Think i'll grab some of those - its £3.49 so hardly a financial crisis if they dont turn out right. Very nice mod :)

If I get a chance, i'll try and document how I do it though it seems fairly straight forward as described by craigybee404

Right, just in case anyone is curious about how to do it etc, this is what I did. Took me about 20-25 minutes but thats because I made a couple of mistakes. First of all I replaced the low fuel indicator which ideally I shouldn't have done - i've put the original bulb back but have to wait to see if i've got it in the right way (read on). Second, I dropped a washer and then couldn't find it ;) I am by no means an electrician or mechanic so skill required on a scale of 1 (low) and 10 (high) is practically 1.

Disclaimer:
If you break yourself, your bike, your pet, any family member or other object its your own fault and is not any responsibility of mine. You are liable for anything you do or do not do.
Credit goes to craigybee404 for his original modification.

You will require:
1x Philips Screw Driver (I used a PZ1 bit in my multi-purpose driver)
1x 10mm Ring Spanner
1x 10mm Socket (1/4" Drive) (Optional but damn handy for getting one of the bolts off)
3x 286 T5 Dashboard LEDs (Sourced these from eBay - £3.49 for 10)

(I thought I needed 4 LEDs but it turnt out that one of them is the low fuel indicator)

I have a Red fazer (with a Silver tank) but opted for Blue LEDs because ive limited success with Red LEDs in my computer ;)

1. First thing I'd recommend is to disconnect the battery underneath the seat before continuing (I didn't but I have to cover all bases)

2. Behind the instrument panel there are 3x 10mm bolts with washers that hold the dials to the frame. These need to be removed taking care not to lose any (I managed to drop one of the washers somewhere when reassembling and couldn't find it). Keep them somewhere safe in a little pot or dish, if you don't they are bound to roll off somewhere...

(This image was taken from the left of the bike - the side with the clutch lever)

The top one was a pain to get to so if you have a Socket set that can reach it I would recommend it - I used a 10mm Socket with a 1/4" drive.

3. Behind the dials is a connector which feeds all the information to dials - this can be simply disconnected with by pushing in a pin on the connector and pulling it free (mine was quite tight however)

(The connector is underneath the rubber sheath at the top of this picture - it also shows the 7x Screws that need to be removed next)

4. Remove all the screws using your screw driver and keep them somewhere safe with the bolts and washers.

5. The back cover and internal board should all come apart easily (there arent any clips) and reveal 4x bulbs. 3x of the bulbs are for the backlight of the dials, the other is the low fuel indicator - you can replaced this if you wish but its not easy to test if its working unless you happen to have no fuel in your bike :P

(The dials seperated into there 3 segments. The middle is the board showing the 4x bulbs - these are the black plastic bits that have a gold dot in the middle (at least in this picture). The top most one in this photo is for the low fuel indicator - once I figured this out I kept the original bulb in place but I have to wait to see if i've got it in the right way - more on this in a second).

(Close up of the back of the dials - top right bulb is low fuel indicator)

6. The black plastic bits (I have no proper name for them :P) twist free and pull out of the PCB. The existing bulbs can then be pulled out. They are in pretty tight but you can pull them free with your hands, I wouldn't recommend using any tools to do this in case you break them and need to put them back in the future. Once free, grab one of your new bulbs and put it in then twist the black plastic bit back in to the PCB.

(From left to right: Plastic bit that holds the bulbs, old bulb, new bulb)

7. For safety reasons, reassemble the casing, plug the connector from the dash back in to the dials, reconnect the battery and turn on the ignition (with either side lights or dipped beam on) and test if the bulbs are working. (The easier but non-recommended option is to just connect the PCB back to the connector and test that way). If any of the lights aren't functioning its because the polarity is incorrect.

8. For any non-function bulbs, twist the black plastic casing of the bulb, remove and make a 180 degree turn and reinsert and tighten. Basically we are just changing the contacts to the PCB. I had 2 of 3 bulbs not working initially so had to do this.

9. Test bulbs again - if a bulb doesnt work then that bulb is probably broken or isnt seated correctly. Hopefully this wont happen to you...

10. Reassembly is a reverse of disassembly. For the bolts holding the dials to the bike, I found it easiest to try and get the washer and bolt on from the top of the dial instead of from underneath. The left and right bolts are simple enough.

Hopefully that covers all bases and the results are below. My LCD doesnt seem to have been as adversely affected as craigybee404's but that is possibly because I had slightly dimmer bulbs - they are by no means dull and provide more than enough light.

Full size (8 MegaPixel) larger versions of these images are also online and available at http://www.imperial-empire-se.com/images/foc-u (http://www.imperial-empire-se.com/images/foc-u) (old domain as my other one is having issues).

Since I have 7 spare bulbs, if anyone is in Bristol and wants them (and a hand fitting them) then you are more than welcome to PM me.

Edit: Btw, my indicators and other lights on the bottom row do still work, I just put the bike in to first so that the glare from the green Neutral light didnt effect the photo :P

I'm surprised the single LEDs used don't give colour hotspots on the display, I know when I tried it with the XS11 they did and it looked awful. These seem to have worked really well and look great.

