Title: What bikes do you have in your garage?
Post by: nickodemon on 09 March 2015, 09:50:49 pm
I thought i would start a post to see what bikes you guys have in your garage... I know this is a Fazer forum, but we all appreciate looking at other bikes that we own or have owned and regretted selling. Post with pics if you have them.... No lawnmowers :lol

Yeah, just put a deposit down on a gen 1 this afternoon before I got the message. Albeit this one is ivanised with an upgraded shock too. ;)

Ivanised is the way to go... I sold a gen 1 to my mate a couple of years ago with 110'000 miles on the clock. I'm gutted i sold it to him because he rode it for a while and the chain snapped causing engine casing damage. He repaired it, but didn't do a great job with the sump, which still leaks slightly, so it's been off the road ever since. I offered to buy it back off him, but he won't sell it back, so it looks like it's going to rot in his garden and never be seen again! :(

The KTM LC4 Enduro and Hyosung XRX are very different animals. The KTM, or me Katie Em Elciefor is 625cc compared to the Hyosung's 125cc's and while Katie can be refered to as a super moto (enduro with super moto wheel conversion) the Hysung is definitely NOT super moto. I got the Hyosung through an E.P. Barrus rep I worked with and picked it up cheaper than dealer's can get them for. E.P. Barrus were the sole importers. The Hyosung is a pretty solid Korean bike Manufactured by S&T, one of Korea's biggest manufacturing companys that also make engines and parts for Suzuki. Over the 6 years I've had it there ain't much that's gone wrong with it, it's very reliable and starts on the button every time it's been asked. The engine is the same as Suzuki's GS125 but has DOHC with shims and not SOHC and tappets.

I bought the Hyosung to replace a KE100 that I used for a short commute to work as the other bikes I had at the time were all to big.

On my recent trip to Scotland the Hyosung would have been better suited, power wise, to the snow on the roads and weather conditions. I'd have had to have fitted different tyres to make it work but would have been ideal for the little twisty tracks and snow covered hill roads. In the snow and icy conditions the KTM has too much grunt and spins up with very little effort... and I'm only little which doesn't help, better with MX tyres. With the Distenzia tyres fitted I struggled with grip when the snow was 1-2" deep. Any deeper than that and it seemed to make it's own tracks and stay in the groove and be a bit more stable. However on the lowland gravel and fire tracks where the road was made of broken rock and gravel me Katie brought a smile to my face and romped on in sideways thumper mode.

Here's the KE100 mentioned and the XJR that I got rid of last July just before I moved.

Some of you blokes have alot of bikes!
I have:
1997 KTM 250 EXC, my first bike, bought for $500 with a cracked barrel, rebuilt the motor, bought new plastics, made new stickers etc etc.  Had it for years, great fun :).
199X Husky TE610, bought this for $2500 years ago with the intent to fix it up, had collapsed wheel bearings, but ran well, just rough around the edges.  Behr motard wheels and big Brembo brake etc on it....like 5 years later it's still sitting in the shed.  I've rewired it, put on a dash, made new spacers for the wheel bearings, new timing chain, new oil reed (no pump), new clutch basket (old one was cracking!) etc
Doesn't start now, look at it like once every few years but should get the motivation to make it go sometime in the distant future haha!

And pics.

Only one at the moment for me  ;) I was looking at a Blackbird but the insurance quote was a joke. I'm sure I'll end up with another one or two by the end of the year....

My bro had a Gs 550 and it was very reliable. I remember when i was a kid they were regarded as very strong engines as they had a roller bearing crankshaft. In those days plain bearings weren't as good. I seem to recall the gsx 550 has a soft top end and electrical issues.. Also was it not a 16" front wheel?

VN800 nearly finished, just need to put the new back shocker on and scrub up the rear whitewall, then its MOT time.

CBF1000 (yawn) up for sale very soon, a very capable machine for moving you and your luggage/wife from where you are to where you want to go and back again.

The kwak will be a drifter then? I thought cbf's were supposed to be really good all round touring bikes? Whats up with the fairing bracket?
Title: Re: What bikes do you have in your garage?
Post by: Billy Balthorpe on 13 March 2015, 12:23:57 am
Nope, its a VN800 Classic.

The CBF is a wonderful machine for touring, there's nothing at all wrong with it. It will get you and whatever you want to wherever you want to go and back, it handles perfectly, its comfy, the seat-footpeg-handlebar set up is nigh on perfect, the engine is a peach, tourquey, powerful, responsive and economical. But you never get off it after a ride and think "I love that bike", you get off it and think "We are here!".

