Thousands of motorcyclists could be unwittingly riding without insurance because of confusion over what constitutes a full licence.
Many riders tell their insurance company they have had a full licence since the date they passed their standard motorcycle test.
But the insurance ombudsman has concluded they are wrong, and a full licence is only obtained when the 33bhp power restriction elapses, usually two years after passing the standard test.

Actualy that is something i didnt know. well more that i wouldnt have considered realy as i passed mine long ago before all this bollox came in.
But my daughter has the 33bhp limit so its something i wouldnt have thought off when filling in her apps online. some sites in fact most dont offer a 33bhp or limited liscence drop down box just full or previsonal so kinda makes it hard to be honest then

This is all bollox.
The licence start date is the licence start date. The difference is a restriction to your entitlement. If you passed your test on a 125 on 1/1/2010, your full licence is valid from that date. The fact that you are restricted to 33hp until the 31/12/2011 is irrelevant. The Insurance Ombudsman needs a kick in the knackers.

So your telling me that i pass the restricted test and ride a bike with under 33bhp for 2 years having answered that i have a full licence and that i have held it since the date i passed my test, so two years when renewal comes up.
I actually should then be saying that i have held my licence no years because my restriction is listed. that is bull shit.
also what if you pas the end of your restriction part way through your insurance year what do you do then? you suddenly go from ridding one and a half years with a full license to no years. Utter bollox!!!!!!

Just got my licence back from the DVLA ('cause they cocked up on me wearing glasses on one category, but not the other)
and realised they've changed the date I passed my motorcycle test from the date i actually passed (01/08/07) to 01/08/09 :\
Not that I'll be telling my insurance company, I still count the 2 years CBT as no claims :)
Although, is that what they're saying- no claims bonus doesn't count? Or are they just saying the time you passed your test is later?

I was lucky enough not to have to put up with a stupid 33bhp restriction, what a waste of time! I must be an old git now I suppose, I did my test in 1989 when I was 17 and had an FZR1000 EXUP to play with. Good old days. :lol

If one sat one's test on a kh250 the chances are the examiner couldn't see through the smoke anyhoo....In Anniesland in Glasgow the examiner walked or cycled round the block and through alleys while the motorcyclist followed a proscribed route....halcyon days

Code 01, eyesight correction.
It should have been put on all my entitlements, but wasn't included on my car.
They sent me a letter saying it makes no difference, but they want to keep their records straight so I sent it away.
(with a note saying take of the 33bhp restriciton whilst you're there and i've got photocopies so no funny business thank you very much)
always nice to know your taxes are being used well... :rolleyes
