Gen 1 for usability.

I'm still buying one though. Or should I wait for the Tracer version which is almost certainly being tested right now.....

Maybe not chinese  :eek  but definitely cheap looking. It will be similar to the rest of the mt range in that there is so much tacky plastic all over it. I looked at pics of the mt 07 and mt 09 and thought it looked quite good, so i went to local yamaha dealer and didn't like either because of the plastic and allen bolts everywhere :thumbdown

the pillion accommodation looks iffy, in fact decidedly uncomfortable, and the tail area looks unfinished to me as if the plastic has been removed. the cowl above the lights looks tacky too. the wheels and engine look great however.

and what's with the silver pegs and hangers when the rest of the bike is black? i think that some simple changes would improve it no end. i'll wait for it to age 10 years, pick one up for 2k and modify it to my taste, seems to be my m.o.

To begin with i thought it looked a heavy mofo.

If it is indeed basically an R1 naked then i accept that i am wrong on the above.

For uk riding only i really dont get the whole small tank issue considering most folk probably stop to eat & crow & share photos & text the missus every 50 miles......i bet some owners dont even manage the 50 miles.......but i accept that more is better.....only if the fuel sacrifice can be proven worthwhile in regards to other positive aspects of the bike.

Who could afford an R1 yet not want an R1......old farts basically.....old farts with more money than sense.

So basically this bike is for old, loaded, posing farts with more money than ability.

The MT07 range is the closest thing to the old fazer by far...not technically but in spirit, cheap, affordable, capable and realistic for the average bloke........own it new and cherish it and go fast on it..............ok anyone can spend a couple of grand on a 15 year old sportsbike....but the fazer brought new bikes to the population.

These new bikes are cool but they are missing the point a bit i reckon.

Well, it will be like the Gen 1 Fazer - same architecture but differing in some ways like the crank weight will be more (not many details as yet) - but the reckoning is 199 kilos which is pretty light in this day and age given how much catalytic converters weigh. Oo, I just checked and it does have the same bore and stroke as last year's R1 not the 2009 model. They've jumped a generation because the FZ1 was based on the previous R1. This one is the current bike. Lovely.

The tank range thing - well, I actually ride bikes. I do around 35,000 miles a year which is why my Gen 1 is just about to top 150,000 miles, the poor old thing. But even if I was a Sunday rider, I would still despise wasting time filling bikes up as much as I hate the forced wait at supermarkets. And that's what filling stations are these days. The real issue is that if you're on a ride out, if you want to stop, you want to be free to choose a nice place not be forced to stop at a bloody filling station. And if you use a bike for commuting like I do, a small tank means a trip to fill up every single day. It drives me up the pole.

The Gen 1 certainly feels top heavy because of the 21 litre tank and I really feel it when turning in or stopping though, but IoM TT bikes tend to tuck it lower under the seat and I just don't understand why bike manufacturers can design 200 bhp machines and yet not work out how to make a larger tank fit and/or look good. Of course, I know the answer really - it's simply because the average biker who does 5k miles per year and doesn't need it. They're not real bikers. They're just posers with a Sunday toy. That should get the cat amongst the pigeons!

And lastly, the Gen 1 when it came out was over £8000 quid. I'd bought a brand new ZX9-R the year before for £7000 so the the original Fazer was never a cheap bike. And if this one is the MCN suggested price of 10k, that's a mere 2k price rise in 15 years. Now that's a bargain.....

It won't be. I reckon it'll be more like 11-12k at least.

Fookin ell aj jay.......so you're telling me that the every 350 miles i do....im not actually riding!.......because im not boring myself with a job that neccesitates 35k a year on a bike that im not capable of being a biker....well in that case id rather not be one thank you very much......if i was you id buy a helicopter :b

Don't panic Noggy, I was only joking!  I even consider hipsters on Ducati Scramblers real bikers. And scooter riders for that matter. For me it's two wheels that make you a biker and it doesn't matter if you're on a Goldwing or a Melody. Mind, Harley riders... well, they're something else entirely. I'm not even sure they're from this planet. JOKE! Before someone misses the tongue in cheek.

I just made the colossal mistake of moving out of London when the prices went up and now I live 60 miles out and can't afford to move back so I either take the train (4500 per YEAR to stand) or use the bike. Which I'd have anyway.

I like the helicopter idea. I bet it's cheaper than Midland Mainline's season ticket....

I think it is a horrible bitsa looking thing, it looks unfinished especially around the radiator oil cooler area. Look a a BMW S100R or V4 Tuono to see how it should be done.

