Hi guys,[/size] i quick question to pose. To service or not to service, that is the question?I serviced my beloved Fzs600 April last year. I Changed the oil, Oil filter, Plugs, and thoroughly cleaned the K&N filter. I have done approximately 2,000 miles since,on virtually perfect weather days. I know fair weather rider but i'm asking peoples opinion on weather to do a full, part or no service before popping over to the Isle of Man this year. I'm not being lazy and don't mind servicing it myself, but is it really worth going to the trouble knowing the bikes only done small mileage in perfectly dry weather. What do you think? [/color]

Oil and oil filter change. Nothing else. Though you could do even with the old oil, at least for another 2 - 3 thousand kilometers.

Personally I think servicing on that low mileage is overkill but if you really feel the need I would leave untill after the trip. Otherwise you'll service before then question whether to service after, having done another couuple thou miles there and back (i presume)

As for the answer, leave well alone, if nothing is chafing, squeaking or squealing then the jobs a good'un, you're ready to go.
You can check the levels of oil, air and coolant for peace of mind and make sure the pads have enough life in them, and also give the chain a good lube AFTER a run and make sure the tension/alignment is correct, otherwise go and enjoy the stormy weather. :)

You obviously want to, otherwise why would you ask? Remember a service is not just changing consumables. It is also checking and adjusting everything. Do that. And do an oil and filter change if it will make you happier going on your trip knowing your machine is good. I would ALWAYS service my bike before a big trip, even if nothing needs changing. Its Easier to torque up nuts and lube cables at home than at the side of the road. ;)

I have a similar dilemma. I bought my bike last week and it came with no service paperwork. It rides very well as is but I'm thinking a basic service wouldnt hurt and I'll have a date/mileage on which to set other services by...

Whenever Ive had a "new" bike I have always started from scratch with the servicing/safety checks however well cared for the bike appeared. Some things like brake hoses/seals/fluid & coolant hoses tend to be forgotten but have a definite service life. Best to start at front tyre & work back checking everything including torque settings of fasteners. You will have a datum point for all future service jobs & peace of mind which is a good way to start your holiday trip! :lol

I've no idea how the original post/question came out so small, but thanks to whoever made it readable. Good job.
The feed back i get is to just concentrate on the oil and oil filter, and to obviously check the rest of the bike. The reason asked is that I want the bike to be functional and reliable without taking the bike apart for no reason. You could call it Risk / reward benefit. The trusty stead is a great specimen and rarely gets taking out in the bad weather and is always stored in my garage.
I'm quite new to riding and don't have the knowledge and experience some of you old hast have but i'm learning and enjoying

2000 mile oil and filter can do another 1000 - 2000 before change, especially if it's a long trip - not stop and go, lots of short rides city traffic. So you can change oil and filters after the tour - not sure how many miles you intend to ride.
Just check everything is OK on the bike. Tyres, suspension, chain, sprockets, brake pads, levels of all the liquids. Oh, one more thing - brake fluid - if it's over 2 years old, change it if you plan riding and braking hard.
