Just wondering if anyone has used vegetable oil to lube their chain?? I normally used engine oil but i run out last week so i thought i would give it a try! just been over a week now & normally with engine oil it would of sounded as if it was dry by now but with the veggie oil it still feels smooth & sounds really quiet. Am i risking my chain because its not a proper oil???
What are your thoughts guy's??

I wouldn't use vegetable oil.
Far too unhealthy
Seriously.
You'll end up with a fat bike. :b

cow shits not bad
Sorry fizzy.....you lose....not a foodstuff. :(
You need to think more along the lines of.......left over curry sauce......honey.........squeezy cheese etc etc!
-
All jokes aside Ray....veg oil cant be good for a bike chain...i mean i know it has a high flash point but it is so thin it must be gone after a few miles.
-
The chain was still wet when i checked it tonite, a week after i first decided to try it. i shall give it a couple of weeks to see what happens :)
-
A friend of mine always used chain saw lube as it was far cheaper than motorbike chain lube. This was on his CB250 and it worked well.

You were risking it much more with used engine oil as it has a high acid content and not good for the O-rings, used engine oil is only useful for burning to heat garages, fresh vegetable oil has to be an improvement. :) It is fresh is it?
Would not fancy getting it on my rear tyre though. :rolleyes
-
Yeah, it's fresh! Well,out of date fresh :D :D
-

Is this how u lube Ooooo ring pieces then
-
Yeah, it's fresh! Well,out of date fresh :D :D
be aware veg oil only has 10 frys before it becomes toxic :eek
yank my chain
-
It is fresh it's only been in the chip pan for a month :lol
I suppose it's better than nothing. Must admit it's the first time I've heard it mentioned!
-
Just run up the engine on the centre stand, stick her in top gear with the revs on, then rub a block of lard on the rear sprocket coating it liberally.
When the lard gets hot, it melts and lubricates, and when you stop it hardens again!
It's a revelation in chain lubing!
Oh god, I hope no-one tries this........ :o:o:o:o:o:D:D:D:D???
-
On an unrelated note, I noticed my engine oil was low the other day. I checked the garage but I had no engine oil there to top it up with. The closest thing I could find was Diet Coke. This won't harm the bike will it? :rolleyes

Tried & tested mate, I thought I'd do it at the same time as I was scrubbing in my new back tyre by holding sandpaper up to it. Kill two birds with one stone and all that. ;)

another quick question, do people find they get better results balancing their carbs with a long or a short spirit level?
-
Can't believe people are puttin this stuff on their chains,, and we wonder why there is so much slippery shit lying about on the roads, as if spilt diesel isn't bad enuff !! Thank god I don't hav to follow or ride on the same roads that your on !
-
I find it more important to get a good balance of carbs, protein and veg. Don't forget a bit of chocolate and beer, food for the soul...
-
I thought this was going to be a lube V wax thread. I've wanted to try wax but I just keep staying with what I know!
-

I just use a 6 inch ruler, measuring down from the frame.
-
I wouldn't use KY jelly on your chain makes it too stiff!!

And make sure its on the centre stand

I only use KY when I'm hard up :P

I'd just like the opportunity to use some KY :(

I rub my new tyres over with wet n dry, you look less stupid doing that than going arse over tit because of the 'release agent' that's sprayed on new tyres.
-
I've been using oil of olay on my chain. I find it helps fight the seven signs of aging

I'm not even sure if you got the answer you were looking for - but with a question like that it's just all too easy to go off on a mini rampage hehe.
Anyway, I think the response basically adds up to 'no, don't do it'

Vegetable oil is better than nothing, but its viscosity is only about 20% of that of engine oil. Probably best not to use it on a long term basis, but it'll be better for lubricating a chain than WD40.
-
I have just seen a dog licking his chain :eek
Surely this thread is an April fools thread,,a bit early :)

Being serious now, I had a mk2 Golf GTD that happily ran on Veg oil (back when it was actually cheaper than diesel), so I'd agree that veg oil is far too thin to use as chain lube.
My mrs said everywhere I went I left the smell of a chip shop. :D
-
I was using it temporarily :D but i'm looking to make my own oiler as i think that scottoiler's are a bit pricey!
-
It's a doddle making your own oiler, done it a few times on my work bikes for absolutely diddly squat!
-
If you don't want to at the prices Scottoiler charge, it's worth looking at Loobman oilers.
Check the website out, have had one before and work fine, does the job and cheaper.
Had planned on buying one when looking to buy the Fazer, but didn't need to as the Fazer I ended up buying had a scottoiler already fitted.

Chopped onions, minced beef, and some fresh chillies, once applied on your chain and you get up to the legal speed limit, any vehicles following you will turn off at the nearest town because they can smell Nando's. :b

Oh no! Not chopped onions? They give me the Shiite's :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin
Will have a look at the Loobman oiler

Try rubbing banana skin on your chain it's mega slippy although I've never slipped on one
