Felt really greasy out there tonight, be careful folks
I found that out half an hour ago going slowly round a roundabout! :'( End result - gouged fairings, the right subframe is twisted (mirrors don't fold on ZXs), and the screen is cracked. Anyone know how to go about getting the council to pay for the dammage? Especially as where my bike slipped is a known area to locals (as I find out afterwards. :wall )

What with one thing and another, I'm pretty shaken up! Only 3 weeks of riding since my big smash, and a bike's gone down AGAIN! Shock only though, it came out of nowhere! As my tyres aren't the best, I was steering with my knees and weight, keeping the bike as upright as possible. Halfway round a roundabout where I was doing a 300 degree turn, at only about 5mph, the bike decides it no longer wants to grip. Splat.
Apparently, other vehicles have had trouble there. My landlord said that a Peugeot 206 lost the back end at the exact same spot a few days ago. When I told him which roundabout I'd fallen down on, he knew to within about a foot where I was. That is bloody unsafe, and the council had better prepare its wallet. After all, what the fuck are taxes for, if not maintaing our infrastructure?!?

Sorry to hear your news Christo, I m hoping this is the third mishap and as things happen in threes your luck will improve.I bet it a round about with lots of lorries using it, the roundabouts on my way into the industrial estate where I work get coated with it.

Very greasy / slippery, terrible surface. Weird though, it looked clean. No mud on the road, or anything!

Exactly that. The roundabout is on the West side of Chatteris, joining the A141 to the A142. But today was the first time I'd ever found it slippery there.
Bad luck in threes? That was number 3 for TODAY! A shit end to a shit day. :\ [EDIT: Not drop number 3, thank foc. Just shit luck no3]
Unfazed - not a scratch - my gear isn't even scuffed!! Sadly, the bike is.

If its the 1st time youve found it slippery there, what are the council supposed to do???? If you travel the route and have never had a problem, they will throw that back in your face!

Don't think the Council (or Highways) would admit liability so it would be a waste of time. although I had a bad crash 7 years ago, a car pulled out of a side road I swerved into the hatching area which was in very bad condition, I put in my statment that if I had avoided the car (I didn't ouch) I might have come off anyway. I went back to take some photos a few weeks later to find the whole area had been resurfaced?

Well, I went out today and luckily had no issues. A few back roads had some mud on them from the tractors doing there thing (living in the West country, you get used to it) but thankfully the thou stayed perfectly glued to the tarmac. Had what felt like a slight wobble the other day, but it wasn't anything major and I think the tyres were still a little cold...
In any case, I'm riding a lot more conservatively this time of year regardless, although I do feel like a bit of a pansy on some of the corners. But I'd rather that than a spill ;)

Its that time of year where my local council up north grit which is fine for the cold mornings but it ends up as grease especially if the suns been out and has melted the ice before the grit has done its work.

Well, we've had 2 days (at least) without ice, and the route is frequented by lorries. I'm just really depressed at damaging this one so soon after my big smash up. :'(

Trouble with going down the 'not a chance' route is you'd probably be expected to notify insurance. Can you afford that. Are you prepared to ride a piagio 50 ?

Why would I have to notify my insurance? I'm TPF&T, and no one else was involved.
I refuse to ride a 50. That ain't riding.

I believe they ask regardless of policy if you've had accidents or claims with in x yrs and if the council were to consider your claim I imagi.e they would direct it thru insurance. Just a thought, I'm no expert :)

November temperatures, less than perfect tyres, road grit(nowadays mixed with urea which makes it more "sticky-supposedly to help rock salt stay on road surface longer-but disastrous for us motorcyclists as the slightest moisture in the air turns it greasy, poorly maintained surface, adverse camber, the possibilities are endless but motorcyclists are a minority & rate less attention than pedal cyclists in the pecking order :'( . Didn't notice/smell any spilt diesel by any chance?- poorly fitting lorry fuel caps coupled with fuel surge on roundabouts! :eek

Yesterday I was going to Nooj's in Newbury to get my bike cleaned and ACF 50 treated and, as it was nice weather, decided to go up some nice twisty roads to the A32, then take the A272 and B3046 before getting on to the A339.
Unfortunately it seems they'd been putting down the new "improved" style of grit which was slippery as foc at times and I decided to skip the B3046 section because it just did not feel at all safe, so I stuck to the main routes :(
By the time I got to Nooj's, the definitely needed a clean because of the amount of crap that had been thrown up from the roads.
