Hello Foccer's,
Thought it might be an idea to start a new "Near miss" thread.
Something for us all to take heed of and bear in mind when we're out riding, also an outlet to vent any frustration at the way people seem to want to kill you or even beat yourself up over a silly mistake that could have been more serious.
I'll start it off....
Been a funny old weekend for me, firstly, two boy racers made intentional dangerous manoeuvres towards me. One when I was parked up, then his companion following him who swerved out when I went for the overtake. None of the manoeuvres were life threatening, just bravado I believe.
Then today, whilst hitting my favourite local bends which are fast, wide and sweeping I saw a car in the middle of the road facing me wanting to turn right. Two other cars at the turning waiting to come out.
I always adjust my speed and cover my brakes when I encounter this sort of scenario but this time my sixth sense told me she was going to pull across my path.
Sure enough, she pulled across me, her attention concentrated on the cars waiting to pull out....I was already on the brakes and banging down the box when her husband visibly screamed at her and she stopped midway.
I could see everyone's face wincing as I came to a stop 2 metres from the passenger door.
They was apologetic and embarrassed while the other car drivers were shaking their heads.
It's funny as I was emotionless and totally unsurprised as I was expecting it.
What I want to take from this, if I hadn't adjusted my speed and expected it to happen, I doubt I could have stopped in time and seeing as she stopped mid manoeuvre, taking evasive action behind her might have ended in tears.
Stay safe out there Foccers, people predictably do unpredictable things. ;)

BMW cars.......just avoid the foccers like the plague. They are predictably unpredictable.
I could probably give you 6 stories a day to and from work and most would involve them.
-
Well done Dazza, always best to err on the side of caution when out on the road.
I always take the attitude that everyone is out to kill me and try to leave myself plenty of escape options ;)

Yep I will second that, and also any gold/orange or lime green colour car I think its some sort of law that all twats have to drive those colours to warn other road users
-
every day I get a twat in lane 1 of a roundabout who ends up turning right, I just get a 6th sense for it now so I'll hang back in lane 2 until they've crossed my path then give them the bull horn :lol
what really gripped my shit the other day was a woman in a cage pulling out of a side alley way from the rear of some shops, which disects a big pavement and onto a main road. I was walking the dog who was slightly ahead of me and rather than erring on extreme caution as you would when driving down an alley, she came out about 15mph.......don't sound much but it was far too fast for the scenario.....the dog shit himself and jumped back, I thought.....you foccing tw*t you nearly killed my dog (could easily have been a kid running ahead or on a scooter etc)
Was just about to bollock her when she took off onto the main road and disappeared.......I was furious and probably a good job she never stopped to hear my fury

Or at least Google maps screenshot with paint diagram :lol

If only I could've taken a photo this morning on the way to work.
2 BMW's, both black in colour, side by side right in front of me, and both pulled up waiting right on top of giant painted words on the road saying "KEEP CLEAR".
Arrogant bastards. :rolleyes

At least once a month i perform a practice emergency stop, hoping i will never have to do it for real.
Well on friday afternoon on the way home through a couple of mild twisties in a 50 doing about 50+ on a right hander no more than 50 meters ahead theres a fooking tractor and trailer entering the road from a blind entrance on the right. I know its there but for a couple of years I've not seen it being used so have been lolled into a false sense of security, thank f*ck i practice my emergency stops because i didn't have time to think i just did. Amazingly it was text book no skids stopped 10 meters from the large green thing and even remembered to check mirrors for other vehicles.
Took 30 seconds to restore my breathing to a clamer level.

-Yep on my guard as soon as I spot the rings!
Not just me then ---- is that why the logo is the way it is so that you can see the twats approaching in your mirror ( looks the same in reverse )
-
Had a near miss today when a tractor pulled out in front of us, one of those crop spraying ones with the arms folded in, now he either didn't look or thought f**k 'em, I was number 3 of 5 and it was close god only knows how the first two stopped. How can someone not see 5 headlights and 5 bikes?
-
There was a truck with a large keep right sign on the back of it in front of me up ahead, so in static traffic at lights I indicated and moved between two cars on my right side.
The driver behind me loudly honked the horn at me, so a bit bemused I looked around and a woman was waving her left hand at me while her right hand had her phone to her ear!
When we got moving she decided to literally sit about 3 feet from the back of my bike for about a quarter of a mile then quite aggressively weaved in and out behind me around a roundabout!!!
Luckily I kept my cool and also kept my speed the same so the arrogant twat wouldn't speed up then forget to brake through sheer anger. And fortunately my years of road experience paid dividends.
But I would just like to say..........what a complete and utter cnut she was.

