Title: Winter hack
Post by: slimwilly on 16 December 2013, 06:54:29 pm
If you were going to buy a winter hack or general local runaround bike , not needing to be powerful or too smart , what would you come up with for around £500.00 ?

£500 bikes are few and far between nowadays!! Your looking at a non runner really unless you get lucky and find a desperate seller. :eek

Sounds like minor work and these bikes are very easy to work on. I fully restored my old one with my dad over a few weeks and it was faultless. We picked up a 30k mile engine that was very sweet for £150. Not a bad little bike either I liked mine a lot at the time, although if you are over 6 foot I would look elsewhere. Very cheap and economical to run and fairly fun to ride.

I had a GS500 a few years ago, and did the same, rebuilt it and rode it through the winter. Simple to work on, and run forever. I am over 6' tall, and did look a bit silly on it! Don't care, it was probably the most fun I had on two wheels, and was awesome on fuel! 70mpg ish :eek

If I wanted a sub-£500 winter hack I'd buy whatever came up over 125cc, regardless of what it was.

On Autotrader right now is a Suzuki GS250 with a long mot for £400.

Good shout! For that money you can't be too choosy - just keep an ear open and spread the word you're looking, someone may need a quick sell this timed of year!

Good luck fella, and don't forget the pics of the shitebox carefully selected and treated with care future commuter  :D

Yamaha FJ1200 that I bought from a local FB site as a project and made road legal for less than £500. Fitted new bars, repaired master clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder, fitted speedo and idiot lights, rewired front and rear lights, ali-welded broken crank case, replaced Ignition barrel, Fitted FZS blue spot calipers (not pictured) Fitted Acerbis hand guards (Not pictured) ..... I'm ready for winter!

I had a trawl through e bay last night and there were a number of bikes on for around the £500 mark one that took my eye was an XJ 600 1995 bike and taxed and MOT'd until April next year, check it out.

Now is the time to buy there are some right bargains out there at the moment ....if you have the cash. Of course taking on someone else's "project" invariably means days of putting right their bodges and half fixes, but if your brave enough and spanner friendly you can do a lot with very little dosh.

I'd buy a car lol
At Peterborough auctions last. Friday there were 02 plate astras going by the block for 100 quid, 04 and 05 runabouts making 4 -500 quid. If this winter is as long as the last one was and I commuted it would be bugger the bike once the snows coming down..

Not looking myself as I'm nursing a bust toe, so am off the bike for winter anyway, but if anyone else fancies a pop here it is:

It goes to show that you can find a runabout for £500 or less, on Saturday i thought that i could just jump on the bike for a spin ,,but with all that mud and wet roads it would of taken me three hours to clean the Fz1s again.

Where as with a second cheapo steed it could be done,,there sure are some cheap bikes out there.
I may visit our local auction as some bikes go through there at ridiculous cheap prices.
