Hi Red,
Was thinking xt660 wheels( gold) poss early xjr pipes ( megaphones sounds like a plan), shouldn't be too hard to make a good looking café racer, exhausts may be the hardest (costly) part :rolleyes
Have a look for local auto jumbles coming up, I think Kempton park is on in the new year?
Mark :)

I didn't know these events even existed until mentioned earlier!
I am more familiar with losing money on horses worthy of a jumble sale though.  :rolleyes
Kempton's apparently only 17 miles away from me but i'm on call for work that weekend so can't really go, i'll try and catch one another time, maybe in warmer times as well.

thanks for the piccie FUZZY.....iam not the first then  :\ ......was thinking of a single seat and chopping the seat frame down to make it look shorter, looking at the picture,i dont think the tank looks right and would be a pain to swap for another, parhaps i could change the shape with the colour scheme ...

Post by: Fazerider on 20 November 2013, 02:55:21 pm

How about restoring it to original spec?
Cafe racers and streetfighters are all very well, but everyone who smashes their bike up a bit does it and ends up with something too personalised (and usually still looks like a bike that has been crashed) and so has little resale value. The FZS600 is an endangered species!

Post by: red98 on 20 November 2013, 03:03:06 pm
i know what you mean FAZERIDER...its been streetfightered already so iam using that as an excuse.+ the cost of a fairing and headlight is going to be expensive.....biggest pain will be the clocks, they look good when the fairings fitted but without its just not right, their fitted to the crossbar of the renthals at the moment  :eek ....like the idea of separate clocks but think thats going to be a pain, one for the speedo drive and two,for the fault code thingy  :\ .......need more thinking time  ;)

This is what I'd do and I don't think it'd cost much. Almost did it when I smashed a fairing a while back.

Keep oem clocks, spray the white back panel black. Get a high quality round single headlight, 7" min or a bit bigger looks good, lots of oem ones on ebay and mount it so it's quite low. Mount clocks in a similar position to standard -  could use the standard fairing/speedo bracket but remove/chop off the unneeded bits? Then get a nice looking screen, will cover up the back of the clocks and make it look a lot neater (guess you wouldn't need to spray the clocks if the screen is dark/opaque). Good quality & nice looking mirrors, again oem is usually the best, and the Fazer's lever clamps on the bars have mirrors holes already.

I think the key is to keep it fairly simple but make sure it looks clean and the parts are of good quality.

found this at the back of the garage and had a play....headligh wiring was a mess so striped out and started again.all working now with twin halogen bulbs.should be an improvement on standard.not sure on the style though......clocks were mounted on the cross bar on the renthals in front of the ignition .a bit in your face so made a cardboard pattern to mount on the back.to be made in sheet steel and mounted on the under side of top yoke.......

Bit more fiddling today, cut the base plate from 2mm to keep things rigid and the sides from 1.5 mm.hammered round an axle stand mounted in a vice with a rubber mallet...see if I can spot weld it together tomorrow  ;)

Bit more fazer fettling today, spot welded the clock cover, let it cool to prevent any distortion, offered back up to clocks to check fit and all is still good, went to seam weld the joins and ran out of gas... :o

Turned my attention to the top yoke, going to mount the clocks to the underside of the top yoke using the taped hole that holds the cable tidy , theres a blank in the yoke on the other side which I will bore and tap..

Title: Re: project fazer
Post by: red98 on 27 April 2014, 06:17:27 pm
cheers mark......once fully welded i will grind the bottom plate and welds flush with the sides and soften the edges, before spot welding i assembled leaving 1.5mm gap between the base and sides for this reason.....i think it might look a bit bulky but had to be this size to accomadate the wiring and plug for the speedo etc....need to make a couple of straps to mount it,25mm strip steel with two holes at one end to mount to cover and one at other end to bolt to yoke.

what better way to spend your lunch break than a bit of fazer fettling....bored and tapped the extra hole i need to mount the clocks.and gave the top yoke a polish and clean and refitted.

:o :o :o.....ah yes, an update..bought some gas sunday morning and seam welded the cover....in short bursts at each end in turn to avoid distortion...re fitted and fits well...started to grind down the welds but can only do a little at a time as dont want to upset the neighbours.....will take to work tomorrow and finish at lunchtime, will post piccie aswell......too much time spent with the lofo's this weekend, got to be out riding when the weathers good  :D

Bolted back on the bike.ned to re-route the wiring as plug dos'nt quite reach  :o....it will with a bit of re-routing   ;)......brackets will go on the inside of the cover I just need to make a clearence slot....not too sure if I like it or not, might try lifting the lights up a bit and change the angle of the clocks....looks right when sat on the bike ...

Title: Re: project fazer
Post by: mickvp on 11 May 2014, 09:18:26 pm
Sorry Paul, I don't like where they are positioned at the moment, as you say, they look ok from on the bike, off the bike the angle looks s bit too steep and there is too much gap between ignition and clocks. Bringing them closer in (and lowering them as much as you can with the space constraints) will make them look better. Once you do this you can decide whether or not the lamps need to move up a bit or not.

Sorry for not being positive, just being honest :o. Welding job looks really good though :D

hi mr willy....I bought this as a spares bike to sort out my stuttering 600...thats all sorted now so thought I would try to make something out of whats left.....no fairing so needed to do something with the clocks....not sure if this is the answer but its kept me out of trouble for a while........

hi matey.......thanks for your honesty, thats what I was after  :).....the reason I started with this position was to give plenty of room for the ignition switch.....working on my own holding the clocks and trying to see what they look like must have looked funny from a distance   :lol :lol.....its a starting point, will lower them and see what it looks like....cheers paul
Title: Re: project fazer
Post by: midden on 11 May 2014, 10:58:23 pm
Not to keen on the lights but they may look better actually mounted on the back of the clocks. Making them quite high but would allow the clocks to stay where they are and bring it all together

Could you even change the clock case you made to become a clock/ headlight case
Title: Re: project fazer
Post by: slimwilly on 12 May 2014, 06:18:11 am
Ok, so you had no fairing on clock mount to start,, yes the box came together well, tidy,

Naked bikes will always look like someone stuck lights, clocks as an after thought,,so you are always on a losing battle there.

Just do what you think you like,,its yours.
