Been reading lots of threads about front end mods to naked, street fighter, cafe racer and all that. And cluster mods and rewiring. All this madness me wonder what people say to their insurers when they ask 'has the vehicle been modified?'
Naturally there is a risk in not declaring and probably a cost of doing so. I lost £8000 in 2011 when my insurers didn't pay out after an accident of a trophy which had a modded frobt end;the police had the bike recovered and subsequenty engineers found out the bike was modded. Insurance void.
Just wondering what people tell their insurers and what extra costs they pay in premiums?
-
Ah, that's why you come across as so argumentative and bitter :lol
-
Perception is everything.
So you don't have a useful comment then.
Anyone else
-
Yes, declare your mods or don't crash. :D
-
Read the OP :pokefun
-
I declared all my mods and they made no difference; exhaust, modded seat, shock, aftermarket indicators, wide bars etc... As for the front end, I simply said "I've removed the fairing and screen" as that is the truth and he said yeah no problem. I guess now if the bike was damaged it will be much cheaper to replace a £50 headlight, £20 brackets and remake a £5 aluminium clock mount than fork out about £400+ for a new fairing, paint, screen, most likely OEM headlight and headlight / fairing bracket.
I still have the original clocks on now so nothing has been rewired except the indicator connector points as one was a bit dodgy. Some wires have been shortened slightly to hide them easier in the headlight shroud. I would like to get a Koso speedo cluster but they are probably about £200 odd quid for the individual round guages in total and I'm not sure if I can be bothered wiring them up. If a fly screen can be fitted and looks good and covers all the iffy bits I will be more than happy, plus it might stop a few bees flying down my top which has happened every time I've been to Wales so far (3 times).
-
I told mine (bmw shock, r1 forks) and it went up a bit, nothing outrageous. I have known insurance companies not bother in the event of an accident unless they believe the mods had some bearing on it. Ie magnesium race rims collapsing
-
Thanks guys
I'm thinking of modding the front to avoid issues raised by yamazer-92
There are lots of threads on here about this but not one I can find on how to mount clocks without manufacturing since form of bracket. I have no tools or mechanucal/electrical knowledge of this particular bike to do this. So looking for a simple solution then works use forks mounted lights and screen etc. Just wondered about insurance. Sounds like my issue is the clocks or something I can slot in, rather than insurance ?
-
I had no real idea what I was going to do to mount the clocks other than a few little bits of info here and there in threads. Obviously step 1 is completely strip the front end down to the forks and headstock / ignition. Then you can think about your clock bracket and see what needs doing better. I bought a sheet of aluminium that was about 30x50cm or something and quite thin I would guess 2-3mm and that was £5. Myself and my Dad then went about making templates from cardboard, it was a lot of trail and error, then went for a first prototype in the aluminium when we were happy. The plate is big enough for 2 attempts so your first one doesn't have to be exact first time. It can all be done with a hacksaw, a file, a drill, a hammer and some patience. For the bend so that the clocks are visible when you're in your normal riding position, you need to carefully hammer away at the underside of the aluminium and it's once again trial and error and taking your time. I will try and get a photo of what I made this weekend and the shape of it if you would like, it's crude but it works. It's also worth buying some rubber trim to neaten up all the edges and make any sharp areas safe.
As for actually mounting it, I drilled and tapped a hole into the underside of the top yoke and used a hole that was already there for the throttle cable guide or something then bolted it on from there. We then drilled two holes in each corner for the clocks to mount into, I sawed off the third clock bolt at the top of the clocks and painted the rear of the clocks black to try and tidy it up a bit. It's all a bit tight with the ignition like I say as the whole thing is bulky, leaving a bit too much of a gap between headlight and underside of clocks which you don't see on purpose built nakeds. I will be trying to sort this out though. If you want I can try and find the links for the ebay items I purchased tomorrow, things like the headlight brackets, rubber mounts for them to fit our forks and the headlight itself which is actually far better than the OEM boxeye headlight. I would say though if you plan on doing this it pays to get some better looking handlebars as the OEM ones look terrible naked.

If I knew what you were taking about I'm sure that was a helpful post.
Regrettably, my expertise is more electrical. I could bite you to tears with science of electromagnetism, ohms law, fluid dynamics and more. But what you say means very little to me. I wish I understood as I'm sure it's simple. Ah well
Edit: referring to the process of turning metal and machine engineering in one of the threads on the forum where I read of a foccer building a custom bike. Can't recall the thread link tho as I didn't save it.. But then I read post above again and noticed references to hack saw and tapping which is pretty straight forward, just need to find somewhere that sells thin alloy around here, not easy.

