Title: Rear end overhaul and R6 shock swap

I'm now in possession of an R6 shock, supplied and modified by kebab19, many thanks to him for that and what a lovely looking thing it is too. As my chain and sprockets are at the end of their life I thought I would take this chance to strip out, clean and overhaul the rear end.

I removed front sprocket engine cover, chain fling, so much chain fling every where so I set to with a shovel, an hour or so later and I've found crank cases, another hour and it's as clean as I can get it.

Now check front sprocket nut and it's the old type but luckily it is tight and in good Nick but will still be replaced for thicker one.

Sprocket teeth have looked better.

Splines looking good. Back wheel out next then undo linkage and remove and amazingly it looks well greased and bearings are in good nick so just regrease needed there. Next swing arm bolt, worryingly not very tight, removed rear brake and torque arm and caliper then dropped the swing arm out rear shock next and yuck.

Set to with the degreaser and scrubbing brush.

Well that's as far as I can go untill New chain and sprockets arrive, should be midweek so will be putting back together next weekend so tune in then for next episode.

loving this,im getting a shock off kebab and so will be doing this myself (ok,getting my mate to do the spanner work,i'll just be de greasing everything !! )
did you take a picture off the gear linkage,so i know what to expect?
i de greased the front sprocket area when we changed the old nut to the new better one,will no dought have to do it again though....

Before refitting the rear frame fit the shock on it's top bolt.  I found it much easier lifting the frame up to it than fighting to fit the shock up through the  frame :)

More shiny stuff arrived, New chain and sprockets and I popped into wemoto and picked up a new front sprocket nut and tab washer.

That's everything sorted for the rebuild and all the bearings are now greased up ready to go back on. All I need is some good weather at the weekend and the forecast is looking good, fingers crossed for Saturday.

Sun is shining so good day to rebuild the old girl. As suggested by midden, shock in first then feed shock though swing arm as I offer it up to its mountings, not forgetting to thread the chain on to swing arm beforehand, so much easier than trying to pass the fat end of the R6 shock through a small hole, pivot bolt in and torqued up. On with the linkage parts and dog bones, which look really nice, all torqued up to Haynes quoted ratings (hope they got these ones right). Front sprocket on next on with the new nut and tab washer, thread chain on to sprocket, rear sprocket fixed to carrier with stainless nuts ( I didn't use any old nuts to be on the safe side I used pro bolt stainless Sprocket nuts), back wheel in and it's mostly back together.

Front sprocket cover back on, adjust chain tention and wheel alignment chain guard and done. I checked all nuts and bolts to make sure I didn't miss any and all is how it should be and tight. Next take it for a spin.

Back form test ride and wow, grin factor is back, she goes round corners again without trying to kill me and much smoother feel, so pleased with that. I haven't done anything to the shock, the settings are as they were when kebab19 sent it to me and it's 100% better already. I would be grateful for any suggestions as to set up from any foccers who have got one of these lovely shocks.

thanks for the picture of the gear linkage that i asked for,i was curious to see where the bearings/spacers would be as neon knight mentioned elsewhere that his were shot when he replaced his rear shock, so im keen not to find mine are bad as and when i get round to fitting my R6 shock from kebab19, as i wont be able to leave the bike in the middle of my mates 2 ramp garage as it'll be in the way of his job while i wait for the new parts to arrive,if needed.
i think that explains myself,clear as mud eh?!!  :lol

It's the suspension linkage you're after not gear link  ;)

Haha, the only bit I didn't take a picture of don't panic though, when you remove it, removed the 3 bolts securing it to the frame, shock and dog bones and the whole thing comes away intact. Check spacers for free pay, slide them out and check bearing needle bearings, ideally you will see greased rollers securely held in a cage. If any of them need replacing, they can be tapped out but must be pulled back in, tapping them in will damage them. If your unsure of what your looking at when you do put a lovely R6 shock on your bike and you've got the linkage in your hand pop some pics on here and I'm sure help will follow

i looked it up on the AJ SUTTON site, who use similar pictures to the one you posted from the Haynes manual,so i kind of know what im looking at as and when it gets fitted
 
fingers x'd they are ok, the joys of having to get it done on the day,rather than being able to leave it in bits while you wait for new parts to arrive eh?!!
