FZS600 headlights. Rubbish! Sharks, Great!
So having dabbled with setting the rhs to do dual beam, then upgrading the halogens to Osram Nightbreaker, then moving to HID, i'm still not moved by the headlights. Whilst so far, HID has been the best of the bunch, the light is rather spattered everywhere with very little control.
So i bought a spare headlamp assembly, with the intention to start trying projectors. I spoke to a company in the Netherlands about a loom, and they think that good projectors wont fit without a little modification to the headlamp. So i've sent them the headlamp. They are going to do the fitting including any modifications that need to be made. This way, they can offer a kit complete with any modifications, specifically for the 98-02 box eye.
Mistake #1. Box was a little large and i got clobbered on the postage as it put the weight to just over 2kg. Under 2kg would have been much cheaper.
Anyhow, if you want to see sme of their work, this is a z750-z1000 headlamp that they had to make a custom kit for:
Kawasaki Z750 (07-12) Z1000 (07-09) Bi xenon projector retrofit Mini H1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-cafPauWso#ws)
Step 1 completed - Send headlamp unit away.
-
will follow this thread closely
-
Me too, I will follow this thread with interest!
Will the projectors be designed to work with HIDs, halogens or both?
-
H1 hid. The hi/lo is handled by the projector
-
I dropped my Dutch contact an email, to let him know they were on the way to him (budget cheapest royal mail i could, i was already getting stung for the weight... anywhere between 3-8 days before it arrives there).
I also asked about the adjustability of the projectors - if a custom bracket has to be made, would the lights still be adjustable, or would it be a case of opening up the headlamp, shimming the projectors accordingly then resealing them.
Just had his reply:
"Hi Darren,
Okay, look forward to receive it. As for the adjusters, they will still work!"
So thats nice :)
I'll let you know what i have asked for him for...
2x Mini H1 bi-xenon v6 projectors, LHD for UK
Any shroud that he thinks will look good and will fit (probably mini gatling gun)
LED Angel Eyes in white (these will appear with a yellow tint when not on and bright white when on). These will be connected to the sidelight 'p' position, but i may fit an inline switch so i can choose to have them on or not when the lights are on. These should be bright enough to provide a bit of close range lighting.
Loom, so i can fit the ballasts under my seat with a direct connection to the battery, and a relay controlled by my H4 connector to operate the on/hi/lo for both projectors.
Stage 2 complete. Remember to let them know theyre on the way, and a list!
-
Stuck with the original single headlight on my Boxeye but have upped my intake of fresh carrots ;)
-
What is the cost....
-
Dunno. I only sent the headlights today. What's the cost of not being able to see?
The angel eyes will bump the price up, as I've asked for the xb-led. Ccfl angels cost less, and not having any at all even less! But I already have hid stuff so I'm not paying for bulbs or ballasts.
I'm going to look at under seat mounting options for the ballasts. Space isn't an issue as all my crap goes in the givi box. Will probably knock up a mounting plate or summat. There'll be room. Currently I have them bonded to the inside of the fairing sides but would prefer more weather resistance.
-
It is quite embarrassing when you get these little scooters heading towards you with the brightest of lights as standard, and yet ours can't even light the eyes of a cat up, even after upgrading the bulbs. :(

I remember when i picked this bike up, it was dark, i was riding on a fairly major 'A' road, but scooters were passing me because i just couldnt see a goddam thing. I stopped several times just to check the lights were actually on!
-
Just found this, they mention mods using lights off a 400 or a 1000?
What went wrong with the 600 then, did the light man take the week off sick? :rolleyes