I told my insurance company, although it's a while back, and they said that they were only interested in modifications to performance, handling and braking. Basically stuff that would increase the risk factor of a claim.
-
Nothing major for me just braided front hose, told them just to be sure and they said they are fine
-
See, i don't get some of the things i looked at last time i got insured.
When asked about mods i obviously wanted to declare my exhaust so hit the 'yes' button and then a world of pain popped up.
There was a list so big, and worse still quite a few applied to my bike, so as i knew i wouldn't be using that company anyway i ticked what applied to my bike and it resulted in something like a 120% increase on my eventual premium.
I can understand things like heated grips, because even though they are highly beneficial to all riders, they are of course electrical so a botch job "could" result in problems, but one item on the list that stuck in my mind as an extra to be declared was.......a tank pad??? :rolleyes
What the foc is that all about?
-

desirable item I suppose and fairly easy to steal. I've not mentioned mine, never crossed my mind to, heated grips either

You wouldn't put an insurance claim in for a stolen tank pad?
-
Here's a few from Bennetts:
-
I've got the wrong end of the stick here haven't i.
That says "accepted as standard", presumably meaning these are okay to change but no need to declare?
Saying that, i remember when i opened up that drop box it was asking me to tick where applicable.
If they are accepted as standard then why even put them on there in the first place?

This forum has a long tradition of squirrel jokes. Although, to a certain extent, Exup was the cause of it. :lol
-
Thanks fellas for the feedback on insurance experiences. Obviously I'm going to declare my mods, never modded before but since dropping the bike I've made changes. Seems a bit if hit n miss as to what the underwriters use to ramp up premiums. Thanks again
-
I had two different people from the same company give me very different quotes as a result of extras. The extra in question is the top box for a SR125, one put it down as a modification and doubled the quote. The other list it as an accessory and it didn't affect it.
Insuring the Fazer this week I had a quote go up from £240 to £820 if I listed crash bars. I didn't use them oddly enough.
-
Shop around is my advice. At renewal time I mentioned I will be fitting an akropovik silencer. They said it would bump it up by £200. I switched and the new one charged just £15 more...
-
This is common Andy. And as I lost £8000 due to not declaring., I'm with you... Silly quotes mean I cancel the mod
-
The guy that claimed the topbox was a mod that would push the quote up was an idiot and a lady that called me after I did another money supermarket comparison was really friendly and they were much cheaper then anyone else.
He got a bit funny with me when I said it's a second bike and would remove stuff to keep the costs down and as well as the mod also told me carrying a pillion would increase the premium and that if I listed it as being kept on the driveway I couldn't then keep it in a locked shed in the back garden behind a locked gate.
-
Fukers these insurance lot. Its one of those things that the government mandate you have as a condition to drive, but dont actually run the system unlike vehicle road tax, driving licence and so on. Which means private companies can and do, charge what the fuk they want. Ridiculous

perhaps a nationalised insurance company for the compulsory elements of policies would be a good idea

I'm glad this topic has come up as i've been going nuts about it.
2 mothers days ago i was struggling with what to buy for my mum.......so naturally i decided to buy her a horses head mask..........but they were out of foccin stock :groan .
So then i realised that horses heads arent really what mothers want as a a token of appreciation..............
:think ..............Squirrels heads are much more complimentary!
Bloody typical though that stuff is always outta stock......just last year i was planning ahead....it was mothers day again so i thought i need to be kind.........a chewbacca wookie dressing gown should go down a treat :) .........& they sent her Boba foccin Fett by mistake......absolute bastards!!!!.........so i ended up with it instead. :b

Had to phone my insurance people last time to ask them something (i prefer to avoid phone conversation, 'cos they annoy me) and found out i wasn't insured to ride other bikes, for a second year!
It's not really a big deal, but it's something i've always been allowed to do with every other policy. My brother used to try out bikes quite often and would always let me have a go too in the past, but he's not around now so although it's not an issue as such, it's something i would've preferred to have with my cover.
But i s'pose if it keeps my premium down then i can't really complain.
I will try and get it next time though.

I suppose it depends on why you have insurance......& how much the bike is worth.....& whether you can get by without it.
I don't have insurance because I want to be able to claim back its value if I have an accident. The only reason I have insurance is that it is the law to have it.....so I go TPF&T....£100 of tolls to enable me to get out and enjoy the roads on the bike, but my bike is for fun and only worth a few grand. If I lost it tomorrow then I'd still get by as I have a car to get to work...it isn't like pet insurance whereby I'd be devastated if I couldn't afford to keep my pet alive so I see that as worthwhile....but a bike's a bike..so do I need to declare any mods....well I suppose I should but it isn't high on priority list of things to do. I pay my £100 to stop me popping up on ANPR and I crack on and it's the risk I take....Insurance is all just 1 big gambling game. When I crashed my 600 the other vehicle left the scene and I was TPF&T....shit happens but It's also a personal thing....for me personally if my bike was worth 5k then that'd be a different kettle of fish and I'd be going more in depth....8k definitely.
I also believe that bike insurance should be quite a bit cheaper than car insurance because lets face it most decent crashes on a bike and your focced and you cant claim back the cost of your bike when you're 6 foot under anyway and would you want another bike when you cant use the majority of your limbs...it's only really useful most of the time for small scale falls and bumps...always exceptions of course...again the risk you take on the big insurance gamble.
-
May be there should be another cat of insurance tpft + a fully comp add-on but caped to whatever you want/ feel is a trade off between a write off crash and what you can afford to loose together with waht you save in insurance, -------------------or is this just burtons best "water" talking
Although from a low base I have just got my insurance quote and it as gone up by 60%---------and yet I dont rember crashing or being nicked for speeding, talking on the phone or combing my hair in the mirror or putting lippy on or reading the newspaper or eating an apple ;)