As for the Fazer, it looks like its gone over onto something soft and bent the faring bracket without marking the faring, I think that this is a common thing to happen during a bit of a spill due to the complete lack of good second hand spares, the FZS600 and the Gen 2 Fazer 1000 obviously don't suffer from this problem as Ebay is full of the bloody things. Well, ive found one, new, at nearly £200!!
Title: Re: What bikes do you have in your garage?

I had a fairing bracket that was slightly squint. The local bike shop straightened it and i repainted it and sold it. The buyer said it was perfect. Why dont you take it to bike shop and get it heated and straightened?

Sorted out the fairing bracket with help from Hazel my favourite crowbar (see the Italian Job film).

Removed the faring, mirrors, lights etc and found that I need 2 new fairing infill panels, both have the tabs that bolt through to the side of the fairing snapped off and the holes are broken with large repair washers doing their job.

That'll be more stuff to add to the list then!

I never had it long enough to find out, some bastard nicked it.
I did have a moment on the GSX that's stayed with me, I was once out riding it and everything must have been just perfect for 2/3 minutes it was like riding in a bubble everything went silky smooth and silent, a very strange experience one that I've never had since, weird!!

Here is a versys i just bought...... Everything was working fine, but hands were cold, so i fitted heated grips.. Went for a run and the bike started behaving oddly :\  I managed to get it home to find the battery had 9v :(  Charged the battery and fired it up and it read 12v across the battery terminals while it was running, so there was obviously something wrong. The headlights also stopped working :thumbdown . I unplugged the reg/rect and one of the terminals came out with the plug along with some water. I replaced the reg/rect and it is charging, but headlight still aint working :'( Here is a pic of said beast -

I'm thinking about swapping the FZS for an XJR1300 though, fancy a change and think the XJRS look great in the blue or yellow speedblock paint. Will be more bird friendly too I hope.

I didn't say I don't have a bike; just that I don't have one in my garage at the moment. It's gone on holiday for a bit. But it's sad to walk into the garage and there's no bike there. Very empty. Even when it's pissing down with rain, you go into your garage, and there it is, a promise of sunny days to come.

I know 1 thing already, having gone over 2 bumps on the road home near me ,that used to kick me out the seat of my Fazer, the Tracer just soaked them up-guess I should of fitted that new R6 shock that ive had laying around since the autumn.
Im loving the Tracer, a great handling bike, easy to ride and the sound of the engine/exhaust is  growing on me.

I really like them! Like a TDM850 only with Honda build quality. The only problems are price, and I think they would be a little underpowered for my taste at about 55bhp? That's the only reason I sold my TDM, another 20bhp and it would have been fine. Now that Yamaha Tracer, that's more like it, still too expensive for me unfortunately  :'(  Plus, im not quite sure about the look of the engine, too may engine covers, all covered with shiny bolts, lots of them, kinda looks as if they have thrown the various parts of the engine at it and bolted them on where they landed. I think it would be a black engine bolt set if I ever had the cash to buy one. Which should be in about 8 years.

I realise there's different opinions on running them in, taking it gentle'ish for the first 600 miles makes sense to me, I really meant to say getting those 600 miles on the clock and the 1st service done by easter was the annoying thing because im away from home a lot over the next 3 weeks but want to get out and play more after easter without worrying about the milage/service issue.

How do you find the fuel injection on a steady throttle? I have heard a couple of threads about the bike hunting slightly. Its a common thing with modern bikes these days, as the manufacturers are trying to get them to run as lean as possible. Some have it and some don't. I had a st 1050 sprint that was silky smooth and i now have a versys 650 that doesn't hunt at all, but it is very on / off, which is a pain on slow corners.

Ive watched loads of video's on youtube about the MT 09 TRACER and think there was only the 1 that criticised the F/i and he admited he was being very nit picking, its my first ever non carbed bike and ive only done 280 miles but im not having any obvious problems, I guess only more saddle time will tell, personaly im getting on fine with the bike.
will be sad to see my Fazer go this saturday but she served me well for the 3,500 miles I put on her.

I collected my new MT-07 on 1st March but because of other demands on my time had only managed 340 miles up to last Thursday. Because so many new bikes were sold by my dealer they were expecting a lot coming in for 600 mile service before Easter.
So I booked the bike in for this coming Friday & last Friday did a 183 mile jaunt over the border and a circuit of some of my favourite roads in Powys.
Odo now showing 540 so must get a few more miles on today or tomorrow.
got a bit of a shock when dealer mentioned cost of this service(basically oil/oil filter & sump plug washer) = £138-24 & that includes a 20% discount!
Apparently they now have to check torque settings of most fasteners(Yamaha stipulation) so majority of cost is labour. At least it shouldnt have to revisit their workshop for  another 6000 miles(2 years for me).
I am seriously liking this bike & have just ordered a nice radiator guard from Germany as the rad is extremely vulnerable to stone damage.
Will post pics shortly.
5/10 years ago I would have gone for the Tracer-but the 07 is plenty enough for me to have fun on.
Cleaned Fazer yesterday & was reminded what a brilliant bike it is!

