Hi all!
I'm going to replace my chain and sprockets as soon as the weather permits.
Turns out the chain I bought has a split link.
The Haynes manual specifically states not to use these.
Is it safe? has anyone else used them on their Fazer?
Also if it's no good, is it safe to reuse the backing plate off the old chain?

UPDATE: Cheers for the advice guys, turns out the chain came with both types of link, changed the sprockets myself then got my mechanic to break and fit the chain.
Next thing on my list to buy is a chain breaker/riveter!

Personally speaking, no way!
The new chain should come with a soft link that will need a riveting tool to secure.

I've just replaced mine, it came with a soft link, I really wouldn't use a split link, i had the swing arm off so I took it to local bike shop who riveted it for free, did a better job than I could. I looped it over swing arm before refitting. As for back plate reuse I wouldn't, use a new soft link.

I do my dirt bike chain at home with a hammer and dolly.
Been ages since I changed the chain on it but it seems to have done the job nicely.

What make of chain did you buy?
Most chains come complete, but have a split link and soft link in the package.
This allows you break the chain and not have to remove the swinging arm.
However I usually remove the swing arm as it allows me check and regrease all the linkage bearings

I used a DID 530VX X ring chain with a breaker/rivet tool from fleabay, 2200miles gone and ok thus far. Kit included new link and rivets - through the split link away
