HI,
As the subject, my exhaust has been blowing slightly more than usual out the bottom out of the exhaust end can. I have an original exhaust and until recently have had no issues. I noticed whilst cleaning the winter crap of it that there was a bit of a grinding noise from the end of the end can (as it moved while cleaning it) and since then it;s been blowing and then this rattle appeared yesterday.
I'm very much a mechanical newbie (embarrassingly so) but I really don't want to pay a garage to fix it if it's something I can do myself. I've just had to pay out for some service work and if I'm honest I can't really afford to keep going back.
My questions are, 1) what is it likely to be? I think it's probably something to do with the joint between the end can and the pipe but don't really know what having never taken an exhaust apart before.
2) How likely is it I could repair it myself?
If anyone has any ideas, or happens to be near South West London and fancies having a look (cheeky, I know) I'd be really grateful.
Finally, does anyone know of a good general maintenance course worth taking for a newbie like myself? I'd like to think I'm pretty intelligent but I'll admit that my skills are currently not mechanical

As a guess I'd suggest the gasket is failing between the can and the connection to the pipes / headers. Its not an expensive part and is really easy to check - remove the can is very simple and easy to do, especially with the OEM can. Only the OEM cans seem to have this gasket, all aftermarket systems just use tight fitting metal pipes and a clamp.

Do you mean the silencer part of the exhaust system?
If gas is coming out where the grey pipe goes into the stainless end can (it's all one piece), then it sounds like what happened to mine.
It may be that the exhaust gas condensate has corroded the inside of the silencer.
To be fair I never cut mine up to confirm it, I just put another end can on the bike.

Hi Dead Eye,
In terms of taking the can off, is it simply a case of undoing the exhaust hanger and pulling it off? I can't see anything else that would need loosing (i really am a full on newbie to this stuff)
If it is the gasket will it be obvious to see?

There'll be two bolts to get the end can off. One on the hanger as you have already stated, and then another at the front end of the link pipe, as a band clamp. You'll need to bend down and look under the bike to see it. I'm not sure if it's a fixed fitting on the standard can or loose, so may be at an odd angle. You only need to loosen the front one a few turns to loosen the band, not remove it completely. With that done, twisting the end can back and forth will help it slide off.

It's item #7. If it is faulty, there is likely to be bits missing, or maybe not there at all? You can also see the location of that front bolt.

HJFazer - Do as Jamieg285 has posted in regards to remove the can. The gasket is a sort of wire mesh if I remember correctly and it should be obvious. It will most likely be stuck on the inside of the pipe on the can end. This is all a bit of assumption and based on what you said in your original post but it won't hurt to check it out - if its a really loose fit this will probably explain the grinding you noticed.
To clarify, can you describe exactly where the exhaust is blowing from? Photos if available would be ideal :)

Ah, if its blowing and rattling from there then it won't be the gasket as that is further down the pipe...
I would guess that you may have the same issue as Paul mentioned above. There may be some lose debris (carbon deposits) in there so removing the exhaust and shaking it might get it out... but if its blowing then it may be time for a new can. OEM ones aren't expensive - only £10-20 on eBay or someone on the forums might have one for the cost of postage :)

My understanding is that the link pipe is fixed with a OEM one, where as usually they are separate on replacement ones, is that right?
Annoyingly mine is in good condition looks wise, especially in comparison to the ones on Ebay. I have enquired about one on the for sale & wanted section so maybe I'll get lucky.
In terms of replacing it, is it literally a matter of taking the old one off and fitting the new one? No extra work needed?

Yes, If you are replacing it 'like for like' you will be able to just swap them over. Just make sure it's seated nicely where it joins and clamps together.

You may find that you can stop it blowing by sealing the joint with clear silicon.
Won't stop it rattling of course.
Mine looked absolutely perfect, even though it was blowing. I never tried the silicon repair on it, but I have used it on a Beamish 350 trials bike and it worked fine.

did you ever solve this? i too have to same problem and been looking at finding a solution, i bought a replacement exhaust off ebay but it too had the same thing mine had, some people think its made that way and others think its a fault that develops?

Hi, no, not really. I ended up leaving it. did manage to get some crap out of the area which stopped the rattle. The blowing is still there but it went through its MOT last year so I left it. Am contemplating putting some of the sealing silicon on it shortly. Long term plan is to potentially replace the downpipes and exhaust in one go so am hoping it will last till then.

thanks for the response, i might actually pull out the one i bought off ebay, which when fitted still blew but was in worse condition than my old one so put my old one back on, and try sealing it with the silicon and give it a go for a while? so if it improves any?

Is it definitely the end can that's blowing ? It could have rotted out inside which would also give the rattle, I have dozens of standard cans. Also just get the bike running and get it warm then feel for the blow by running you hand around the pipe - WITHOUT TOUCHING IT. if the end can is rotting out then its a sure sign that your downpipes (if original) are not far behind just feel underneath on the 4-2-1 collector and make sure it's not blowing there.

Deffer666 - yeah definitely blowing out of that gap where the black pipe goes into the end can. i have had a look over the down pipes and although not in the best condition they are pretty good.
The end also looks in great condition just this blowing from the gap in my picture. checked it last night before riding home from work and again when i got back.
With out actually being able to take it apart its hard to tell whats going on inside, although as i said before i know pretty much nothing about engines or bikes as such, so any advice or info is always greatly appreciated. bearing in mind it is a 98 model so its getting on a bit now and no idea how many parts are still original.

Yeah i posted on that thread about mine also, the blowing is annoying but not major but wasnt sure if it had any impact on the bike having a vibration/buzz patch at 5k+RPM, a few people have said its just a Fazer thing, but once i enter the 5K RPM range it just buzzes/vibes from there? with no end no matter how far i push her.