It is an fzr 600. I saw the advert on line and contacted the guy. He stayed about 1 1/2 mile away, so i went to see it and made an offer. He accepted :)  I then had to push the bike 1 1/2 miles back to my house. (It was all uphill) Without a word of a lie i thought i was going to collapse in the street :( . I thought i was clever.... i brought tools to remove the calipers because they were sticking...Unfortunately for me the chain was completely rusted solid. It felt like i was pushing a pan european with a flat tyre :grumble Got it home eventually (i think it took 45 mins) My missus said my face was purple :'(  I got stuck into it over the course of a month or so.. new battery, cleaning carbs etc... It ran really well and pulled cleanly, kept it for a few months and sold it on. I will never forget pushing that bike till the day i die. ;)

Dave 48, ive done 585 on the Tracer in a week ( helps being' retired ' / unemployed I guess ! ) so  got my 1st service booked for next tuesday, Fowlers do a 'while you wait ' service so I'll have to lose myself in Brizzle for the day but its a hell of a lot easier than getting the bus home and back again the next day.
im truly loving the Tracer, a great bike to ride either bimbling or 'making progress', bearing in mind ive been restriced to below 8,000 rpm it still shifts and the sound of the triple is growing on me, id love to stick the Acropovic on it but that will have to wait untill I get another job
as for you paying for the 1st service, I think your being mugged mate, as its meant to be free bar consumables, id look into it mate, maybe because your late in getting it done is the reason your getting charged ?  Enjoy the 07  :thumbup

My missus actually wants me to have one of these and, spend money on it, get it so it looks nice, and (best of all) I never have to sell it. Its the bike I had when I met her. First time she ever got on any bike at all, she got on, said "its not that bad" I took off and went from Stoke to the services on the M5 where the M50 meets it without stopping. She was sort of shell shocked by the time we got there (it was a "busy" trip), and climbed back on after fuelling up with a sort of automatic "mind in neutral" look on her barely visible face. We then rode to Pembrey circuit without stopping, and put a tent up at some rally or other and I proceeded to let her see all the stupid sides of me I could muster. It didn't work, she still married me in the end. Now I need an FZR1000, I would buy my own back, but ive heard the guy uses it for racing, so im not likely to get that back cheaply.

Nick, Im not one of those "something for nothing" types. But for any new bike purchaser to have to fork out a further £138 within 6 weeks of taking delivery!-Doesnt happen with cars now does it?
One more example of where motorcyclists are paying out proportionately more than cage owners-motorcycling is apparently a "leisure pursuit" & we are to be "milked" accordingly. :'(

Pilgo, The service isnt overdue_ I paid list price for the bike less £100. According to the salesperson who I have known a few years & trust what he says, Yamaha are responsible for this hike in cost of 1st service as they stipulate a torque check of every important fastener(thats most of them then!) on the bike.Hence the increased labour cost.
Enjoy the MT-09.
At least I get a "free" loan bike for the day otherwise it would be three buses in bike gear!

ive just joined a MT owners forum, predominantly an american site but plenty of brits on there, this charge for the 1st service was mentioned in there, your right that it appears to be down to yamaha cancelling the free service from january 1st this year BUT some dealers appear to be still not charging for it, I'll be ringing my lot tomorrow about it plus a worrying comment that theres a recall on certain MT bikes, both 09 and the Tracer ?!!!!  Oh, and the fact they said my bike would be datatagged but it not being done ( I was so excited about picking the bike up I never noticed )

Thought they were all being datatagged now as Yamaha have signed up to the new industry approved anti-theft scheme. Yours should have been done by Fowlers I would have thought. Worth checking out.

Seems to me that yam and the dealers have pulled a right blinder here by lowering the price at the shop and then adding it back on at the service two weeks later.
As for recalls I dont like buying new stuff as soon as it comes out as there always seems to be recalls or "bugs" that only get found out once thousands of units are out there basically being tested by early adopters.

Unfortunately, waiting for bugs to be ironed out can take rather a long time. Remember the recall on thousands of GSXRs not so long back, to do with the brakes? Some of those bikes had been on the road for years. But on balance, I think the manufacturers (Jap ones anyway) do very extensive testing before new models are released and catch most of any problems that might have arisen before release. Bound to be the odd thing that slips through, just the nature of these things. It wouldn't stop me buying new if that's what I wanted, unless I'd heard something really horrendous.