If she was in training to become a BMW driver then I apologise.........nice work. :lol

Today Twyford T-junction I was coming from train station and have stopped and (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.475841,-0.860873,3a,75y,69.08h,62.14t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s2rxZxuySF5zgLjcXiyuSmQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1) looking right to do left turn and join the main road. It was clear but there is hidden bend 100 yards on the right. When I decided to go some Honda popped up on speed from the bend. I have stopped and let him go but it was almost SMIDSY me in the sorry mate part :eek

It is hard to see bikes and after you see it is hard to figure out the speed.
Fact. If that can happen to me imagine what wouldwould be for a guy who drives car only.

It wasnt you that didnt see him as he wasnt there, it was his mistake for going too fast and not reading road signs warning of a side road after a bend.
When I know the road and am in your situation when it is clear as was for you I make sure that i get a move on and am away

And have you noticed that NOBODY is ever wrong??
Yesterday I watched a merc driver approach the T junction on the left ahead of me. I thought, he hasn't looked. Sure enough he pulled straight out in front of me.
When I stopped about a foot from his door and told him to FOCCIN USE HIS EYES his first reaction was to tell me to slow down!!!!
I thought well it won't make much difference if you dont look.
BTW this was in Tesco's car park and I was doing maybe 15 mph.

Should have sorry instead of accusing you of going fast.
However I know why he has said you are going fast. Because he misjudged your speed. It was looking to him as you were going with say 5 miles. He was wrong and that make him angry to you. Obviously you are angry to him.
Here is why SMIDSY happen at all:
There is a very simple reason for this. A typical projected frontal area for motorcycles is in the neighborhood of 2.9–3.9 sq ft (0.27–0.36 m2). The car and truck are 10 to 20 times bigger!
It is scientifically proven that human brain perception of moving object depends on how big is the object, the color and the speed.
https://rideapart.com/articles/motorcycle-accidents-brain-blame
Delucia's research found that smaller objects are typically perceived by the viewer to be farther away than larger objects at the same distance. Because motorcycles are much smaller than cars, this perception error may interfere with a driver's ability to accurately judge the distance of an oncoming motorcycle, particularly when the driver is about to make a left turn.
IMO the reason why bikers do less SMIDSY on the side of the sorry guy is at least for me, not that I am better than most of the car drivers, the reason is from my experience intuitively when I see the bike coming with priority just stop without trying to judge the speed.
-
Also, the brain is very poor at judging the speed of a vehicle (or anything really) coming straight towards us.

Not as bad as that dumb fuckwit with a big fuck off lorry coming towards him in that video.
"Whoah, whoah, whoah........oh there goes my bike."
It would be interesting seeing him in a boxing ring.
"Here comes a punch, HERE COMES A PUNCH, WHOAH , HERE IT..........OUCH." :rollin

Not really a near miss as I hit it :eek but was out today on the DRZ with my brother and whilst riding round the country lanes I rode very close to the edge of the road on a bend to use the start of the verge as a berm when I felt a horrendous impact to my shin.
I pulled up in agony wondering if I had broken any bones. After I had composed myself and realised nothing was broken, I went back to see what I had hit.
Coming from the opposite direction it was immediately obvious but from the other side it was perfectly camouflaged with ivy.
A foccing great tree trunk that didn't budge when I hit it. A good job I was wearing boots as it hit me right on the reinforced shin area.
Tree trunk chucked further into the verge to prevent other dicks riders doing the same. :D
Think it's going to hurt tomorrow. :\

One of the advantages of this time of year is the number of drivers with their windows wound down. Means you can pull up alongside and give them some 'specific advice'. Especially if they are on their phone. Particularly effective if you have a dark visor and a loud exhaust. :D

All the science stuff about smidsys is very interesting but not really relevent when they simply dont foccing look. :eek .

Agree or if they are looking at their smartphone only I mean the amount of people texting with one hand is unbeleivable :wall

I do like pulling up next to a driver on their phone, window down with me reving the nuts off the bike. They normally get the message..... :lol

Had my first close call yesterday. Ive only been riding for a week or two at this stage. Its wild out there. :)

It's Slough. What do you expect ?