After seeing spy shots of the new KTM GT they have now announced it is being released.

I would like a test ride but this ticks all the boxes for me.

Oh God yes. That is going to be awesome. But I can't deal with the clattering about on big V twins in town. I need the smoothness of a four, they're much more forgiving and useable, which is why the Gen 1 is such a great bike. 20mph to 160 in top, no problems at all.

Looks like the cat took the spot normally reserved for the center stand. Not sure if there is going to be enough room or attach point for an aftermarket one.
That would suck.
Otherwise, I kinda like the Transformer look. I am sure I would get used to it. The bike does look awesome. Hopefully it will be a proper successor to the 1st gen we all love.

Not my cup of dargeeling...its seems bike manufacturers are running out of ideas and just trying cobble together anything as long as its different to last years offering. For me they are straying to far away from the original idea of what a good looking bike was. I love the look of my Fazer to me a lot of the appeal is opening the garage standing back and just standing there loving what you see. I didn't/ don't like the look of the FZ1 but its probably a really good bike but I am just saying aesthetics for me play a big part in buying a bike. I couldn't live with that fairing the whole bike looks like its been designed by four different designers each one having a completely different idea of how a bike should look. Maybe its because I grew up on a staple diet of RD's, Zeds, GSX's and LC's to me they were all beautiful looking bikes...but that not for me ta.

I quiet like the look of it apart from the front end, for me a bike with all that power needs a proper nose cone & screen, I wonder if they will do a faired or part faired version???

To me it looks like Johnny Five at the front.  A pukka half-faired version with a few litres more fuel and it might be a better bike.  But a Gen 1 for the new age?  Ha-ha!

Oh, and it's about time that bike horns moved on from the silly little tinny circular things we've had for decades.  It probably has Lucas stamped on the back. ;)

Tell you what, won't there be some FZ1's at the right money ? I think you'll get a new one for around £ 6500/7000.You could put all kinds of goodies on it,Gillies rearsets, acropovic can, trick levers, etc for another grand, what a tool that would make for the money! Is the MT10 worth upwards of £3000 more?

You can trick the FZ1 as much as you like. It'll still not be as fast, handle as well, or have traction control, slipper clutch, etc., etc.,. The MT10, like the rest of the top nakeds, is leap years ahead. The FZ1 is a 10 yearold design & looks it. If I didn't have an s1r I'd be on this like a shot. It'll be a hoot to ride.

Ah, the age old question of value versus desirability. Yes, a heavily modded FZ1 would be a weapon, but you'd be putting money into a bike that will be less desirable in 3 years time. Is it worth it? I dunno, the Gen 1 was worth modding because it was (and still is!) such characterful and usable bike, but the FZ1, not so much. Simon Hargrieves built a very rapid Fazer and PB featured another naked FZ1 which was excellent, but I think it'd only be worth doing the same to a bargain second hand FZ1, not a new one.

The MT-10 brings Yamaha's street bike bang up to date to compete head on with the BMW S1000R and Tuono V4 and there's a lot of value in that.... as Dek with the S1R suggests.

It was also interesting to compare the Tuono to the MT. The MT's design, fit and finish is incredibly precise. Just looking at the routing of pipes for the oil cooler, water pump and so on - the clearances between them and the engine is half a centimetre whereas on the Tuono it's more like one centimetre. It's so compact every item looks almost like a it should be on life size Tamiya model.

And it has obviously been designed to be accessorised to death. The tiny guard for the clocks is held on with four big fasteners so that's going to be dead easy for aftermarket guys to create screens for, and the rear end is the same. Four screws and the numberplate hanger gets swapped out for a rack or a better looking hanger. In fact, the rear end looks like they just gave up, styling wise. There's not much of it either, so pillions will hate it. Those weird triangular lumps either side of the radiator hold the coolant overflow bottles, by the way. They probably help direct air at the rad too, but they are odd looking.

From a distance, it doesn't look that special, but close up, you can see it's an R1M, and that's not so very different from Rossi's bike. Honestly, looking at it close up, it's deeply desirable.

I had a sit on the KTM Superduke GT too, Tmation. Very very comfy, 23 litre tank, honking great 1300 twin, nearly as much power and torque as my ZZR1400 but way lighter.... It'll be an utter weapon on the road, I think.

You're right,I think I was a bit blinkered with the FZ1,after looking at the MT10 never realized how dated they actually are.