Very jealous of all you guys getting new bikes - no, doesn't mean I want rid of the  :faz - just makes me want something to keep it company in the garage. It'll happen soon (I keep promising myself  :rolleyes ). Well, probably not brand new, but hopefully something nice and fun.

Well, I phoned Fowlers about the non datatagging of my bike, apparantly they were so busy , being the new registration date, that they run out of the kits and it will be done next tuesday at the 1st service !! Not the best start to a 2  year dealership 'association' me thinks.
as for the recall, they (Fowlers) have heard nothing so maybe its just a stateside thing BUT ive read on FJ09.ORG that owners are getting emails/phonecalls from their dealers saying  categorically NOT to ride their bikes, and people who have gone to pick their new bikes up and the dealership wont release the bikes to them  :eek    something to do with a shift shaft that could snap and lock the rear wheel up ? Unfortunately im away from home so unable to check my vin number againts the list of affected bikes, though none of the other Brits on the forum seem to be to bothered/affected so fingers crossed its a small batch of yank bikes.still not good though
oh, and thankfully Fowlers are still doing the 1st service free of labour charges  :woot

Bought this :eek . I can't help it..... I enjoy tinkering and bring heaps back to life :\  It is carbon wrapped :groan  It is misfiring... and the reason the owner gave me was he over revved it and he thinks it may have bent a valve or the head gasket is leaking... First thing i will do is a compression test and then decide what to do from there. Anyone want to guess what model of bike it is? I had a brand new one as a company bike when i was a courier many years ago. Ps.. It was stupid cheap!

If i get it running good and sort all the issues i would be happy with £300 if i decide to sell it. if i like it i may keep it and use it for work. It's purely for something to tinker with. Recently restored a fzr 600, then a gsxr 400. Saving them from the scrap heap.. i enjoy restoring bikes , so they can be used on the road again. Not restoring to mint condition, just enough to get running well and mot'd.

Hotmetal...a question please mate........what is all the crap about triumph street triple r's using loads of oil.........is it a myth or does it only affect certain years or is it just normal for that engine???
Title: Re: What bikes do you have in your garage?
Post by: hotmetal on 28 June 2015, 01:47:11 pm
Dunno mine doesn't seem to. I check and top it up occasionally but only a little needed. My current Fazer doesn't hardly use any and the Street is the same. My old 2002 gen 1 used to use a litre every 2-3 000 miles by comparison (and the engine is the same between 2002 and 2004 gen 1s). I'm on the Street triple forum as well and I haven't heard anyone complaining about heavy oil use. Is it a rumour on one of the other triumph forums? Maybe it's a handful of people who didn't run their bikes in properly, I don't know, haven't heard about this.

More specific : my Street R is the 2009 model. Stock pipes/filter etc. Bought with 3k on the clock. Now at 12k. Has maybe needed '3 glugs' (100ml? ) of oil since the 6k service.

Currently Fazerless  :o , but now have two bikes for the first time, A Versys 650 and recently a bike for the back roads , a XT660R, love the Versys but not yet bonded with the XT, how a major manufacturer can produce a bike with such poor fuelling is beyond me, anyways thinking I may chop them both in for a Tracer sometime in the future, or keep'em and pick up another Fazer to make three, not sure yet...

Title: Re: What bikes do you have in your garage?

Like the look of those XTs but wasn't sure about the power/fuelling myself either.

Thing is the engine is used in quite a few bikes i believe yet yamaha fooked it up.......theres a little Aprillia uses the engine and gets great reviews.

Cheers for update on str....my old man mentioned it to me but id never heard....a googke throws up some rumblings but i alwaays thought they were reviewed as one of thee best uk road bikes

got an r6 shock in which seems fine with my weight but might be a tad hard for a lightweight, front end is zxr400 and it handles very well to be honest.

Cheers Noggy. The Street is not quite as practical as the Fazer  (underseat pipes and no fairing) but it is more comfy, lighter, brilliant handling and fun, with a lovely power delivery. For UK roads it's top fun, hence why my Fazer doesn't come out as often, except if I need luggage/pillion/weather protection and long journey capability. Street is ok for most things and the most fun but if you've got a Fazer in the garage too you pick the best for the job in hand! Still lusting after an xjr 13 though. ..

They are great on big throttle openings but crap on half throttle, which makes for fun on roundabouts and the like, clutch slip is the only way to truly control it, I know there are loads of fixes etc listed but when you look into it none of them are guaranteed to work, plus the cost can soon start rocketing if you need new maps etc.

I'll probably move mine on soon which is a shame because it's dead comfy, great on bumpy back roads and has loads of torque which is fun up to about 70 but the Versys is a far better bike to ride