How is the light upgrade progressing??
They offer discounts if we buy a certain amount as
A club or forum. But how good are the the
Projectors ?
-
I've been quite ill this week so haven't followed up at all. I would assume snail mail has delivered my parcel by now. Yes, they do a 'group buy' option.
Attached image is a bmw car running the same projectors... although thats like comparing apples to oranges
-
I wonder if they'd do halogen projectors?
Might be a cheaper option for some who don't necessarily want HIDs.
-
I dropped a follow up to check they ha arrived, got reply
Hi Darren,
Yes they’ve arrived safely! And I’ve already been working on them this week, opened them up and designed the brackets already on the computer. Now the files are at the steel constructing company which fabricates them for me, they should be here within 2 weeks so then I hope to give you an update! J
Kind regards / Met vriendelijke groet,
So I don't expect to hear anymore for a few weeks, which isn't a bad thing as I'm out of monies anyway and that'll be near payday for me.
-
Regarding cost, I can only speculate and make a guess that the cost for a kit would be similar to their z1000 kit, which contains
Projectors
Bulbs
Ballasts
Wiring harness with relays
Shrouds
Rubber dust caps
Custom brackets/plates for fitting
2yr warranty
Which is £178 depending on the strength of the pound against the euro (215 euro)
But that's just my guess. I will of course, try and push for a good discount for foccers, they are aware that there's a lot of interest from an owners group forum ;)
-
Yes, I'm pretty interested in this and would pay that price if it's as good as it seems. Been looking at their website & vids from their current and old "Motorsticker" website and am impressed.
-
Following with interest :)
-
I know you've been tied up with other things recently Dcurzon, but any news yet regarding the headlights? Been eagerly returning to the thread for updates! :)
-
My last update was that the custom back plates had been done and all fitted perfect, but I've been off work for a bit so haven't touched base recently. I had also told the fella that I'm in no rush so he's been doing it as a side project an putting his paid work first
I'm back at work Monday so will follow up then :-)
-
Ah, okay thanks, glad I haven't missed a new thread or something as been away from the forum for a bit. Will keep the thread bookmarked :)
-
Interesting thread.
My Fazer has this on, with a bright phillips bulb, and it thoroughly outdoes the stock lights. My mate with a Honda Hornet was annoyed the other day, because it was brighter than his bike too.

-
Followed up, reply:
Hi Darren,
I’m working on headlights again tomorrow and my estimate is that we can finish your headlight this week, so it will arrive probably at the end of next week! J
Kind regards / Met vriendelijke groet,
As i've previously pointed out, i'm in no hurry and the fella is fitting this around his paying customers work (although admittedly i thought it'd be done by now). At least it should mean that an all in one DIY kit will be readily available :)

I drive a 3 series and ride a foxeye 600, what does this make me? Lol

Update - parcel arrived, complete with loads of loom. I'm going to have to try to make head/tails of the wiring...
12v for the angel eyes will come off the sidelight.
12v from the battery to the ballasts
Light wiring to trip the relay for lights on/off
High beam wiring to trip the hi/low
Shouldnt be too much trouble if i'm honest. Other than not much room to move in the garage and trying to find some time. I'll probably wire them up 'off the bike' initially.
-
Get on it and get some pics up :)
-
Watching with great interest! :)
-
Fairing off, headlights fitted, tested all 'off bike'
I'm indecided wether to use their loom or not.
Advantage - it runs straight from battery and will use the stock connector just for tripping the relay = good clean power.
Disadvantage - theres a lot of loom! It's well made though.
I think I'll keep their loom in the drawer and just hook up from stock connectors. We'll see, time isn't an issue
-
These look really good - cannot wait to see them in action

To be honest mate, with how old the headlight wiring will be now, I'd probably bypass it and go straight to the battery for the best power possible.
That said, I'm pretty certain the draw from HID's is actually lower than the standard headlight bulbs, so you might well be okay.
Or, if time really isn't an issue, rewrap the loom, taking out the old headlight wires?
-
Fairing and light unit fitted more or less, still got the bits that the mirrors bolt onto to fit.
Angel's both wired up
I'm going to use the rhs for tripping the hi/lo, for now I've just pushed the wires into the h4 socket, I need to get a couple of h4 male's, 1 for the hrs for hi/lo, and the other for connecting the lhs to the relay.
Late night and a flat battery stops play
-
Jump started from the car, still only temporarily wired up as swmbo is whining about time I'm spending in the garage... About 1.5hours this week...

