Everybody hates them and tbh I think most of the time they are a hazard (if your chain lets go it can bunch up around the rear sprocket and cause the wheel to lock, been there) but the law says we have to have one, but it's down to the discretion of the police as to whether its safe or not.
Well thats how I understand it
So, if we have to have one does it matter where its bolted to?
Providing its secure is there any reason why it couldn't be fixed on the back side of the swingarm and curve around the back of the chain providing it covered a few links and as for covering, does it have to be the top run of the chain, a full length guard on the bottom run is still a chain guard.

Don't worry about drilling and tapping(thread forming) into your swing arm, as long as you feel safe with it :)
