So, Foccer's,
After a little input of your collective opinions, knowledge and experience.
Had a little unexpected windfall. A PPI claim that was rejected in 2012, suddenly out of the blue was re-investigated and awarded in my favour.
Something I learned that disgusted me, was that 20% of my compensation was deducted at source for the Taxman. :eek Bastards.
Anyway, I digress. I have put aside £1500-£2500 for a second bike but can't make up my mind and would like some input from you.
My list so far is...
Busa, early unrestricted model
R1, early carbed model
XT 660 R or X
WR 250-450
KTM EXC 250-450
DRZ 400
Jap 80's strokers
RD 350 YPVS
TDR 250
TZR 250
RG 250
You see my dilemma ? :lol At the moment I am leaning more towards an XT 660 R
What would you Foccer's go for or is there something else you would throw into the mix ? :)

Personally I'd be looking at a blade, r1, zx9 or maybe a gsxr 1000, as late a model as you can find in budget!

xt660 are shite apparently Dazza.....I have pulled that from my archives from all the countless pondering over various bikes and the feedback I've had.

I've just picked up a cheap gen 1, and its great. But not as good as my carb'd R1 for playing, especially with flat bar conversion.
Get a carb'd R1 quick before the prices shoot up. They're heading that way rapidly!

JoeRock, have thought about the sportsbike route but lets be honest in the real world, there's not a great deal of difference between them and a full monty'd Fazer. The only reason I have included an early carb'd R1 is that it's going to hold it's money and a nice one probably go up in value. Stevie, just what I have been thinking actually.

If you already own a gen 1 1000, then in my opinion you've definitely got the right idea for going for something completely different like a single cylinder supermoto. Just not the XT, they have horrible fuelling issues and are too heavy. The fuelling can be fixed with quite simple mods, but it is never fully cured and smooth like the carbs on your gen 1. For that money, I would go older and carbed. Something light and grunty, such as a honda XR 600/650 (600 usually cheaper, don't always have indicators or electric start though), an MZ baghira, KTM LC4 640, Husqvarna 610 sm, Kawasaki KLX 650 or my personal favorite the CCM 604 or 644 dual sport / R30 depending which you like the look of more. CCM is where I would be putting my money, fair few about as well. Good luck!

I suppose the question you need to ask yourself is what do you want a second bike to do? Once you've figured that for certain, then look at bike models.

Aswell as the Fazer, I've got the '98 Carbed Tiger 900 (885 not 855i) which i absolutely love riding - a totally different experience to the Fazer.
It's a keeper and is rising in value. It will also lose most bikes through the twisties.

I recently bought myself a versys 650 with 7000 miles that is in your price range. Mine had an issue with the reg/rect after i bought it, but sorted it for £47.. It has a really punchy motor and gets great reviews. Upside down forks, average brakes, great handling.. Just a thought i would put another option out there.. And no i'm not selling mine! Yet....... :)

80's strokers are starting to get silly in terms of price, a good one now will only go up in value but the trick will be finding a good one that doesn't need lots doing. Early 'Blades might be worth a look for sportsbike type thing, or maybe a good Transalp.

If you want something cheap to go fast on, '99 GSXR750SRAD or the Y or K1. I had a '98 Blade for 9 years (Ti Akra, Maxton front and rear, etc) and it never felt as good as my SRAD, i would take anyone on with that thing, and regularly did, and almost always came out on top. Its a 4 stroke 2 stroke, great fun.
But you have already got a decent bike in the Fazer, so I'd go for something different. Since I started riding sportsbikes 30 odd years ago that's all I had, but with the anti-speed attitude nowadays I have had to turn away from bikes that are only good at one thing i.e. going very fast. That's why I bought a Fazer (capable of going very fast, but nice to ride when you are only going at 5/10ths), but I also have a VN800, very good little bikes, relatively cheap, and a different kind of enjoyment from riding it around, nice to bugger around with too, and there are so many of them, second hand goodies are quite cheap. You don't have to dress it up like a tarts boudoir, teach yourself to paint and take all the bits off you don't want, and you'll have something individual to you. The best thing is that you can transform it into something different quite cheaply every winter if you want to. The good bit is, you will always get your money back on your investment.
The bubble has got to burst with 80's/90's Strokers pretty soon, the prices are ridiculous and they can be real money pits.
R1's are very good sportsbikes, but not that different from a Fazer with some mods and a decent rider on board.
Supermotos are great around town and on country lanes, but the TDR250 I had in '96 had to go, I was a real menace to other road users on it, I just couldn't help myself, it was only fun when you pushed it hard, over roundabouts on the back wheel, through bus stops, using drop kerbs as ramps, baiting ANY other riders on anything, it had to go, I was safer on something that would do 170mph!

get yourself a greenlaner and go have some fun. loads of green lanes near us Dazza.
If I had the money the bike I would love to have next to the Fazer is a gixer 750, always loved them, always lusted after one. But I do fancy a go at that green laning business, my friend goes out a lot and loves it.
saying that, Baron Von Grumble did green lanes on his gixer (youtube it).

Harry, my intentions was to get a greenlaner. My ideal solution is something light enough to throw around and pick up easily when I fall off, robust enough so as not to damage it too much when I fall off. Possibly with a set of supermoto wheels and tyres that I can change to and zip round the twisty's. This has got to be narrowing it down a bit, wouldn't you say ?

This is one of my greenlane friend's bikes, he did exactly what you said, knobblys for lanes and spare wheels with road tyres. He uses it for twos up green laning with the missus too!! :-)
He got the bug and also has purely offroad bikes too but still uses this one :-)

Exactly what I've been looking at Harry. Saw a nice looking Duke in High Wickham, just not sure about that front end headlight set up. Now, who do we know who lives near High Wickham who could give it a nosey for me? :lol

For the kind of money you're talking about, a decent KTM (reliable/un-trashed) is probably out of the picture.
What about a DRZ400 (trail or Supermoto with just a swap of wheels) - or if you want something simpler, as well as lighter and less "damageable" how about one of these (Honda CRF 230). We've had both and loved them both (both on and off-road). Your budget should get you a very nice one of either.

Given you already have one of the best Japanese inline 4's :D I would go for something with a V-twin..
I have been looking at weekend toys for ages. I keep coming back to the aprilia tuono. Will probably keep its value fairly well and that thumping twin will put a grin on your face.
I also have a taste for the XJR1300... love that retro muscle bike look. B-King is another option.. not many were made or sold so again could be a good investment.

I think the tuono is a great choice fuzzbom. I had a falco, which has a similar v twin rotax engine and i loved it. Loads of character and great handling.
