Are these gears made out of tin foil? This is the second time my second gear has lost teeth.
Ok, first time I tried too many wheelies, but I don't bother with those any more. My gear changing is smooth - mostly :-)
Are aftermarket gear cogs any better?

Is it a 2001 model? The second gear on R1s and Fazers 2000/2001 were superseded by an uprated part. Poor undercutting on the dog, apparently. See "Replaced part number" here

make sure when you change 2nd you change 6th and the selector fork as well, had to do my R1 5PW ( same gear box).
Mark :)

If you follow the line back Yamaha suffered from the same problem on the xs1100. Second gear on them was very fragile on them and they didn't seem to correct it on the early 1000 boxes. Mine is 03 and seems ok but being a xs11 owner I never harsh change second...

It's a 2003 model, thanks will make sure I get 6th and selector done too.

The uprated 2nd gear (again) part number is 5JJ-17121-01 not 5JJ-17121-00 it was changed again in the later fazers

Me again, talk about procrastinating! I've been riding around mostly changing straight up to third to avoid second.
Just ordered the gears, but apparently there are three selector forks, so anyone know which one to replace?