Time actually worked out to not be on my side, with a tube strike and a few issues at home to contend with.
So I'm going to order some 2way amp connectors and sort the wiring out another time, should be a doddle but would rather wait until I have the connectors that I want.
So I've wired thus:
Both halos
Left light dipped beam
Right light dipped and full beam
I'll take some night time shots against a garage door later
-
Arrrggghh, I'm blind! Nice work, thought about getting this done on my foxeye

They're complete kit for the z750/z1000 is 215€ that's everything - 2yr warranty, bulbs, ballasts, looms, modified plate etc, so I'd expect it to be a similar ball park. I won't disclose what I paid, but I already had bulbs and ballasts anyway

How did you get the flash/pass button to work?
I wired mine up so the main beam flipped the solenoid as you did, but this just resulted in a 'click' from the solenoid if the headlights weren't switched on already.
Moot point for me really, as I'm going back to standard.
Stupid EU rules. Auxiliary driving lights, here I come!
-
Hmm, I've not tried the flash button... Not too worried about that either - most of my riding is city
-
I'd imagine wiring like that to the solenoid is correct, but you'd also need that to feed the light / ballast to make the light illuminate too.
This is all very we'll but it's pretty useless with HIDs anyway as they generally need time to warm up as such anyway, it'll flash briefly even with the lights off but be more effective with the lights on, however generally you should ride with light on for visibility anyway, I guess riding with just the angel eyes on would be appealing because of how they look, through.
-
Flash to pass works fine from lights off or on. But as above, it's not great for HID's to flash on and off.
Look at cars that have projectors (where the car has seperate high beam light and low beam light), the high beam is always a halogen.
-
Yeah, prime example my bmw has projector xenons, but they don't flash, the halogen main beam flashes

You can see on the vid how the HID's start out very blue then after about 10 seconds of warm up they're much whiter.
Having already gone down the various paths of enabling low beam on the rhs, then upgrading to Osram Nightbreakers, then fitting HID bulbs, and finally going to projectors, i am now happy with the light performance. I just need to tweak the alignment, maybe up a smidge.
Most of my riding is in London, but, getting there is unlit Essex country roads for about 12 miles. Not so bad now we're in BST admittedly.
I did take some footage of the lights on said country roads, but i accidentally overwrote it...

Where do the projectors stand legally? Sorry I know this has cropped up before but my searching abilities are letting me down.

Where do the projectors stand legally? Sorry I know this has cropped up before but my searching abilities are letting me down.
Last time I looked into it - aftermarket hid kits were illegal, unless fitted in a proper projector headlight unit with an auto balancing/levelling unit, and there was also a requirement for headlight washers too.
Admittedly, this was for its use in a car, and not specifically on a bike, but I would imagine the legislation carries over?
-
S'far as I'm aware, it was stated as specifically for a car. No such legislation in place for bike.
(I have my standard lights just in case)
-
They look amazing - any idea of a price for the kit?
-
Hello guys, this is Wouter from Retrofitlab, I developped the kit for this bike.
This kit is not yet on our website but we will add it in the near future. Darren told me that some of you were interested in this kit. We could set up a groupbuy for this kit and ship all the kits to one address to save on shipping costs as well.
Normally the price of this kit will be around € 215 ex shipping which is about 180 GBP.
We are willing to give 2% discount per participant, up to 20%!
Please reply when interested, so that we can get this thing started :-)
The kit is available of course for left and right hand drive.
-
Great news Thanks for the update
-
Looks great this, what the Fazer should have had from the factory. Am tempted
-

