I'm going to be based near Craven Arms in Shropshire for 2 nights at the end of the month and was hoping for some ideas for routes that would take in good roads and scenery in the Shropshire / Wales vicinity, any and all suggestions welcome.

Hi Pie,
Church Stretton to Asterton (Longmynd) via Burway Road/ Bur Way and the Port Way is single track and very scenic. Google it to research afore ye go. Takes you past the Midland Gliding club which on a good day makes for interesting viewing along with the nutters who throw themselves off the steep hill nearby on those big flying upside down hammocks.
Not a scratching route by any means, but very worthy of a visit certainly.
Before you start the run, it's worth calling into Carding mill Valley park. A dead end and quite touristy with facilities, but is once again seen from atop of Bur Way when you're riding toward Asterton from Church Stretton.
Once you get to Asterton down the steep hill from the Longmynd, make your own route up back home. Mine usually involves back up north toward Oswestry, Ellesmere and Whitchurch, but that's going away from your base at Craven arms.
Enjoy mate and let us know if you have a dekko.

I am just down the road 10 miles,, loads of good small A roads around,,one up to Iron Bridge, one through CLun to Knighton, very twisty stuff everywhere. I am away 25th 26th July but any other day ,evenings give me a call for a ride out.SLim

Thanks guys;
Septik - Is a Dekko some kind of local delicacy that we should be keeping an eye out for?
Slim - I have sent you a PM.

:lol A PieEater from Melton Mowbray (lovely pork pies) only thinking of his belly eh?
Dekko is 'Scouse' for 'having a look' and not at all edible.
Though there is a café within Carding Mill valley (National Trust) which was quite nice for a bit of scran.
Well worth a dekko lar!

:eek I wasn't expecting to learn to speak foreign on this trip, at least not this side of Wales, hope the old trick of speaking very loudly and slowly with lots of gestures will get us by.

I think it's the A489 from Newtown to the A49 nr. Craven Arms that I like. If I'm thinking the right road, it's a cracker.
In fact, this loop for a short-ish ride would be good:

(Sorry, forgot how to shorten the link :o ).
Café at Crossgates welcomes bikes. If you want longer, more or less anywhere west of that loop well worth a look; Rhayader, Elan valley etc. A44 out to Aberystwyth is brilliant, fishies and chippies at the seaside :)
-
Hi Nick,,i have offered to take a day off work and be a guide,,suggested the route I took with Dazza,,,Dazza are you there ?stand on a box then I can see you :lol
Up to Knighton,Penybont,Crossgates coffee cake,Newtown via the recently cut hedge(hmmm Nick :lol :evil) ,then onto a44 continue to Aberystwth coffee, meet Noggy :lol,,chips down at Abeaeron,,back through Tregaron to Llandovery,,more coffee, cakes,Builth A44 back to Leominster,,a bloody amazing couple of hundred miles.
Anyone else want a day off ?????? :lol
-
Down the A49 from the arms turn left at Wofferton and head on the A456 toward Tenbury Wells, keep going on the A456 to Kiddeminster, then A442 to Bridgenorth > A458 toward Morville > B4368 back toward the Arms.......all cracking roads if the weathers good.
Ride safe bud :D
-
Thanks guys, really looking forward to a day out with Slim on the Tuesday (30th June) we've still got the Monday afternoon / evening & Wednesday morning to take in some more riding & scenery, so some of the shorter routes look ideal. Just hoping the weather holds out for us.
-
OK, how about meet a the Ludlow food center car park, 2 miles north of Ludlow on A49, 3 miles south of Craven arms on A49
-
Great, what time do you want us there?
-
Oh my god, they have forecast 26 degrees all day in Wales :D .
Careful choice of clothing to keep cool while riding
Say 9.30 am at the food center car park

Well a day from heaven fell on us today, what a beauty,, our tyres were glued to the hot tarmac, many tea, water ,chip stops along the way.
A great group of four riders weaving their way through the Welsh tree lined valleys and over rolling mountains with wonderous views collecting flies as we thundered on our way. :lol
-
I wore my 70s porno sunglasses :lol
I met mr Pieeater, a very nice chap and he sure can handle the blue gen1, I think he enjoyed the roads :D
also along came his mate on a yam 1700 custom, complete with R1 forks and other mods,,hell he had to hang on,,not quite keeping up with us but he gave his tyres hell,,haha, they got hot, no chicken strips on any of them bikes now :lol
-
Home safe, excellent day, 370 miles covered and not too sore :lol
Nice to meet PieEater and friend - I'll never look at cruisers in the same way again :eek
-
Along came my old mate Nick, I knew he would not miss an opportunity to shed some rubber on them roads,, I slowed down on the Newtown road where he fell off and pointed it out to the others :lol :lol :lol :lol much to Nick's embaressment :lol :lol :lol :lol
-
Great Nick, good day out, you made good time too,
-
Roll up for slimwilly's "sites of carnage" guided tours! :rolleyes :lol
Had a couple of brief stops, but roads were nearly empty on the way home :)
-

So get yourself one. It's what bank loans are for :rollin
-
And it's because of talk like that, that I currently have my Gen 1... and many many... many credit cards :evil
-
Back home now after just under 700 miles in 3 days, my arse is sore but the trip was well worth it.
I can't thank Slim & Nick sufficiently for their generosity in taking a full day out for what I have christened "Crisp Willy Eater's grand Welsh day out featuring Andy" or "It weren't araf hot Mum"
The weather was beautiful
The scenery was beautiful
The roads were beautiful
The company was beautiful rugged
Wales more than lived up to the hype as biking paradise, the route Slim picked had the best stretches of Tarmac I've ever ridden, just fantastic.
Things went a little bit awry when we played "Spot the Willy"

Beautiful photos PieEater. Er, well, mostly. I'm sure they'll give you much pleasure when you browse through them at an idle moment :lol
Glad you enjoyed it, but you don't need the company for that, although that can be a bonus :lol. Just a good bike, which you have of course, and good weather. We looked at mostly A road stuff yesterday, but if you ever get the chance to go back, have a look at some of the smaller mountain roads too. A different kind of riding, and the scenery is even better. You can easily spend a week or two exploring the area, and still want to go back for more. Let me know if you do decide to go again, and I can recommend many more routes :)
-
I am glad you enjoyed it Mr PieEater, a fantastic day out, my bum is back to normal now :lol :lol :lol
Thanks for the excuse to take a day off,,did Andy get his visiting done?
-
Hi Slim - Yes Andy made it up to see his relatives with a slight unintentional detour, Nick was pretty spot on with his timing too at three and a half hours.
-
I like that last pic through the grass......like a herd of bison at the watering hole
If only someone had parked the red yin in unison it woulda been better......possibly a reason for it being kept away from the grass :b