Three simple rules to remember:
1) Don't assume they've seen you.
2) Don't assume they'll respect you right of way.
3) Do assume they'll do something stupid.
On a roundabout like that I *always* expect someone to try to pull out, so I automatically cover the horn button and I'm prepared to make a sharp evasive manoeuvre to the right (I've already checked there's nothing inside me, of course!)
I'm watching to see if they're looking at me and checking if their wheels are still rotating (or starting to) and judging their speed if they're just approaching the Give Way line to see if they're slowing down or will be able to stop before I reach the point at which we could collide.
If I'm not sure, a quick toot-toot on the horn will get their attention (followed by a friendly "thank you" wave to avoid a Tarmac Tantrum)
Next time you'll be ready for it :thumbup

My thoughts entirely and that roundabout off the M4 is always a black spot - no license holders around there fella.
-
Preventing near misses is the way forward.
As has been said, expect the unexpected and never assume the driver has seen you. I think road positioning is vital to staying safe. I look for many indications when approaching a junction, what road side furniture can I be hidden by, what vehicles are behind me, where am I in relation to their headlights (in the dark my light may be seen as one of the cars further behind me) is the sun blinding them (especially dangerous if its behind you and your lights are on) Etc etc. But for me the most important part of defensive riding is can I see his or her eyes. Simple really, if you cant see them, assume they cant see you. No matter how many times they turn their heads if you are hidden behind the A-pillar you don't exist. So I try to see the road from their perspective, move to a position where I give them the best chance of seeing me, its not perfect although it definitely helps prevent those heart stopping moments.
A couple of years ago a local lad on a Blade was killed when a driver pulled out in front of him. I didn't know him but a lad I worked with did. I asked him what happened and he said that this new driver pulled straight out of a junction. The rider was going so fast he just about cut the car in half. he was killed instantly and left this young woman with a broken neck. Sure she shouldn't have pulled out but I doubt there would be many drivers who wouldn't have made the same mistake. Sometimes, no matter how you look at it, we are in the wrong. Just not nice admitting it.

I suppose this one counts as a near miss. Certainly wasn't expecting this today.

Yeah that was a pretty close one dazza! :eek. 10/10 for your reaction time to that situ tho ;). Like to think so, but not sure if I would have been able to pull up that quick!.

Hey Dazza that was close :eek
Good position and all handling 10/10 :thumbup

Good job you were able to stop in the distance you could see was clear on your side of the road.

I take it that was a home made no vehicles sign put there by residents not understanding what a green lane is........
As long as it's on an OS map as a byway, nothing they can do!

ofcourse we all no Dazza wouldn't go anywhere he isn't supposed to ;)

It was on all sides of the road. When will these people learn and make lorries narrower :rolleyes

A16 'smornin'
3 vans in a row, each pulling a caravan. Thinks "as soon as we come off the roundabout, I'll do all three along the dotted line". There's a lot of oncoming traffic, but the road is very wide and straight as a die here - just coming out of Boston.
Car behind the 3 vans pulls left to give me more space - I overtake the first van and caravan, loadsa room. Couple of feet behind the second, still on the centreline and accelerating, and the bastid swerves across in front of me (traffic still oncoming from opposite direction).
I know you always think about not slapping the anchor down too hard - I've already had to change my grids after a close call with a truck in similar circumstances, when I locked up both wheels, but I thought I was going to make it and started thinking about releasing the pressure when the rear suddenly locks up and I'm all over the shop. I kept it sunny side up tho.
He then swerved back over left again (probs texting on his mobile) but had I not reacted well enough that would have been too little too late.
Once I'd got back into not wanting to throttle the git mentality I just overtook as previously intended, without so much as a glance across. Didn't want to give him the satisfaction, in case he'd done it deliberately (yes, the plonker drivers around here often do things like that and think its funny). I can't think of any other possible reason that the guy would pull across in those circumstances - mobile (or similar) or being a cunny funt.
When I got home I found my helmet flip-up cable was bust! That made my day - another 100 squids out the window as well as a new pair of grids!

For the bike to go apeshit you must've have pulled the clutch in as well?

Good spot Harry. official sign but restricting vehicle movements in the winter months only, probably to preserve the lane.
-

Not consciously, no :lol
I think it was just braking hard with the fronts will have lifted the weight off the rear a bit and I always make sure my rears are working well, so I'm guessing I was stepping on the pedal a little harder than I realised.
Actually, bike awareness has improved noticably over the last few years around here - it's the other lot that always seem to find me! :b
Nah, it could be a lot worse.
-
Providing you know you can stop this one freaks them out
Get on the brakes and slow down so you can stop dead when you need to, aim straight for the driver and stop just before hitting the door. They can't judge your speed as they're so focused on you, not your surroundings.
You should see the colour drain out of their face.
Bet they think twice at the next junction
:lol

I am not as good as you on the brakes and that would have been one van less his right hand side mirror. Just to be on the safe side :lol

I had a car pull of his driveway in front of me, I hit the drivers side wing, my head hit the bonnet, I must have summer salted and landed on my back in the other lane, a coach was coming slammed his brakes on, I woke up just looking at the driver, :eek
