Break or mend?
I've just read a bunch of threads on here, where exactly the same thing seems to have happened. Second gear is fooced. End of. I can only get first and neutral.
I think I killed my gearbox, specifically 2nd. I remember a really evil-sounding gear change a couple of weeks ago (when i should have got it checked out, I know) and it's been slipping out of second since and has just been generally unreliable. There's been a couple of times when it's lost the gear completely, with some gritty clanking sounds when I loosen the clutch. I knew something was wrong, but having only had it serviced a couple of months ago my wallet was leading my decisions rather than my brain.
So, I need to make a decision as to what to do with my FZS 600 (2001).
Do I:
Remove engine, open crank case, fix gear .... limited knowledge of these things but have the help of a mate who's done it before.
Or, buy new engine, replace myself and just get on with it
Or, break, sell and buy a thou, which is kind of what i want to do anyway? Don't think i'd get much for it broken though.
P.s. This is a small tragedy to me. I've had so much fun on that bike for the last 2.5 years. Have owned a few mid-range bikes and this was by far the most fun to ride and had the most character.

Personally speaking, I'd go for the fix it option, but be prepared to spend money where you don't expect to, eg, on the stretch bolts holding the crank cases together and the various seals and gaskets you (well, I anyway) always overlook when mentally pricing a repair.

Ask deefer if he can fix it for you & how much.
I believe he has much experience with fixing them or at least fitting a new engine.
Apart from that there seems to be quite a few fazer rescuers around these parts but usually these types are a bit rough...is it a nice bike apart from that???

The infamous jumping out of 2nd gear, I have done this one loads of times. Its not a serious enough fault to make it worth junking a good bike for as most of the value is in the engine. PM me if you want a quote for repair.

It's ok visually. Had a drop that cracked a bit out of the fairing but turned my hand to some plastic pouring and it wasn't as bad as i thought it. What's so annoying is that it was mechanically so sound until now. Literally on the button every time. But that said, if i wanted to keep it in good nick i'd have to replace the original downpipes fairly soon. They pretty much dissolve in my hands when I try and clean them. It's got a micron carbon can and renthals but apart form that, as standard.

Personally I'd either get it repaired, or replace the engine :) Replacing the engine is a little less hassle in the short term and can be done in a weekend fairly easily. If you want to, you can then set about repairing the old engine

Revilo, did you fit the renthals yourself? I've got a set to stick on this weekend, was just wondering how you went on with routing cables/cable lengths? Did the renthals go straight on with no probs?

I've fitted Renthals (758's) to my 600 and the cable routing really isn't an issue - its a fairly straight forward and simple job :)

Cheers dead eye. Dunno what number mine are, I think they're called street flats and are the ones with the least rise and as wide as I could get without ordering the streetfighter ones which were a tenner more if I remember right. Had em down the side of me bed gathering dust for a while now, just waiting for a bike to stick em on.

Yup, I can do that job in my sleep now. I have lost count of how many Fazers I have done that job on, even my local yamaha dealer passes them onto me

Renthals were fairly straight forward. Only tricky bit is drilling the hole for the plastic studs from the controls to sit in. Measure twice or drill twice as I did.

Anybody want to buy it off me? It's got 22k on the clock (FFS!!) and is in good nick other than the downpipes. Few scuffs on the bodywork and a repaired front fairing. Oh and the gearbox is busted. I'm open to offers.

Bollocks! It ain't a full strip FFS the engine doesn't even need to come out of the frame. Sounds to me like your garage dontr know what they are doing

Fazers are famous for a dodgy second gear.
Isnt the problem a shift shaft spring like on the GenII's?

Nope, its normally caused by people running the chain too tight or resting their foot on the gear lever when riding.

Deefer, he had the cover off the clutch and showed me the petals etc. Everything in there was fine. We emptied the oil, not too bad, no bits.... stuck a little rod into the sump and no bits either. He's fairly experienced (rides a Fazer 600 himself). He said the next bit of investigation would need the engine out - he full of sh*t? He reckoned it was a bent selector fork - is there a way to get to these without splitting the case.
And my chain wasn't too tight, but maybe the foot thing though. I am lanky.

If the selector fork was bent then it would get lodged between the row of gears. The selector is "worn" nothing more. The fact that there was no swarf in the oil is a good thing although if there was it would be in the filter for the gauze on the bottom on the oil scavenge pipe. Its safe to ride at the moment but you will have to avoid 2nd as much as possible (changing up twice from first).

Sorry Deefer - I haven't been clear. It won't go into second, but it also won't go past second or anywhere near third. I have first and neutral only.. ... i.e. there's something physically jamming it from going up into second. It simply doesn't budge - even with the engine off, rolling the bike back and forward a bit..... truly fubar.

How about replacing the engine? Bozboz isn't that far from you, and I think he's still considering selling his.

Ahhh I thought it was the jumping out of second, then yes by it probably needs stripping out. Still not a scary job

However, without a car (I live in London) it's all going to be a bit of a nut-ache. If I could find a friendly van driver who wants to earn a few extra quid, but who won't strip my wallet bare, to take me to see Deefer, all would be well!
Thanks Deefer - I didn't really describer the problem first time very well. When I first turned up at the garage he said 'it's your selector spring' without even looking at the bike and I had to say 'no, it's fucking not'.
Will keep you posted as to what I do. I sat on the bus like a zombie this morning and it hurt my soul.