To be honest, I wish I'd gone down this path at the beginning rather than dick around with bulbs etc. the difference, excuse the pun, is night n day.
It might seem steep but consider what you're getting, from a reputable company, with decent warranty, and it's a bloody good investment. If you get 9-10 for a group buy then it's an absolute steal at <£150.
-
I'm interested although not sure when I'll have the cash. If someone could give me a dummies guide to wiring them I would be pretty much guaranteed to get this kit.
-
Don't post here often but consider me interested too! Almost shat myself on woodhead pass unlit a while back with the nightbreakers in. I'd really like clarification of the legality of this though, I'd hate to be pulled over and have the bike taken :/
-
The bike wouldn't ever get taken, worst case you'd have an improvement order or something.
Tbh they can't really do anything, can hardly tell, so many cars and bikes have xenons these days, if they're behind projectors like these the beam will be controlled and not scattered. They'll be absolutely fine.
I'd love some for the fox eye but at the moment other priorities with money are around, looking into buying my first house next year so saving money is a must at the moment!
-
So a few people are interested, do you guys think we could get to 5?! :-)
-
I've just spent a couple of hours fitting Wouter's loom, it's made it a much neater install.
Relay bolted to the horn mount on the left, with the trigger connected to the left light fitting.
I put the ballasts behind the battery section and ran the extension cables nicely under the tank.
12v feed for high beam taken from the rhs light fitting.
Job jobbed! I've lost the 'flash to pass', unless the lights are switched on anyway (they usually are), but has made a nicer install and a better power source, and I now have dual high beam.
Will grab some video footage tonight when it gets dark.
Wouter - some feedback for you - make the ballast to bulb extensions 12" longer then the ballasts would comfortably fit in the luggage section under the seat. Also, the H1 bulb used by the fazer seems to have a h4 or h7 connector (not sure which) so I had to make a connection rather then plug n play.
-
has anyone taken this mod through an MoT. If so, can I have the number of the MoT centre so that I can get mine done there. A lot of cash (£180) if they fail an MoT - too much hassle to swap out just for an MoT and anyway, I wouldnt ride with anything not Road Legal.
-
i`ve found that sorting the wiring so both lights work on main + dip together (both lights on) seems to be fine using 90 / 130 bulbs
although i do find that having a cd player heater and arm rest much more comfortable at night and a hell of alot safer ;) ;)

Mot'd just fine

Not entirely sure what you trying to say here buddy... Nonsense thread? Hmmm... one of the biggest gripes i read about is the poor (actually, dangerous) stock headlights on the boxeye. So does someone actually getting off his arse to do something about them make this nonsense? I dont know. I do know that the nights will be drawing in soon enough, and i'll be able to see where i'm going, without having to rely on tailgating a vehicle that has decent headlights :D

I meant.... if it isn't a legal modification (in relation to roadworthiness) then the price tag is a hefty one that can be added to a fixed penalty and points endorsement on ones licence not to mention the potential to affect law abiding road users. Only an idiot would thus implement this mod or... Are we now recommending members ride illegally and potentially affect other road users by means of unroadworthy modifications.. This hasn't even considered insurance company views. And if this is trolling then you arguably only serve to demonstrate to others Your disregard and maturity on what is a serious issue. All I was asking us for the name and contact number of the MOT centre that deemed this roadworthy. It's not just about your safety but also the safety of other road users who may find themselves on the wrong side of these wonderful and exciting illuminations.
Of on the other hand VOSA/DVSA accepted this through their test then all is well. But there is no evidence of this yet and to my mind I feel the danger side of this mod needed to be brought out although referring to individuals implementing this as idiots may on reflection been harsh without providing the rationale, which I have now done and using my own experience of these ...'great mods'. Please be careful and considerate when modifying and always think safety!
By the way my lights with osram EU and CE approved bulbs are adequate. I have no problem.. nor do other road users . could be better though but we are taking a 14 yr old bike so the performance is upto 2014 standards albeit legal which is more than the emissions output was in 2003 :lol
I just got a sweet spot around all safety issues - I work in a safety engineering - organisation and naturally think of safety, and how our actions can impact on the safety of others - that's all.

Thanks for the feedback Darren! Will definitely add that length, we're having a new batch manufactured pretty soon. You're right about the connectors. Most bikes use H7 bulbs, at this time we only have H7 connectors on the wire harnesses, but in the future we will also add other connectors, or adapters to our product line.

I'm not exactly sure what UK rules are, so can't really argue on that one. Here in the Netherlands it's no problem to have aftermarket xenon in your motorcycle, even if you do it the wrong way: xenon bulbs in halogen reflectors.
From your experience, I can really understand that you think these kind of 'great mods' is dangerous for other traffic. But in fact, this (projectors) is the only correct way to perform a xenon upgrade. If you would spend some time to study the characteristics of light sources, halogen and xenons, you would find out that these projectors generate the perfect beam pattern since they are designed for a xenon light source. There is absolutely no glare, making it 100% safe for other traffic.
Of course there are the authorities who might not like it, but are speaking from the same experience you probably have: xenon bulbs in headlights designed for a completely different light source. In fact I'm 100% sure that if these authorities would really take a proper look at beam patterns etcetera, they would have to conclude that there is nothing wrong with an upgrade like this. But the "boy racer HID car upgrades" (I like the way you put it :lol ) made things complicated.
Anyway. This evening I finished the video, uploaded it to Youtube, and the kit is available for order now on our website!

