I may have cocked up. I have bought an FZ1. It is still in Scotland with Neil the guy I bought it from.
My question is this I may have fallen foul of the DVLA. Neil had the FZ1 on SORN. I officially became the new keeper on the 3/2/14. I did not know that a SORN is not transferable. I will not be taxing the bike until next month as I am in Spain and the FZ1 is in Scotland at Neils. I have been playing on the DVLA website checking how I tax the bike online etc! To cut a long story short I entered the bikes details and it flagged up the bike was unlicensed /not taxed which I knew. Thought I would check up about it being on SORN and that is when I found out that a SORN was not transferable. I have the V5 so thought I would get it on SORN again, which I have now done. I was informed by a generic message that I have commited an offence by not having the bike taxed or on SORN as the new keeper. I now may have to pay a fine and also pay back tax for a road fund licence.
Checked the FAQ section on the DVLA site concerning SORN
This is one of the FAQ's and an answer.
I am buying a vehicle and the previous keeper has already declared SORN. Do I have to do anything?
A SORN is not transferable from one keeper to another so you must make a SORN or tax the vehicle if you going to use or keep the vehicle on the public road.
So can I use the excuse that I currently do not intend to use or keep the vehicle on a public road as it is in a private garage?
Any advice appreciated thanks

SORN it and stop worrying!

As above and don't worry about it because it has not been on the public road- they would have to prove by means of photographic evidence that it had been!

Just phoned the DVLA about this SORN malarkey, no fine to pay seeing as I do now have the bike on SORN and as 4 months has not passed since I became the registered owner. |So that is a relief, Just incase anyone else needs to check up if they are in hock to HMG/DVLA the fines section number is 0300 790 6813
