Title: Has anyone got some coil spring compressors that I could borrow
Post by: risticuss on 02 September 2015, 02:34:05 pm
As per the title, I'm in need of some spring  compressors and wondered if anyone has any that i could borrow for a couple of days.
I've finally got my replacement spring through for my R6 shock and need to swap it over.
If there is anyone in the Peterborough area +20ish miles that would lend me some that would be great.

I have a set I got for my car but not sure if they are suitable for a motorcycle spring...

These are what I have: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0001KA0JU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0001KA0JU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00)

I'm in Letchworth, so a bit south of you and not just around the corner unfortunately, but happy to help if I can

Cheers for that Deadeye but they're too big and won't fit.
I could just buy a set but for one use seems a bit overkill if i could beg/borrow some :-)

for one use only??   There is a forum full of 'uses' as soon as it reads you have a set to lend   ;)

i recently removed my R6 spring using a car spring compressor tool, unlike deadeyes compressor mine just has the one "hook"....had to take great care as easy to damage paint......how about a load of cable ties,i`ve seen it done before but not tried myself...... ;)

I've seen it done with ratchet straps too but might just see if my local bike garage can do it. Oh well.

Ratchet straps & lots of patience will do it.  I noticed my local branch of Quickfit  has a spring compressor for coil over do dahs, so it might be worth checking.

I've done it before with ratchets but you need good quality ones that are at least 10mm wide. You need to do them two springs together and at 180 degrees then the two next and so on. When you've compressed three you'll have around a one and a half inch free play. Refitting once in position, cut one off at a time doing them in pairs on each spring. Its sounds hairy but it works. Oh and you need a good pair of pliers, better still a pair of mole grips so you don't skin your knuckles whilst trying to tighten the ties. Good luck. :)

Would it be possible to use a couple of large Jubilee clips, just a thought? just compress the spring by screwing the clips tighter?when in position unscrew and remove.

I reckon the Jubilee clip would shred itself on the worm gear under that much pressure...

I've done it this way on car springs, and its risky, very risky! I used about 1/2 dozen large jubilee clips and gingerly removed the spring. I was also very young and stupid back then, almost reckless sometimes!
Don't know about a bike spring though. Not worth the potential injuries in my book!
