I need to get some protection for the Mrs FZS600, there is a good chance she is going to drop the bike at a standstill and I want to protect it a bit. He last bike was an ER6 and the bungs were fitted quite high up and when she dropped it there was no damage at all. The FZS mountings look really low! Do I go for engine bars or bungs? Do either of them protect the rest of the bike or only the important bits? Anyone with any experience? Go on don't be shy! Most of us have had the indignity of having to pick a bike up at a junction!

Never had bungs on but had some bars on mine, did a total strip down and rebuild a year back and left them off for cosmetic reasons, they really stuck out, a lot, I mean, way out! Guess it's a personal preference for cosmetic reasons, if you stuff it down the road, you're going to do a lot of damage anyway, esp to the fairing area, the bungs/bars will at least protect the engine casings.

Bike came with crash bungs but if I was choosing between the 2 it would be the greater protection and less potential damage to the frame of crash bars..

Cheers both, that was my thinking, it's clear nothing is going to protect the top of the bike but at least you can stop the oil from coming out!

Crash bars for best protection, you could fit a topbox rack and bolt some bungs to the rack at a strong point for more protection!
Swapping the indicators to smaller ones will help stop the fairing splitting when dropped!

Bungs on the fzs cause more damage than they prevent (my opionion)
I have lower bars that do a perfect job for "putting the bike on its side at a standstill" protection
Search this forum for engine bars or crash bungs and I hve some pickys

I have had a few FZS's in for crash repair where the impact on the bung has bent the engine cradle. I would go for the Renntec full wrap around bars everytime.

Bungs do a good job. They protect the engine from being punctured/broken all the way, while they are softer than the frame material so they bend. Not sure about bars, but they should be even better.
It is also a good thing to make some sort of levers protection, like motocross bikes and some extra fairing protection if possible to mount on fazer.

The plate is a good idea....havn't seen that before...looks good aswell... U should spray it up

I've not had crash bars on mine, but I've had some bungs.
My bike went down in the ice a few months ago and I had R&G engine crash bungs fitted, they saved it receiving damage at all. It's been down once since, and that finished off the same bung. If it'd not already been worn, my exhaust and engine casing might have remained a little more scratch free, but both sorted, and neither damaged to a level that mattered (unlike if I hadn't had them). My previous FZS600 had the same ones fitted, and they saved the engine when someone pull out in front of me. The casing was still broken, but by hitting part of the car, and I was quick enough turning the engine off to be OK. Faring smashed by the car though.
I've now got a genuine Yamaha one on one side, and it's not as sturdy, the bolts are thinner and it doesn't stick out as much - so it'd definitely not work for more than 1 slide. The 2nd slide on the R&G bung resulted in the large bolt running through the frame to bend, but without bending the frame. Very clever!
I say - if you're only worried about her dropping it at lights, bungs will be fine. I'd be as worried about her picking it up, it's not an especially light bike.

I had a set of genuine Yamaha engine bars on my 600 when I came off at about 30mph.
Went down hard and slid down the road but no damage to engine or radiator. Fairing focked though!

I went for the lower engine bars after someone here posted up the part number. I think they look ok but I haven't tested them.

Renntec bars have been ordered and need to be fitted asap as she won't ride the bike without them! I'm hoping buying the better bars will jinx it and she'll never need them!
