Just thought I'd ask if there are any runners out there? Im 34, Just started enjoying running and at the moment achieving 10km in 44.18 minutes. Not sure if this is good? My best mile is 6.40?
Any training tips in reducing 10km time?

Start doing sprints in between your normal pace, not to long, then give yourself time to recover, then repeat as you get fitter you will get a quicker time. Always finish with a spint

Took me 45 minutes the other morning to ride 8.85km to work when the bus strike was on. :groan

I used to love phys as it's part of my job and would definitely be happy with that time !!
The best way to see good results imo is a nice long run 2 times a week, other days fartlek training, circuits ... anything that requires short bursts, hi energy over a 30/60min workout !!
I need to get back into it, i have am illness :/ last year went from 85kg of muscle to 76kg in a few weeks .. now cos of meds I weigh just under 90kg all fat and adviced not to work out :(
keep at it!! :)

One piece of advice I will give you is make sure you are wearing top quality running shoes. Jogging, running etc! is high impact.
I was a runner for over 50 years and my knees are shot to feck. To be honest if it is fittness you want to maintain nothing is better than swimming. No impact on any joints and is also a full cardio workout as well.
If you continue to run make sure when you finish you do stretching exercises , squats etc!

Lew im a relatively young un here but ive gotta agree. I did running during a short 5 years in the Army and ok it is functional but to do it to extremes isnt exactly good on the body and i would even at my age say that a mixture of decent weight training & some kinder on the joints cardio excercise is far more beneficial in the long term.
My old man took up running at 59 & he is hooked on it & the tendency is to run longer, faster, further, timing, garmin gps, facebook running updates, running clubs etc etc.....it can become addictive.......he is now 62 and he's off for an x ray on his knees today because his joints just cant take it regardless how much fancy kit he has bought and all the indicators he is getting he just cant seem to accept that the running is trashing him.
Go to the gym instead and see how much a decent squatting or deadlifting sesh can get you blowing outta yur arse more than a jog will.

I'm with noggy on this one... plus I enjoy strength / resistance training significantly more than anything remotely cardio related...

Crossfit is good ...
Just don't do the rubbish kip style pull ups! !

That's a very good time for somebody who has just started running , I'm not anywhere near that time yet , I will be 50 in march , I started running last may and hadn't done any running since I left school , I will be taking part in the Bristol 10k on May 31st and am looking to do it in an hour , I am currently running twice a week , doing strength training twice a week and stretch training twice a week , plus cycling to work 5 miles each way , when i'm on days , as Noggy says it can be addictive , I bought myself a tomtom multisport watch at Christmas to help improve my times , you can set it to race a previous time . I am hoping to take part in Bristol half Marathon in September .

Many thanks for everyone's comments. I can see the what people say about the addiction. Once over the pain of running! Just going to keep working on it with intervals. Decent running trainers.... Top of list followed by Gucci gadgets :D
Going to see if there are any running clubs local to me.

Couldn't agree more. I dislike running. I swim approx. 5 times a week. Usually do 1k, (40 lengths of 25m pool),breaststroke, in a fraction under 1/2 hour. Sometimes go for the mile (45'ish mins). Occasionally go bonkers & get into triple figures if time allows. I've never felt fitter in my life (& I still go to the pub :b).
