Title: Fire!!!
Post by: anutz on 29 May 2015, 10:17:20 am
So no fire, just recently i aquired some old fire extinguishers....and i wandered does any one else have one handy in case their DIY on their bikes takes a turn for the worse?

I have never had major issues, but once i did have some fuel spill on a hot engine - my own fault, nothing went up, but had it then i may have wished i had an extinguisher...

Deadeye is our resident firestarter :evil :evil :evil

But i think he'd need his own appliance :lol

It's a good idea though i reckon.

i never considered it until a friend at work said on the phone "do you want these spare extinguishers...", i asked why, and he said just in case....

So i have one now....and it does seem like a sensible idea

Ive been pissing about and then go to start the bike up in the garden and think to myself.......dont go on fire :lol .......if it did it would be in my back garden quite close to the house and if the fire itself didnt reach the house the smoke would probably still gut it.

I remember as a teenager, one of the local young chavs had just bought a vauxhall cavalier sri 130........for £80.........& then tried fitting his £200 stereo to it.........next thing there was an inferno.......the ammount of smoke was stupendous, looked like more than just a car............so the lad knows my dad is a fireman & comes rushing to the door screaming "my cars on fire what should i do"............"Phone the foccing fire brigade you tit" my dad says :lol

It's good fun but expensive to get setup. If you want to work on cars and bikes you really need a tig welder which means getting shielding gas as well as the welder itself, also filler rods, tips, helmet, gloves etc. You could probably spot weld sheet metal with a mig but they're too hot to be doing beads and so are arc welders.

might be one for next year - i still need to get mine through its MOT on the 12th and then ride it some this year, then change the engine in winter as long as i finish sorting the spare one i have in bits at the moment, so enuff to mess with for now...... :lol

I have two extinquishers in the workshop and one in the kitchen along with a fire blanket. Also smoke detectors all over the house and a carbon monoxide detector in the lounge. Am I being paranoid    :\ .
Apart from setting one of the smoke alarms off when I do some cooking I've never had to use any of the extinquishers.
Years ago when marshalling at a race meeting I thought it was a good idea to give a large fire extinguisher a little test. Embarrassingly I then couldn't stop it and ended up stuffing the nozzle into a straw bail and watched foam coming out in all directions.

Just one thing, make sure you get or use the correct extinguisher for the type of fire, dowsing a petrol fire with water can have an unexpected reaction, better off with foam or CO2.

This is useful - http://www.firesafe.org.uk/types-use-and-colours-of-portable-fire-extinguishers/ (http://www.firesafe.org.uk/types-use-and-colours-of-portable-fire-extinguishers/)

:thumbup

Very wise words indeed :-)

:thumbdown

Reminds me of various stories involving flammable materials and wrong extinguisher :(

I deliver gas cylinders for said welding companies and the like. We're always getting asked questions from those very nice people at VOSA ;) ;) and even customers regarding what steps we would take in a fire situation, my response is....foccin large ones and make sure I'm faster than the slowest guy :rollin

(I do think they're actually looking for me to say I'd get the fire extinguishers and put it out to stop any danger to anyone) :rolleyes

It doesn't make any difference if you are faster than the slowest guy if you're still slower than the fire!

Here is what i was given...i will read up on it later but based on what it say i.e. safe on all fires, execpt the aformentioned, its at least something to have around if a little something starts - of course i would only dare put out a little fire i am not a fire man and know when its time to call the professionals...but thats each persons own call - i certainlly feel happier having it...but i still wheel the bike into the middle of the garden to crank it over when i have been really fiddiling!

You'll be just fine with that anutz, it's a powder inside it and will do most fires, fuel, electrical etc that are ever going to come about in your garage working on your bike.

Wee point to note though.
Put it where you can get to it as your running from a fire, ie near the main door of your garage :) otherwise your between the fire and escape route if anything bad was to happen.

Hopefully you won't need it but better to have it in the right place if you have one at all :-)
All you need now is to figure out how you'd use it if needed, it's not just a matter of 'pointing and shooting'
That'll give you something else to read up on :lol

holey moley.....WTF happened there? :'(

Do you know what caused it.....
Title: Re: Fire!!!
Post by: Dead Eye on 01 June 2015, 11:06:41 am
Fire happened  :evil :evil :evil

The cause is a long story and ultimately I argue it was never confirmed... but I basically did something stupid, left it for a while and came back to smoke pouring out of the garage...

Ultimately, the garage collapsed and was rebuilt - this happened 5 days after I moved in as a tenant back in 2012... I don't live there anymore :P

I had a cb750 outfit that set it's carbs on fire in my garage while I was sat astride it. Managed to beat the flames out before my nuts got roasted and sold it the next week.

Make sure they are not too old, power extinguisher have around 10 years lifespan.

I have one in the car and one in the kitchen, probably would be good idea to get one for the garage too  :lol
