Title: unreliable 98.
Post by: Lumpy on 03 February 2014, 08:10:28 am
The unreliability of modern motorcycles is appalling, in recent weeks my 98 (modernish) has had a plug cap fail, throttle cables go stiff, fuel pump pack up, terminal corrode under the tank for the ignition switch, wire break off the fuel tank sender, and indicator switch stop. All this seem to have happened when the 95 000 miles clicked over  :lol , bloody unreliable heap.

The number of worn parts I've had to replace beggars belief…. discs, pads, drivechains/sprockets, tyres, suspension/steering bearings, downpipes, centrestand, carbs, engine*, the fuel tank rusted through… and to cap it all, it actually broke down once!
All this in just 15 years and 158,000 miles. It's a disgrace.
I thought it was just me, but if others have been having trouble too we should group together and demand compensation from Yamaha.
These big companies only respond to litigation and if we don't fight them they'll keep ripping us off with shoddy rubbish like this.

* (Well, OK, perhaps I should only put that down as cam chain, but I was too lazy to investigate and had a cheap replacement motor available.)

I've replaced the wheels and bearings, and will recoat the originals, the discs a few times, the rear caliper for a Fazer thou one, I have some forks in rebuild as the originals are loose to say the least, changed the bars, the seat, neither were overly necessary but stock bars are shit, the engine after the original exploded, headlamp and tail light bulbs. Fuel pump, starter solenoid, usual tyres and pads obviously and oil and filters.

Bloody marvellous really, apart from the engine explosion