Just did mine today as I had some of those bulbs lying around from an old project that I never ended up using. Really easy to fit and they're colour changers too! They go from green to blue to purple in a slow gradual fade and look spot-on!  :)

Zombie!!!
Ordered my led's and hope to be doing the mod at the weekend. Advice please! Clock currently steams a little once warmed up - is there a sealant I can use prevent this once I've finished, or is that just going to create more issues down the line? What about greasing around the seals? (haven't investigated the clocks yet...)

Thanks

Did a similar thing to both my old R1 streetfighter, and my old Fazer 600 using stick on led strips and tedious soldering pretty much before these bulbs were available.
This way looks a hell of a lot easier and more efficient! 8)  Might  have a go at my FZ1 clocks now........

I'd guess the seals are probably fine just try to reassemble the clocks in a dry environment to reduce the humidity that gets locked inside.

I did this too, although I went for white bulbs behind the clocks to brighten it up rather than change the colour.

I'm guessing I got cheap bulbs as they all stopped working within a month and I had to go back to the original bulbs.  :'(

I'm goin to be doing this as well  :lol soon be able to tell the foccers by the colour of their clocks ! I suppose it will be easier with the fairing off, so I'll probably do it when I get the fairing painted in a few weeks.

Did this recently, great little upgrade. Used white leds from ebay - actually they were the version with 3x SMDs per bulb. Brightened up the clocks nicely.

In an effort to prevent fogging, I smeared fairy liquid onto the inside of the clocks lenses before leaving them to dry for a bit and buffing them up. I also stuck one of those oxygen absorber packet thingies in there. Fogging has not been back since.

Post by: Dead Eye on 16 January 2013, 08:42:25 pm
That's actually a good idea - the moisture absorber things :D You could easily hide several of those behind the clocks and never know they are there.

@Stedman8 - How much is the cost of having your fairing painted? Just curious as this may be something I'll investigate
Title: Re: what u think guys n gals
Post by: Stedman8 on 17 January 2013, 10:26:21 am
The guy I'm going to is putting a black with gold flecks stripe on the tank continuing to the fairing and the grab rail as well for £110 and I'm going to see if will do the middle of the rear fairing if you know what I mean - its not a full repaint but if you wanted the full fairing painted I cant see it being too much different possibly a bit cheaper- I'll put some pics up when I've had it done sometime late Feb early march.

Arent they white bulbs shining through coloured plastic - if I'm right ( which I'm frequently not ) wouldn't you just change the plastic bit to whatever colour you wanted

Not a fan of blue lighs personally. Maybe it's my eyes, but I find them difficult to look at at night.

When my local chavs went through the phase of putting those blue uv lights on their Corsas, Saxos, Evos, Subarus or whatever pikiemobiles they had it was absolutely miserable driving at night.

I've done the full set of warning lights too, but I'm considering changing the full beam light back though.  The new bulb is just too bright and distracting, at a time when you want to see the road better.

It is a bit glarish i agree but the green fuel light is ok. Provided uv not got full beam on its ok. I use an ultimate addons iphone case/clamp and when i indicate or watever and the light come on the case stops the glare.

Hi I would prefer to get the slightly dimmer blue bulbs so I can read the lcd so how do you know which brightness you will get bwhen you order them do you have an ebay number for the bulbs you got thanks :)

any t5 286 1.2w will be ok. the brightness u will get will be the same but remember blue is harder to see than white so there always gonna be less bright. the stems that the led is built around is longer so less light permeates round the speedo display and as they r closer to the turn signal/main beam plastic covers they will glare.

Seeing as my bike is Red, and there aren't any pictures up yet; I'll order some LEDS in, and change mine to red. I'll post some pictures up when I'm done to see how it is!

Hey everyone, Just done this mod today with blue LED's as i've got a blue foxeye 600. Very easy, Looks great, and took me about 45 minutes as I spent half the time cleaning the fairing brackets and typically I had put all the bulbs in the wrong way around.. hahaha. Always hated the standard lights for the dials. I won't bother with a picture as you all know what it looks like  :)

A huge thanks to dead eye for the very helpful pictures and descriptions on what to do. I removed the screen and have no idea why you wouldn't to do this mod as it makes access to the nuts so much easier. I also replaced the nuts and washers with stainless ones as they were a bit corroded. Was a good chance to get all the fairing brackets cleaned up too  :D

Did the mod today all went fine went to use my bike and the rev counter has stoped working. The needle has gone right round to far to the bottom. Looks like the clocks have to come off again  :(

I bought some SMDs but with the ones I got, each bulb had three sides and so the light spread more evenly across the dials. Bought white ones and they're much brighter.

something like this should do the trick. I put "T5 smd" into ebay and a few of them came up.

Is it just me, or is the life expectancy on these bulbs crap?

I changed mine to white single bulb ones, and all three died within a couple of months.

Changed to some 3-bulb ones, and one has already given up the ghost after 2 weeks.

I wouldn't mind so much if they were quicker to change.

Haven't had an issue with any dying on me but I'm rather thankful for how easy they are to change. On my old Mk2 Golf you had to disassemble the entire dashboard just to try and even get the clocks out. You would then spend the next 6 hours trying to reattach the tacho and speed sensors to the back of the clocks whilst attempting to get them to sit in the right bloody place...

In a previous project I converted all dash lights on a Mazda MX5  and I had issues with leds blowing from the cheaper versions on ebay. After a bit or trial and error I have found the seller Goodwill sales supplies the best quality leds.
I have fitted red, blue, green and yellow in various cars over the years :)
