Title: My Renntec Rack Snapped :(
Post by: jenic on 24 March 2014, 01:12:41 pm
And this is why you probably shouldn't use a sports rack to mount a top box. I was lucky this didn't come off while riding, think it's time to buy a Givi system.

Wow, good thing it didn't snap off while riding as you say.

Ever since my top box overtaking me "incident" this is why i try and warn people about this happening.

They only have a 2.5kg recommended weight limit, which to me is a bit extreme, but i s'pose this is the reason why!  :\

Darrsi, that is an indication of how slow you ride, even your top box overtook you :lol, but you are correct they have a load rating for a reason.

Ha ha, the box was fed up always being behind me so thought it would have a go up front.  :lol

It was never happy with life as a top box, after working so hard on its life-long dream to become tank bag... it had just had enough and decided suicide was the only option left :(

Yep, I noticed the 2.5kg sticker under it today  :rolleyes

I've used renntecs to support my (small) topbox without issue on a few bikes now. And this one had been on the bike for years with the previous owners topbox on. I've passed it to a family member who is going to re weld it with some added support but I think I'll be buying a Givi system before putting a topbox back on the fazer.

Don't bother with welding, just get the Givi arms, they're much more stronger and designed for the job.

Like they say Jenic - used a lucky ticket there fella - breaks one side and swings down.....who knows.

How the hell is anyone supposed to measure 2.5Kg without a set of scales. But if it was only odds and sods in the box then maybe it was age related and the weight of the box banging up and down.

As said, would go for the givi arms next time.

Sports racks are made to strap waterproofs and Sandwich to!

This is why I found a givi wingrack for mine. Oddly the rack for the 125 was a lot more sturdy then the racks for the bigger bikes.

My lock and chain weighs 5kg so that might give you an idea of what 2.5kg is :eek

Ordered a Givi monorack and top plate today.

Could anyone confirm if I require a grab handle to fit the rack or not?

Have a look at 'Buzz's' post about Allen key size, there's a link to open.

You could get away without one, but you would still need some m10 bolts to hold the side arms in place. All the grab handle does is hold two brackets that support the arms.

I've ordered a grab handle now, it suddenly occurred to me that I'll have a hard time with the centre stand without one lol