Great video
-
Is it just me or does anyone else have the same feeling that "something" is gonna foc up if i attempt to do this, whether it be breaking one of those little clips that need taking out with pliers, or just having trouble removing the sealed headlight unit? :'(
I get the impression it's worth buying a used headlight unit to work on so you can take your time and at least have your bike in working condition, then when all is well sell your old headlights on for the next person to try on, if they're in good enough nick.
-
Those plastic clips will not break very quickly, pretty good quality material.
But of course you could try it with a spare headlight. After finishing the headlight you can sell your original headlight, so you'll have no extra costs :)

It's just things like the heat gun (i presume) for instance which most people aren't gonna have to hand..
The video's great and really informative, but i sense that it wasn't their very first attempt at it, which for everyone else it would be.
-
That's right, we've done it a lot of times. If you do not have a heatgun, you can use your oven as well. Yes I would say that for 95% of our customers it's their first time opening a headlight, and I can tell you that a lot of people have succesfully opened and retrofitted headlights which are a lot harder than this headlight. This one really is not so hard.
If you want you can also send us your headlight and we can perform the retrofit for you completely. http://www.retrofitlab.com/retrofit-service.html (http://www.retrofitlab.com/retrofit-service.html)

I was wondering if there was that option, that's good to know, thanks. :)

Quality video. Great, if you have the money...
Cheap option.
Yesterday I baked my headlight unit in the oven (20 minutes at 70 degrees C). I did this a couple of years ago, but this time I was fitting 10k HiD units upon reassembly. I also sealed the unit to stop any water ingress. I have not had it out on the road yet, but its working :thumbup
Here is a couple of pictures.
-
I don't mean to sound pessimistic, more realistic, i can just imagine some people having a headlight chocolate cake and thinking "Oh foc!" :o
-
More impressive pictures though......it's gonna have to be done. :)

Unless your a chef, use a timer. I can't stress this enough. An independent thermostat too.The one built in to the oven won't even be close.

Incidentally, another great mod is to uprate and shorten your headlight wiring, and then use relays being tripped by the original wiring to turn the lights on.
Apparently a 10% voltage drop from battery to light can cause as much as 30% reduction in brightness.
I checked my setup out before and after this mod and I was getting just over 11V at the headlight. 3V lost!! It's because the thin, poor quality wiring needs to go from the battery, to the switches on the handlebars, back to the loom and then out to the headlights. And then BACK again!
So I wacked a big fat cable (Slightly smaller than the main battery cables, I wanted headroom for extra lighting!) from the battery (via a 30A Maxi Fuse) to the front fusebox. In there I had 2 relays which, through various routings, mimic the operating of the standard setup, and then carried 2 more not so fat (but still way fatter than standard) cables to the headlights. The relays are operated by the original lighting wiring that comes from the switchgear. But these crappy thin, corroded old wires no longer carry any real power.
Now, the headlights are getting a healthy 13.9V!! QUITE an improvement. So now my Osram Nightbreaker plus bulbs are running at FULL capacity and they are a lot brighter than with stock wiring. And to make sure, I popped on a spotlight between the forks with another nightbreaker in it!
You can see in this video that when it gets totally dark, I can actually see. And this is after I've gotten rid of the HID Projector headlight for EU reasons.
Skip forward to 14:45 if you just want to see the headlights in the dark.

thought your'd sold the Fazer mr page ?

Sadly, yes. But I've got shed loads of footage backlog from the good times! Plus the existing videos serve as a reminder of when I was happy!

I've got Andy's old bike "Polly" now and she's a dream. The lights are absolutely superb!

Hello David!
Glad to hear she's serving well! Unless you've changed the bulbs since you took her away from me, then a set of nightbreaker unlimited or Phillips extreme vision will yield yet further lighting improvements. I was sadly too poor/tight to replace like for like when the bulbs last went!
Keep her shiny!
