Title: Brake Disc Bolts
Post by: old son on 17 January 2014, 07:06:52 pm
Would it be OK to reuse front and rear disc bolts when I fit my new discs?
Thanks

Of course, unless they are damaged!

If your bike is your main transport and you can't afford to risk it being off the road then it would be worth investing in at least one set of replacement bolts. If everyting goes fine, you wont need them but if you do have a problem, it wont keep the bike off the road while you wait for them to arrive.

I'm fitting a rear disc. If I buy a set of bolts then I'll use the new ones. I heard somewhere that these bolts tended to stretch?? I'll remove them carefully and put some locktite on them before they go back. Thanks for your comments.

Use a properly fitting impact driver to remove them.

They WILL be seized and they WILL round if you don't.

... and heat to soften the original threadlock compound.

I wouldn't even try to remove them without an impact driver, mate. :)

Yes, but it is a great way of mangling all the bolts  :lol

No, the first five will be fine. Only the last bolt will be mangled, and it wont even be mangled as such, just smoothly rounded.

I was thinking of changing both front discs too!! I will try the rear this weekend, if the bolts get buggered I can still use the bike (but not the rear brake)lol

Just break the lock on each bolt before moving on to the next. Do not attempt to loosen or remove any bolt until all of them have been released, then if one gets focced up, you can just retighten the others and cary on riding until you have sourced replacement bolts.

Aye, I should know as I sheared one of my replacements bolts a few weeks back......still not fixed it......but wouldn't dare do what you suggest is to ride with a focced up bolt

Mark it dead center with a punch. Drill it using a left hand drill bit and a variable speed drill, start slowly and do not use the full revs of the drill, to fast and your likely to break the bit.
The heat from the drilling will soften the loctite and as you are drilling it will also slowly unscrew the bolt. I would start with about a 4mm bit

I'm too scared I do more damage, I have my bike mechanic coming round in the next day or so and he can use his silky skills to remove it....besides it may cost me more if I foc it up.

Understandable, but should be no problem to a good machanic.
Many are not aware of left hand drill bits, which the the job much easier.

Today has been a good day, rear disc and pads changed plus both front discs and pads changed. Used heat gun then impact driver then long bar. Every bolt undid as it should!

Today is maybe not to good. I fitted a Brembo disc to the rear and that is OK.

I fitted Armstrong Wavy discs to the front and they seem to have issues. They are OK with light pressure but as you apply pressure it seems as though the pads and being thrown around the callipers. There is a bit of a rattle and then almost a graunching noise as I apply more pressure. I can also hear a sort of whining from the discs and this noise gets louder as I apply more pressure.

It could be they need time to bed in. If that is not the cause then does anybody have any ideas what the issue might be?

If only Brembo made front discs for the Fazer :'(
May just be the bedding in process. My front EBC discs made some weird noises for the first 100 miles, still make weird noises, but not as bad as the first 100 miles.
The rear Brembo is as good if not better than the original and no weird noises :)
Did you fit the discs yourself and was the wheel surface where the disc is attached cleand off because if it was not the discs may not be on straight.

I did clean the surface where the disc is attached but I think I will try spinning the wheel against a fixed point to see if there is any run out. I doubt if there is because it would vibrate all of the time, not just under hard braking.

What pads did you use?

I have seen the Armstrong discs warped from new.....

Also, pads need to bed properly and this evidenced when there is a good marking of the discs fromn the pads.

Thanks, I have done about 60 miles so far. The chirping noise I get when braking reasonably hard is quite loud. Not very impressed so far!

Hi Sean

I also have the Armstrong wavey discs with EBC/HH pads and they are quite noisy in operation.  Mine have been like this for nearly 3 years.  This might be a feature of slotted wavey discs regardless of make ... I don't know but maybe others here can comment?

Provided you're not getting any pulsing at the lever, it's a reasonable bet that the new discs are true.

Cheers!

Mike

Hi Mike, no pulsing but it feels like the pads are dragging on the discs under heavier braking. I think it is settling down though. I must admit I preferred the standard discs.

Agreed, Sean.  Apart from being a bit lighter and looking more trick, I can't detect any advantage in day-to-day use and compared with the brakes on my 99 R1, I don't think there's any point in going with Armstrong wavy discs over standard.

Live and learn, eh? :)

I always wondered about pad wear on some of these wavy discs. Do they not cause more wear because the pad material is running over those shaped edges of the disc? I notice standard Kawasaki wavy discs aren't scalloped particularly deeply in from the edge and wonder if this is to avoid such issues. But I've never seen criticism of them for this reason, and so was assuming they were ok. Thinking of getting a set myself at some point, hence the interest.

If things don't improve you can buy mine!!!!
I got wavy discs on my ZX 10R and they are fantastic.

I've replaced front and rear discs with armstrong wavy's, sintered pads and hel braided lines and all bolt's to stainless .after an initial bedding in period everything has settled down nicely ..

I upgraded my brakes to 3 x Hel lines front and back, sintered pads and Brembo master cylinder....not tested it yet due to the shite weather we're getting here

Please note for the rear disc (FZS1000 01-05) you'll still need some of these (below) as the bolts listed above don't fit the rear disc:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400470035954?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400470035954?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649)

You'll have 6 bolts left over from the link that Luke posted... But buying the two sets combined still works out cheaper than buying a complete set for front and rear discs exclusively for the FZS1000.

Had a similar problem fitted new brake discs black shadow and new EBC HH pads then the bike developed really bad vibration problems when braking turns out after stripping the calipers off outside the hotel in the IOM two pistons we're sticking obviously the dust seals have failed so they at off to Powerhouse in Sheffield how do a caliper refurb service hopefully this will cure the problem!!!!
