I've just had the yellow engine fault light come on and the handbook says it's an electrical fault. (2008 FZ1)
Is this a common problem ? If so, does anyone know where I should be looking or does it need to go to the dealer to be sorted.
Thanks in advance.

Do you get an error code as well?
-
No error code.
I've had the battery on charge for an hour so and now the light has gone out.
Would a battery problem cause the light to come on ?
-
A low battery could have caused it, not totally sure about this but I think the ecu senses the low voltage and turns off non essential stuff, this then causes the engine light to come on.
I have also heard it can happen from a loose connection, if you keep the battery charged up and it happens again check all the connections for tightness/corrosion.

Ok, thanks for that.

Check this out Grayo, an old post regarding how to use the diagnostics tool and find the codes.

I had the light come on once, i was gutted but i took it out for a spin and it was fine....next day i go out to ot and the light no longer came on....but i have an intermittent starting issue which i still need to rectify (been sayi g it for about 4 months now :rolleyes ) which is most likely a dodgy connector somewhere......i have just got some contact cleaner and dielectric grease so i can go through as many connectors as i can get to......fingers crossed it'll sort my issue.
Ive never done contacts before so not sure what to expect but if any of the connectors look particularly corroded then ill post up which ones coz the way i see it, could be inherrent and other bikes with simillar age/mileage could suffer the same.

That's great, thanks Noggy. I turned the ignition on about an hour ago and the light was off. Think I'll order a new battery first and take it from there.

I'm now sure it's a battery fault.
If I turn the ignition on when the battery is on charge the engine fault light is out.
As soon as I unplug the charger and turn the ignition on, the engine fault light comes on.
New Motobatt battery has been ordered.

Just fitted the new battery and all is well again.
No engine fault light. :)
