Title: A tip for sun in your eyes
Post by: fazersharp on 17 December 2013, 03:10:25 pm
Having just got back in from a ride out with the low sun in my eyes I remembered what I used to do when I was out everyday. Get some black insulating tape and cover the bottom 1 inch of your visor do it as a straight line so it tapers off at the edges of the visor left and right, when shut you don't loose any visibility as no doubt your helmet has some sort of rubber upstanding in the middle anyway. But when you are at a junction and the sun is in your eyes lift the visor and the tape then acts like a peak on a cap and shades your eyes. Lift the visor up or down to suit.  Obviously only useful whilst stationary or slow moving

Do it round the top as well fella, then it acts as a peak when visor is closed and still doesn't restrict visibility!

Could do but it seems more in the way there and I can (with my helmet anyway) sort of look down a bit and get the top of the helmets visor hole do the job.
Your gonna end up with a burka visor

Thats not what the point of it is. With the tint you are still going to get the glare - direct sun. And with low sun and lots of deep long shadows tints are not a good idea

I wear an amber tint visor all year round and at night too. Improves contrast -especially in the wet and dark and cuts down glare if you are riding into the sun. And, it makes the world look happy and sunny even in february.

Couldn't disagree more, I have yet to find a helmet with flip tint visor adequate enough for a normal sunny day, let alone direct low level sun!
The 'non legal' tint visors do the best job but are hopeless for this time of year with such short daylight hours!

That depends on the level of tint which to be leagal is no use for the low sun in your face

come on dude lol a plod will always allow a dark visor in sunlight as they have said for long enough the law is wrong but to obstruct the visor with tape would be a lot worse in their eyes.
i have been stopped numerous times with my simpon lid with a dark visor  :evil :evil and not once was it for that but cos they wanted too lol never had any probs with them and never been done but i do use a normal visor at night  :lol

however eleccy tape on the visor no matter were it s will be seen as obstructing your view similar to those peeps that spray a face on etc etc
personal choice and lots of different views but ye pays ye money ye takes ye chance

Spose - but it aint in your feild of fiew when closed as its at the bottom in the lowest part of your visor scoop, and I already have a bit of rubber (part of the helmet ) there.
And it they are looking at me with a reason to stop they will not notice the thin bit of tape like they would an all over tint

Did mine last week, got 2 A4 sheets carbon fibre sticky back plastic off Ebay for £2.30 inc. postage, not been out in the sun as yet but I'm sure it will be good with a pair of shades.

I've always used an advertising strip on tge top of my visor. This Dumlop one is due to be changed soon. It looks to big but from the inside its perfect although the next one will wrap around the sides a bit more.

Was startint to think it was just me and was a bad idea
Thanks chaz that is exactly what I was on about, only not quite as deep as yours, so it was about the same as the coverage of your rubber bit in your helmet and so no loss of view when down

I have a couple of strips of electrical tape across the top of my visor as a sun-shield and it works pretty good, although on bright days it helps to have a pair of sunglasses to wear too.

There is nothing that I'm aware of in law which says you can't have tape like this, but there are restrictions on visors which don't permit sufficient light to pass through, hence why they say "track use only" or "not for road use" and why you're not allowed to use them after dark.

I'm not sure that tape on the visor is illegal as I've seen someone with something similar that had bikesafe branding on it. Might be wrong though

Can't say I've seen anything about not putting stickers on your visor. Pretty sure as long as it's not restricting your view there's no problem with it.
Same as dark visors, just carry a clear one too, and your ok.

Maybe the bikesafe branding one is just a sticker and not designed for that use

If you are stopped for a dark visor and it does not have the bs kitemark (which it wont) then carrying a spare clear wont get you off the dark visor charge.

On the dark visor issue my theory is that the only reason they do not allow it for daylight riding is that it will be a nightmare (pun) to police, especially in our latitude on the planet that gives long twilight and therefore endless appeals against how dark it was or needs to be before you have to put your clear one on. So its far simpler to just say no to dark visors full stop.
And I still don't get the law because you can ride with sun glasses because the law states that you can remove them. But you can lift up a visor just the same, yet they say "ah the visor is protection and should be in place. Yet you can buy open face helmets without protection.
Or is it like the direction indicators law that is - you don't have to have them, but if they are fitted they must work.
