Title: pull away
Post by: spider on 29 October 2014, 10:23:17 pm
put my fzs600 in the garage had service, all was great for a couple of months. I pulled it out of my garage it just about started. tried to pull away after choke had been turned off and bike was warm enough, but it did not want to go. twist throttle and it wanted to die. any ideas?

Experienced something similar after having laid up the bike for a while.
It was down to the pilot and/or slow running jets in the carbs being partially blocked up

It's a fag of a job taking the carbs off to clean them.
But you don't need any special tools to do it.

Sounds like what I experiance and always have when first start from a few days/weeks not ride, choke wise i only need a bit and then almost turn it straight off, give a few revs while I put my lid on then ride off all is fine if I am light hadned with it but if I try and give it some beans then like you it wants to die, but after a couple of mins ride its fine.
And even if I stop and cool for 1 or 2 hours its still all ok its just that first start from a long rest, like I say as far as I remember its always been like that.

Sounds like it's not getting enough juice. Try riding it around the block with the choke partially on and see if it clears itself. If not warm it up and throw some water on the headers and see if one dries slower than the others that'll tell you which cylinder/s have the problem. No harm checking your fuel filter and tank for blockages but it'll probably need a carb clean as Paul said.

I often experience the hesitation & a bit of spluttering after start up when the bike has not been run for a while.Always clears by the time I get to third gear & is fine from then on.I just put it down to stale/degraded fuel in the float bowls. The bike is very low mileage & really needs to be used more I guess :rolleyes.Noticed on a ride out the other day tho that the idle speed has dropped to around 800RPM & the clutch is a lot noisier than normal at tickover.(still goes nice & quiet with the lever pulled in).Thought it was going to stall at one point!.Wondering now if it's only running on 3 at tickover due to a jet blockage maybe.Or do the carbs just need balancing?.(stills pulls like normal through all the gears).

thanks guys for input. all cylinders ok. I had that problem once and water trick sussed it out. tick over did drop a bit. I think it will be a carb clean. will find somebody to do it as all I know is how to make it go along on a ride at  max revs while making me smile down the lanes. I wonder how much that will cost to carb clean. or might get an additive and see if that works

Have a go with STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner, half a bottle per full tank of fuel.
It's good stuff.

Well if it doesn't work then your bike probably won't make it as far as me anyway!  :b
